Is the Sony 2X Teleconverter Sharp? On the 300mm f/2.8GM, It Screams!

  • I've done a couple videos on the teleconverters that Sony makes for the FE lens system. They are great but the 2X was never used much by me in the past. That has changed overnight with the new FE300mm f/2.8GM lens. This new GM lens has faster AF than either of the other "big two." it is really quick! So I wanted to see how it did in a real world situation and I took it to a Rugby match to try it out. I shot the entire game with the 2X attached to the 300GM. This video will show you the results.

I have an affiliate deal with them that is similar to B&H's Payboo payment plan where you can get 5% off your sales tax (Bedfords still pays the tax). All you do is hit their website at bedfords.com, search for anything they sell, and pay. At checkout use the simple code, "PMR," and when they ship you the gear, they will credit your card back the 5% amount.
    Here is their link on the 2X teleconverter: www.bedfords.c...

    I played with both TC's on the 300 with my A7R5, and in my opinion the 1.4 is the sweet spot. The 2.0 does sacrifice sharpness, and with the speed loss as well, I found better results with cropping.

    I used the 1.4x on my 300gm and can also vouch for how it maintains its af speed/accuracy and sharpness. Incredible glass.

    Thanks PM-R. The 300mm f2.8 GM is next on my list. I already have both the 1.4X and 2X TCs and the A9III. Love Sirui monopods and tripods, I have a few. Cheers and best to you.

    The 2 x with the 70-200 mkii is ok at best at 5.6 but excellent if stopped down to f7.1 . If you think that game was brutal you should see a pro rugby match here in the uk. It's on another level

    I was pleased to hear you saying the autofocus is fast. My perception has been that the 300 focuses faster than the 400 or 600 even with teleconverters. I have also used with both 1.4x and 2x teleconverters and the images are so good I usually now take the 300 and teleconverters in preference to to the 400 or 600. An exception being if I need that extra stop of light gathering. I view the 300 GM as the perfect lens for sports and wildlife photographers with its light weight and flexibility.

    The 300 sounds like a no brainer! I still can’t shake the idea of waving my bokeh maximizing potential with the teleconverters unlike the other two big whites lol without the TCs.

    Would love to see a real test of the 300 with the 2x compared to the 600 prime with side by side photos on a high megapixel camera tripod mounted under ideal conditions. Obviously the 600 should be sharper but I do wonder how much. I've only tried my 1.4 on my 100-400 and found it wasn't good, I never use the TC now, I do wish it was usable on the 135GM which is probably my favorite lens. The 300 with TC's really does sound liked a great option provided it's really close to having the dedicated 400 or 600 primes.

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  Před 3 měsíci +4

      Sony not allowing the 135GM to accept the TC's was a mistake for sure :(. If thye make a new one that does, I'll not hesitate to buy one immediatley!

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  Před 3 měsíci

      if you did that instead, you'd only have a 21 mp file leftover because of the crop. Big difference in resolution between 50mp and 21mp!

    i have a question i cannot yet properly solve. greens and yellows in field sports seems to infect most of the photo even if i colour calibrate via xrite. its even more prevelent/muddy during overcast conditions. i like how yours have come out here good separation of players skin and outfits vs the greens and yellows in the grass

      @@PMRTV thanks mate. i did shoot jpg + raw last weekend and the jpg makes the greens be more green, especially especially foliage in the background and shadows to have less of that yellow tint. i think 1 of the issues is i am shooting local fields, surrounded by trees and turf that is uneven and can also reflect a lot more light in random directions than pro fields. Interestingly if i use these same Standard settings for jpg in video its even nicer and cleaner than the photos. pretty much dont have to do anything to the videos at all just cut and export

    • @DavidStella
      @DavidStella Před 3 měsíci +1

      I’m using high shutter speeds for fast action, but I’m not getting sharp results even at lower shutter speeds of maybe 1/800 and 1/1000 or above for more static subjects like animals at the zoo. I figured maybe my 2x teleconverter copy is the issue if others are getting sharp results.

  • @instamauimatt
    @instamauimatt Před 3 měsíci +1

    I’d say get the 300 and then a 1.4x. I think the 2x is just not as reliable. I’ve been shooting with the 300 for 2 months now and it’s a fantastic lens. If your that much in need of more reach, the 200-600mm is killer or just splurge on a 400 and then get the 1.4x.
