Sony A9III and it's Relationship with Flash Duration. A fast camera needs a fast strobe!
zhlédnutí 411Před 7 hodinami
A fast camera requires a fast strobe. the speed at which a strobe fires from start to finish is called it's "flash duration." Flash duration is something you don't hear about too often and those that have knowledge of it are either scientists, sports photographers, or high end beverage photographers that shoot "pour" images for the big bear and soda companies. But with the advent of the first g...

    I have the 16-25mm G and the 24-50mm G. Tamrons approach with 20-40mm is a much more useful focal length range…if Sony had done that with their better execution I would agree. But 24mm is not wide enough on the street or for video shooting. 20mm is the new 24mm.

    The touch screen on the westcott speedlight is sooo sensitive. I always end up accidentally changing my power or my beam spread and have to adjust while shooting. I also find it takes a long time to turn on, which is always a bit frustrating when I need to start capturing frames quickly

    imo: profoto a1, godox v1 pro or v860iii, followed by westcott. I think some people might prefer the westcott over the godox flashes, but I dunno, I prefer real buttons. For triggers I *really* like the new godox trigger with the touchscreen. Not because of the touchscreen, but because it's small and light. Very slick. Can't agree with you on pros not using on-camera flash. Speedlights are bread and butter for most events, or fill flash outdoors. OCF can be handled by smaller compact strobes e.g. ad300s, not speedlights.

    We just put this into practice in a big way at a horse show when we showed up and realized we had to light two arenas with the equipment we brought for one. I wound up running three strobes in a covered arena with massive amounts of daylight coming in from the sides and was able to get more than passable shots with the a9iii because I could run at speeds up to 1/2000 and still get enough power from my lights.

We can sure use fast flashes to freeze movement, but if using "normal shutters" they are only likes of 1/250s fast. And if we are not dimed enviroment we have to be on what, small apertures, to get these working to our benefit?

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV Před 2 dny

      Actually its very slow compared to the FJ400 and is $2400!!! Here is the spec that you missed on Flash Duration t.1: 1/6200 to 1/400 Sec t.5: 1/11,300 to 1/1200 Sec it might take 4-5 Sirios L units powered down to 1/4 power to get the same flash duration as a single Elinchrom EL500 unit (500 w/s 1/1700th duration). That would cost you a little over $13,000 not including sports reflectors and grip/pins... Everyone is quick to remember that Broncolor used to have really short duration strobes but what they forget is that they only produce those super short durations near minimum power instead of max power.

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV Před 2 dny

      as long as you turn it down to get the higher flash durations, it's fine but at full power, most of the Profoto gear is just too slow. If you are using it for portrait work, it's no problem but you will need to do some testing so you can "lag out" your shutter speeds with the flash power output of your lights. You should make notes on this and store them in your phone so when you are on location, you won't have to re-test every shoot.

  • @MikeAnthonyPhotography

    do you think now the sony a9iii has come out ....do you think westcott will make a fj400 sport ( work on the name of the new light ) but something that can use the full power of the a9iii for the future cuz the fj 400 was more made for high speed sync days and now that is kinda gone for most part for ppl who own the a9iii

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV Před 2 dny

      I doubt it. Of all the people shooting on FJ400's, only a fvraction are using the A9III. it wouldn't make sense. But... as other manufacturers catch up and eventually produce their own global shutter bodies, we might see someone make a light with shorter duration again... Old Elinchroms are still the easiest way to get power AND duration...

    Great Video PMR as always! Just my 2 cents.....since many high schools are now using the led lights I shoot 1000th second with a Sony 135mm 1.8 around 3200 ISO or lower and with a 50mm 1.2 at 800 ISO or lower. I punch in with my Sony A1 using these lens and cover the court easy. So I have a 50mm 1.2 to 200mm 1.8 and still have 21 megapixels. I have 1 A1 in my lap and one in my hand and works great. I also shoot video at 60 to 120 fps from a much lower shutter speed of 125th to 250th of a second which now allows me to shoot and very low ISO!

      it's a fair question. I would say yes, if you want the best looking images possible. LED's have increased the lighting in every arena they get installed in but you cannot compare available light images with those shot on strobes. The difference also is shooting at f/5.6 and 200 ISO vs. shooting at f/2.8 at 1600 ISO. That's a big difference.

    The A7iv/A7cii sensor ticks all the boxes but one : fast readout. With 1/15s, it is one of the slowest on the market (R6ii and Z6iii : 1/60, S5ii : 1/40). As a result you get rolling shutter for video and stills with electronic shutter and struggling AF for fast moving subjects.

Sony have made a system of small G glass with those 2 (for now, I fully expect an a7cs at some point... because, why not?) cameras a7cii and a7cr now make a VERY compelling ecosystem of "going small" without sacrificing any quality. @@PMRTV very tempting but it will have to wait. I watched one of your old videos and got a great deal on the Sigma 120-300mm Sports, updated the lens and MC-11 firmware, it's really decent with the A1

    So I have this lens now and my travel kit has in it both an A7CR and A7CII, with grips, in it. If I leave the 24-50/2.8 G on the C2 which lens do you think is best for the A7CR? I added the FE 70-200/4 MACRO G OSS II as well and I have many small, medium, and large size primes plus zooms. What lens would you choose to pair with the 24-50/2.8 and 70-200/4? Thank you for another video. Take care.

