  • The new 300GM lens was worth waiting for and I got to thinking that of their big three lenses, none will be used with teleconverters more than the 300mm. I'd been looking for some kind of extension to the lens shade and then I saw a link for this shade. I bought one and received it after about 3 weeks and I wanted to do a short review of it for the many new owners of the Sony 300GM lens. If you use teleconverters a lot, this is well worth it to get extra protection from flare as well as rain and snow! Let me know what you think. Here is the link for their website: www.zemlinphoto.com

    Karl Zemlin makes the best replacement lens shade and lens caps for any long glass period

    The ring is actually incorrectly mounted. Please double check with the instructions that were sent with the hood. There's also a QR code on the instruction sheet that links to a short video demo of the ring install. The clamp screw should be at 3:00 or 9:00 position on the lens. When facing the objective I prefer the 9:00 position as the screw is facing up, so it's easier to access. The ring will be flush with the front of the lens and the internal features of the ring will engage the bayonet features on the lens locking it in position before you tighten the screw.
    Thanks!

    Great video! Purchased the hood and lens cap for my Sony 300 a few weeks ago, love them both! The lens cap brings peace of mind for me and fits perfectly. All his products when shipped come with the Allen key provided so might want to check the box! Thank you for posting this video

    If the 300 is mostly used with a teleconverter, Sony should be easily convinced to make a 400 f4...

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  Před 2 měsíci +1

      all in good time, I suspect. I hope they make a 200mm f/2 first though, and a 500mm f/4, and a 100-300mm f/4, etc...

    Cool product, but still not convinced it is needed. I've shot with and without the 1.4x tc and had zero flare issues.

      @kzemlin Před 2 měsíci +1

      Coatings on lenses these days are excellent, so I think the benefit of a long hood for IQ isn't what it used to be, but if you are shooting in rain, snow, or mist, a long hood can go a long way toward keeping the front element free of moisture. I also offer two-piece hoods so you can go short when you don't need the extra coverage, and add the second section when conditions are tougher.

  • @richodphoto
    @richodphoto Před 2 měsíci +2

    can you explain why the longer hood is advantages when using TC's? thanks!

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  Před 2 měsíci +3

      Sure, it's two fold. First, as you add the TC's the filed of view is more narrow. So if you choose the 2x, you are now at a field of view of 600mm though the optical characteristics stay the same. This means that you can use a longer shade when shooting in backlit situations. Second, if it's raining and especially if it's raining with wind, once your front element gets wet, you are pretty much done shooting. A longer shade will keep the front element protected. The 300GM will be the most often used with TC's vs. the 400GM and 600GM. At $6K, it's a killer price for a real fast tele... the TC's make up the rest!

    Hi, can it be mounted reversed for transport ?

  • @brandonmcmullen1553
    @brandonmcmullen1553 Před 2 měsíci +1

    I see your 300 is mounted to an a9iii. How are you finding that body working with your A1's out in the field? I shoot with an a9 (original - still a great body) and and a7rv. I'm used to having a high res body paired with a fast a9 for my sports event work. After updating my riii this last year, the next update is the fast body. In mid-2024 - go a1 or a9iii you think?

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  Před 2 měsíci +1

      probably go A1. It does more for sports shooting no matter what lenses you have. If you have 3/4/6 then a9III but if you use punch-in to get outfielders and shoot the other side of the field, A1 is still more useful IMO.

  • @kzemlin

    Also, you should have received a good quality 1.5mm wrench in the package. I drop one inside every hood when they are packed. Would be in a small ziplok bag.

    Hi there, great video. I have a question that could easily be a topic for a future video. What happens optically when you use a tele-converter ? Does your depth of field change ? Does your background bokeh change ? Subject compression ? Is it indeed, like a longer lens or are you just altering your field of view ? Thanks again for all your great videos !

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Great suggestion!

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  Před 2 měsíci +1

      As you add the TC's the filed of view is more narrow. So if you choose the 2x, you are now at a field of view of 600mm though the optical characteristics stay the same. Depth of field is not affected by teleconverters. This means that you can use a longer shade when shooting in backlit situations as it will block more flare vs. using the stock shade which blocks little flare. Second, if it's raining and especially if it's raining with wind, once your front element gets wet, you are pretty much done shooting. A longer shade will keep the front element protected. The 300GM will be the most often used with TC's vs. the 400GM and 600GM. At $6K, it's a killer price for a real fast tele... the TC's make up the rest! the shade I chose is 5.5" long or 140mm in length.

      @@PMRTV "Depth of field is not affected by teleconverters", wrong, when you add a teleconverter, the focal length get longer and the depth of field shallower. Maybe you mean that the close focus stay the same ! ?

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  Před 20 dny

      @@Anarki2U nope. Do this simple test and see for yourself. It is easy to do. The only way a TC can change DOF is if the distance changes to the subject when adding the TC. Otherwise, you are simply looking through the center of the optic--that's all. If you are just looking through the center of the optic, how would DOF be changed???? It doesn't, is the simple answer.
