As a pro of over 50 years in the business, I have used all iterations, all generations and all innovations in gear. I currently own A1, A9III, A7RV. I love them all for what they do better than the other. That being said , the A9III is a game-changer for a photojournalist, sports, action and wildlife shooter. The A1 remains a jack of all trades and still is relevant, BUT the A1 II needs to have pre-capture and some of the better frame rates of the A9III, its better ergonomics, its 4-way articulating screen. No one expects the A1 II to have a global shutter and that is fine. The A1 wins on a bit better dynamic range and more megapixels, but I find the A9III is more than good enough for most subjects. For landscapes, astrophotography, portraits, products, fashion, 8K video, my A1 and A7RV are king. For about everything else the A9IIi is super. I am keeping and will keep using my current A1. But likely will trade it in when the A1 II arrives, and will keep the A9III and A7RV. The A1 is approaching four years old now and still works great, but the newest tech advantages and the A9III are heralding a changing of the guard , with the upcoming A1 II ready to take the "flagship" title away Just my take on this. Thanks again Patrick Murphy-Racey. Cheers and best to you.

I shoot professionally and have for 35+ years. The evolution in camera tech from the 4x5 and 6x6 cameras I used to use for commercial work, to the advent of AUTOFOCUS...holy crap! to the Nikon D1, and now mirrorless...has simply been astonishing to watch. I still do commercial and documentary work (often as part of a film crew) but the work I love most now is nature and wildlife. I really love the insane speed and pre-capture of the A9III. But at 24mp, losing the ability to crop in post is a bridge too far for me. Even with a 600/f4 and the teleconverters cropping is simply a fact of life. The A1's 50mp is something I have come to rely on and can't live without. I seriously considered getting an A9III for the documentary work because the silent shutter and flash sync are huge assets. But the A1 (I have two) does silent shutter brilliantly, and I have yet to encounter the situation where 1/400th for flash sync (1/500th in APS-C) would not let me sufficiently control ambient light. For now I am traveling with a pair of A7C-II bodies (my tiny Leica replacements!) and an A1 for the commercial gigs, and a pair of A1's and an A7C-II mated to the 20-70G for the nature gigs. Its damn near perfect. When the A1-II or whatever it's called shows up, with all the cutting edge tech of the A9III AND a high res sensor, I will be acquiring 2 of them as fast as I can get my hands on them :)

I too use a7CII, A1, and A9III. I love the 20-70G on my A7CII and will be launching a video about the pair from a wedding shoot I did two weeks ago next Wed. June 25th. Great response!

I'm an agency bird photographer here in the UK. I have 2 Sony A1 cameras, an A9iii, an A7R5 and an A74. The A9iii is superb for my birds in flight work as long as you can get enough of the subject in the frame. The colours are the best I've noticed out of any Sony camera, so that was a nice surprise. The A9iii allows me to get images that only this camera can get in the current Sony range, like small insects in flight. I very much appreciate no rolling shutter for bees etc in flight as even my OM-1, Z8 & Z9 can exhibit rolling shutter on extremely fast moving subjects like wasps in flight. Having said all that, I simply adore my 2 Sony A1 cameras having changed from Nikon a few years back. It is still an amazing camera and one that can produce brilliant results in the right hands. I will upgrade when the A1 Mark 2 comes out and hope to see pre-capture, improved ergonomics, improved start-up time and more custom/improved autofocus options...happy with the resolution.

I am a wildlife and occasional sports photographer. I have two a1’s and one a9III. In my opinion if you are shooting action such as a bird flying, flying insects, erratic sports the a9III is king. For everything else I grab the a1 only for the resolution. I have these 3 bodies paired with the 600GM, 400GM, 100-400GM, 200-600GM, 70-200GMII, 16-35GMII, 90G, 50GMf1.2, 24GM, 14GM and both cameras work remarkably well on all the glass.

How do you find the autofocus acquisition speed on a9iii? I have an A1 and is really amazing at shooting BIF but sometimes I wish the focus acquisition speed is faster especially for birds that show up out of nowhere.

I carry the a9i and the a7Riv because they both serve distinct purposes in automotive and racing photography. I was just thinking today how I should just consolidate to an a1, but I also like having two bodies in case one were to fail.