    • @bondgabebond4907

      A7CII - 33mp. A7CR - 61mp. A7CR about $700 or $800 more. The images from the A7CR will be more crisp, and just a little bit better looking. You might test both cameras if you can. You can see the difference if you do a little pixel peeping. The biggest benefit of these new cameras is the focusing, borrowed from the A7R5 and that is what makes them special. You can focus and track anything from a person to an insect. It's that if you like to do macro work on bugs, flowers, little things, the A7CR will benefit you more. I love macro photography and love the megapixels of the A7CR.

      The II is a bit faster and needs less card space. For people, street, reportage style always the II. That’s clearly the better choice. The R lets you crop in more. For wildlife and macro I would prefer the R.

      You'll be losing the mechanical shutter. Both cameras only have first curtain electronic shutter. This may impact the bokeh quality when using both large aperture and high shutter speed.

      A7III to A7CII is a huge upgrade because of the new sensor in the C body. you gain mp and low light capability too. if you think you really need 60mp+, then go for the R but 98% of shooters would be well served with A7CII. I've never regretted my choice for the A7CII.

    I also have the first two of the small Sony lenses and two additional small Sigma lenses (17mm.f.4 and 90mm.f.2.8), so I might have to sell some of them and buy the Sony 24-50mm.f instead .2.8 G and maybe also the Sony 16-25mm.f.2.8 G, or should I just be happy with what I already have?

    Thank you for explaining the lenses. I am also going to watch the new video. I wanted the 70-200 2.8 GM II for some time. For closer ups then the 200-600. Still not decided since for travels the 100-400 is lighter and compact, but then the 70-200 and converter would also cover same range on travels, while having a faster all around lens. Being an amateur shooter unfortunately the 400 and 600 prime end is probably not going to happen. Maybe rent it for a once in a lifetime polar trip. I am doing landscape, night, portraits, and since recently running competitions / marathons.

    Thanks again. Need to think of the glass as too full and not half empty. I have these four lenses like you and own both the A7CR and A7CII for my travel kit. The 40mm f2.5 is the small prime I use with the 24-50/2.8 G but it’s potentially loosing a place in my travel kit to my older Zeiss Batis 40mm f2 CF which is bigger but still very light. Above 50mm I try to use either the Sigma I-series 65/2 or 90/2.8 since Sony has left that space open. Also will often consider taking my Zeiss Batis 85/1.8. You also convinced me to take on the FE 70-200/4 MACRO G OSS II. So in my bag the 24-50/2.5 G and 70-200/4 GII are mounted on these bodies and the primes come along for the ride. By the way you should consider the Haoge LH-S245N Bayonet Square Metal Lens Hood for the small Sony G primes. I love mine. Also still own all my GM and GMII lenses but they are only getting use with my full size full frame bodies like the A1 and A7RV😢. Take care and I always enjoy your videos.

      Follow-up: I believe you are a Sony Artisan so it might not be a question you can answer outright but have you tried and compared the Sigma I-Series 24/2, 35/2, and 50/2? Of course there is also the 20/2 and 65/2 if you prefer those focal length not to mention the smaller four at 17/4, 24/3.5, 45/2.8, and 90/2.8. Would you consider using any of these between 17-90mm ? Take care.

      You are correct. I am an ambassador for Sony but... I love the Sigma glass but it's HEAVY and BULKY with much larger filter sizes than the Sony offerings. I truly stay with Sony glass partly because you cannot get 30 fps on the a1 with any aftermarket glass.

      @@PMRTV The three Sigma DG DN Contemporary lenses do weigh about twice as much as the set of three Sony small G primes. 1035 grams vs. 509 grams for Sony.

    I traded my 24-70 GMI for this new G24-50. I'm keeping my primes near the same length but the GM I was just too heavy for me to carry for my work. I have a neuro-muscular condition so I have to try sometimes to carry lighter gear (for work and pleasure) so the 24-50 works well because it's good for my news work (video and general daily assignments) because of the lighter weight. The 24-50 is just as sharp as the GM I, MUCH faster AF. Image quality is great, sharpness is great. I feel it's better in every way than the GM I. I've never used the GM II but I feel since is SOOO much smaller you're MORE likely to carry it around because of the size and weight. The GM I 24-70 didn't like to be zoomed as I was shooting. It would lose focus predictably all the time while I did that. This will hold AF-C well. Normally for my baseball work now (team photog for MLB Draft League team) I carry the 24-50, 70-200 GMII and 200-600... done! That has everything I need covered (sometimes I take my fisheye too if it's a nice sunset or i'm feeling like I need something odd to juice up my creativity that night). I agree there needs to be, and I'm SURE there will be more of these small G lenses. People didn't understand them at first but now you see not only your excellent videos on the topic but SOOOO many other videos now talking about the new a7cii/cR as "Leica Q killer" with the 40mm G talked about in those videos too as a "go to" lens. I like your videos on this topic, please continue to make more. -Dave K
