That still amazes me that they figured out a way to space the shots between the propeller like they did. That would be a bad day for a pilot if the timing mechanism malfunctioned while in mid air.
Yeah, along with shooting off propellers, there were stories from the advent of "gun turrets" shooting out their own tails, as well... The early days were pretty rough beginnings for "aerial combat"... LOTS of ways to have a really bad day. ;o)
What amazes me is that before the interruptor gear was invented, a french pilot called Roland Garros (the french open tennis court is named after him) he put steel plates on his aircrafts propellers allowing him to shoot straight through the propeller but any bullets hitting it would bounce off the steel plates. (of course with the chance of them coming back to him!!) Super brave or very stupid? ..a bit of both I think.
You deserve a lot more support for such excellent content. Thanks!
So in the end, the Red Baron broke one of his mentor's eight rules which led to his demise.
Most of Manfred's victories were in an Albatross not in the DR1 Tri plane and the pronunciation of Boelcke needs to have the last e pronounced as an "a". The Dicta Boelcke is a list of fundamental aerial manoeuvres of aerial combat formulated by First World War German flying ace Oswald Boelcke. Love your work, I only just discovered your channel.
Wasn't sure if I was going to watch this one. So glad I did! Outstanding info and video presentation 😎
Great video as always, I appreciate you man!
Excellent story telling! I really appreciate your effort.
This is a fantastic video. Very informative.
While watching this I could not stop playing the “Red Barron” by Sabaton in my head
It was Snoopy !
Nice video!
Also, what's the music in 2:31?
Not mentioned in the combat breakdown but a lot of the recon/bomber planes in WWI were not always one pilot planes, many had a pilot and a gunner/observer as well with a mounted machine gun in the back that could swivel and turn and lay down fire rom the back seat but not ire forwards, but that was covered by the forward firing machine gun, or guns however.
I think it was Snoopy...
What a goose-bumpy story!
.
And so well animated, narrated and storyline with facts and analysis!🤍👌🏽👍🏼💙
At 11:50 I recognize the photo as used on the cover of Led Zeppelin’s second album, albeit some faces altered.
How the heck were they throwing grenades from one aircraft to another? Did it have to perfectly land in the enemy aircraft's cockpit like a half court Steph curry 3 pointer? Lol
One thing leads to another... and you put a bit of a Maverick pilot in a situation to "think for himself" and he'll get creative every time. ;o)
I'm sorry but this is not totally correct, it's been proved now that an australian gunner called Cedric Popkin shot him and Manfred actually landed the aircraft it didn't crash into the ground. he landed and when the first guy got to the aircraft he uttered 'kaput' and died. (still a good video though!. I'd love to see you do one on the Buddy Holly crash when the young pilot wasn't IFR certified but flew in the snow at night and killed Buddy, Ritchie and Jp Richardson in a totally avoidable crash)
Is that your authentic accent?