Patrick, here's my 2 pennies...the a9-3 has the global shutter with the ability to go up to 120fps...great. Haven't looked back. Traded two of my 3 a1's for the two a9-3's. Has less megapixels than the a1, but the quality for me and my needs are just fine. I went with the a1's because of the 30fps and the 50 megapixels that the a1 offered. I was very happy with them. However, I needed to send them back to the factory to have mother boards replaced a couple of times. Basically a $1500 fix each time. That was unfortunate. As I said earlier, I still have one a1 and will use it as a spare or a primary depending on what my needs are. I'm blessed to have owned/own two of Sony's best, and am glad you're there to have helped guide not only me, but other photographers along the way.

I shoot weddings and events with a A1 and A9MKi mainly with the 35/85 combo (I also carry 3 GM zooms) the ability to shoot in apsc mode and still have 21MP is extremely valuable with my primes, which is why I went A1 and not A9iii. If I was only using zooms I may have got the A9III . When the A1MKii comes out I will get one if it's still 50MP. I am amazed just how few wedding photographs I have seen online from pros using A9MKiii and taking full of advantage of the extreme shutter speeds with flash. Either wedding photographers are not buying this camera or they are just not posting this type of image

Like you I have two a1s and one a9iii. I shoot mostly wildlife. I prefer the a9iii for birds in flight or when I anticipate action that will be sudden. I want pre capture in those instances. Also, I prefer it when I need 60-120 raw frames per second. Or if I want the flippy screen in odd situations. I want the a1 for everything else, especially if I need to crop. I don’t shoot much video, but I’d use the a1 for that too.

As someone still shooting studio portraits and sports with two A99ii's, the A1 is the only piece of hardware I see as an upgrade, major or minor, in every area. I find the focussing and virtually everything on the A99ii almost always good enough for me, so the leap to some things the A9iii does best wouldn't be worth the loss of dropping from 42mp to 24mp.

I’m now only a hobbyist so my need for a sport centric body ended with the A9II. I currently own two Alpha Ones, an A7RV, and two compact bodies. The A7CR and A7CII (and a A6700). I like the minimum resolution of at least 33 Mpixels so I’ve not jumped on the A9III. I do want an A1 mark II with all the body features updates of the A9III and A7RV. So let’s see if we can get a body with faster frame rates at 33 Mpixels than the A1 but I’m not pushing for A9III global shutter until its dynamic range improves. Love to see a 105 Mpixel MF product from Sony as well. Thank you and take care.

I also use 2 A1s and 1 A9iii for bird photography and as much as I prefer the A9iii's ergonomics, bird-eye AF, high frame rates, better stabilization, global shutter advantages, burst mode, and pre-capture, it has not replaced my use of the A1s for 80-90% of my shooting as the A9iii's 24MP simply is not adequate to make the significant crops I often need with birds. I had hoped that using the 1.4X TC with my 200-600 and A9iii would compensate but it is still not enough compared to the A1. I will use the A9iii for shooting at feeders and fixed perches where I can be relatively close to the birds and there are more pre-capture opportunities, but for the remainder of my bird shooting the A1 remains King of the Hill! If the A9iv comes with 33-45MP, perhaps that will end up dethroning the A1 - but probably before that we will see what the A1M2 has to offer which better be very compelling given the rumored $7500 US pricing.

I had a A7r4 , was planning to upgrade to A7r5, just for the AI Autofocus only, was using a 10O-400GM, am basically a wildlife hobbyist photography , But then I was confused as I wanted a Higher FPS, I planned on buying the A1, simply coz of the 50MP and 30 FPS, but then the price of A9iii was what made me move to it and the 120fos and the AUTOFOCUS , so I got a A9iii and a 70-200 GM 2, I used it on a trip of Tiger Safari and was blown away by the AF and the pre capture, I don't do BIF and Insects due to limitations of A7r4 FPS, but this A9iii just gave me some amazing pictures of BIF and insects which I never dreamt I could capture.....But the 100-400 was a bit of hindrance as I had to use high ISO to get the High Shutter Speed, 70-200 was too short for these, SO I bought a 300 GM f 2.8 and boy what a combo, even with the 2X TC its amazing, even at high SS I get ISO of 250 and around 640 with TC....I. ow use the 70-200GM with A7r4 when I need to crop ...61 MP cropping is game changing, also with 70-200 the noise has significantly come down, and with the Denoise SW I can clean it up in a breeze, Since am into big mammals and occasional BIF, this combo with a TC and without is mind-blowing, the 300 lens is a gem to handle, so light , so sharp and simply awesome.....A1 ii will be a game changer for Sure due to MP only , but if u want High SS and Pre capture which are game changers, A9iii is the way if Cropping is not much of matter to you.....

