Japan is having a ROUGH new year. I hope the friends and family of the coast guard members are doing ok, and i hope that nobody lost anything they can't replace in the fire. Hearing about a full runway collision is always rough, but it's amazing that most people survived.

Yeah, Japan had a rough start to 2024. Japan had a magnitude 7.5 quake at 07:10 UTC (Greenwich/universal time) on New Year's Day 2024, a reverse fault event, which caused some damage, tsunami and 80+ deaths. Then, on January 3rd was the airplane crash of JAL 516 with the coast guard plane. My prayers go out to the victims, victims' families and victims' friends of both disasters.
Let's liven the mood up, slightly. What is the anime from your avatar? My favorite anime is Hunter X Hunter, introduced to me by a friend in Nov 2021, was the first anime which was enjoyable to me and watched in full. One Piece, Studio Ghibli, Weathering with You, Cowboy Bebop and Azumanga Daioh are also great. Gonna try YuYu Hakusho this year, as My Hero Academia is getting old.

One thing this accident has taught me is that I would feel safest traveling with Japanese passengers and a Japanese crew. Grace under pressure personified.

RIP the 5 victims... Just a small correction, the collision was not halfway down the runway. C5, where the coast guard plane was lining up, is right in the landing zone, just past the 1500 mark

This so far looks like the LAX runway collision from 1991. Tho this sounds more like pilot error than ATC error

RIP to those who did die, but thank goodness everyone who was on the JAL plane survived! Hopefully, those who were injured are recovering well. This could have been so much worse.

Japanese people are compliant. They will follow instructions. Sadly, in the West, many Karens and Kens won't have followed instructions. Everything can be replaced except your life. Congratulations to the Crew of the JAL for an amazing job and to the passengers for following instructions to the letter and my condolences to the family of the crew of the Coastguard Dash-8.

I had exactly trhe same thought. Its like a free for all getting off after a normal landing

I didn't want to mention that too bluntly, but I too thought that particularly in the US you'd have libertarians screaming that no one was going to tell them how to exit a plane, and specifically that they can't order an Uber; or just general, tell entitled pricks and prickettes that they can't take selfies with the flames eating away at the hull.

I'm surprised that the dash 8 wasn't visible on the runway- surely it has trailing lights on it, possibly due to being lost in the myriad of airport lights.

A channel called blankolirio, run by a 777 pilot, explains really well how easy it is to loose visual of a plane on the runway at night, especially if it's lined up on the center line.
      Edit, it's blancolirio, with a c not a k.

@@thatguyalex2835 The channel name is Spanish actually, but the guy who runs it is American with everything in English. He's a 777 pilot for either Delta or American airlines, can't remember which. He's very insightful, breaking down incidents and accidents from a pilot's perspective focuses purely on the facts without bias.

@@KairiPrime I've watched a few videos there. I would assume that part of the problem is that you might not see what you don't expect to see--especially at night during a landing when the workload is high.

8 minutes! It seems it took the crew 8 minutes to initiate the evacuation after the plane stopped, already in fire. I think those people are incredibly lucky to have boarded an A350. It's a tribute to the plane more than to the crew.

I think this accident, in addition to showing the calmness and ability to function under extreme pressure of the Japanese, also highlights the excellent design of the Airbus 770. I would be pleased to find out that my flight involves one of these planes. After the two completely preventable Boeing Super Max crashes pre-COVID and the known obsession with share price of that company post-merger with McDonnell Douglas I am definitely in the Airbus camp.

Yes, I was wondering what would happen with a similar load of overweight entitled Americans. Chaos, luggage grabbing, pushing and shoving, videoing everything for Tik Tok, half the passengers already calling lawyers demanding to sue someone. (I am American)