There are many great 24mp cameras, the Z6 III, a9 1, 2 and 3 and the Canon R3. The A1 is still on a league of it's own in my opinion, with the sensor performance and 30fps raw. The Z8 and Z9 do come close but only get 20fps in raw.

I own both cameras. I am a full-time professional photographer, but sports is not my main money maker since I got the A9III, the A1 sits at home a lot. I have owned the.A1 sense mid 2021 and it was absolutely my favorite camera for the last three years. But it started showing its age when the A7RV shipped at the end of 2022. I could see the future and that included things like the AI auto focusing chip, the extended presets, and the clever, four-way moving screen.
I have had the A9III for a couple of months, and I am so impressed with the global shutter, the unlimited flash sync that it allows. If I were shooting a sporting event, I would certainly use the A9III amd the A1. But if I’m shooting an event that is not a dedicated action or sporting event I would probably use the A9III and the A7RV as my second body.

I've got two A1s and two A9 IIs. When it comes to sports, still love my A9 IIs, and other than not having CF Express or the buffer of the A1, I feel they're still relevant 5+ years after their release. I've shot may awesome images with my modeling teams with them as well. As for the A1, I too have been through two of them due to wicked back focusing issues, but the file size, aforementioned buffer and ability to take CF express are killer. I cant see the need to upgrade at this time. Both of my current bodies do what I need them to do and I don't want to sacrifice low light or cropping capabilities.

I am a bird photographer and first and foremost. I need high megapixel camera like A1 and A1 has a great focusing system, though I expected some improvement with firmware 2.02. Sony A9iii though as superior and faster focusing system 24 megapixel just don’t cut it for photography. I don’t need global shutter and what I do. What I would love to see in firmware upgrade for A1 iare auto focus for eye auto video for wildlife and precapture raw. For A1 ii I would love to see A1 ii are even improved AI subject tracking and Better low light performance

i have the a9iii and love the speed and no roller shooting when trying to get clips of game action .....i will say the low light is not the best i cant really push past 6400 iso and feel great about the outcome ....but for anything day time this camera kills ....also having two 1tb cf cards helps alot with shooting 60 or 120 frames for photos ....i am still trying to see what focus works best and how hard i want it to stick or be able to jump from player to player .... i never had the A1 but i am sure the 50mgpix was nice but for me 25 is fine when i edit stuff

I have both the A1 and the A9III and have been very happy with both but seem to be picking up the A9III more often, maybe because it is newer. The precapture for wildlife and birds is a game changer for me. One area that has been a total surprise with the A9III is when using a flash. It has been amazing what you can do with the A9III and a flash and it has been so easy to use with the A9III. Along with the speed, and precapture of the camera the ease of use with a flash has to be considered as well. Can't wait to see what future cameras will be like.

For you guys over in the US, every new superduper camer a is a GEME CHANGER! You always use this hyped rethoric. WHY?
Some years ago i was whatching one of your videos and you said "well and with future firmware updates, who know what features will be possible ..blaa blaa blaa!" and i belived THAT... MAN, what a mistake!!!
I am a Sony guy and i can tell you that there was ONE (X1) Firmware update on my Sony A9II and there were NO new features added!!! NONE!!!
So that has to be said about firmware updates from Sony.
In retrospective it´s a BAD ideea to buy THE newest and "the best" because it is always money RIPOFF!
The beste camera for me, is the one i have on hand!
I don´t need no A1 nore a A9III and hardly anyone from the 99,99% of the people who watch this video!
