I used to literally run all these walking trails. Drop my boy at the YMCA and run through Indian trails into the manageable-sized mountains. The gorge has fresh water flowing (late spring) and wild blueberry bushes to rake with your hand. So great to run but potentially dangerous - you have to focus intensely (each footfall was at a different angle). Literally nobody in the entire park was running per se, but it was one of the great moments of my life to spend the whole summer of my 40th year, in 2003, on Mount Desert.

My 1997 custom high top 1500 Savana is one of a kind! I run 1” wheel spacers and all terrain tires all round. Also upgraded front and rear shocks. This van drives like a luxury SUV. It is not 4x4 and ground clearance is poor so being reasonable is my best off road feature.

I have explored the ADK for like 50 years. Have ridden on/off road motorcycles throughout, 4 Jeeps, been van camping for decades, own a cabin in a pine forest southern ADK. Been through Wells hundreds of times can’t believe I’ve missed this road. My experience is that many dirt roads in the ADK are private with gates, or State with no overnight camping. We stayed on the Sacandaga River at the state campgrounds near where you probably where…..real nice! NY/ADK is not very nomadic adventure welcome, but we have found free spots and not been shot at….yet. Nothing like the BLM free stuff out west, NY can be tough. That’s why we bought our own 7 acre campsite!!!

I just returned from a week's stay in Acadia and Gorge Path was my 3rd of 3 hikes last week. It was also the best. I came at it from the small parking lot along the Park Loop Road, hiked up through the gorge, up to the summit of Cadillac Mountain and returned the same way. I was most impressed with the 2014 reconstruction of the trail due to years of erosion. The granite stepping stones blended into the surroundings SO well that it looked natural rather than man-made. And to hear the brook as you walked along side or criss-crossed it made you forget it was a strenuous hike. Every hiker I met commented how beautiful a trail Gorge Path was to hike. Definitely a highlight and worth doing if you are in Acadia for several days. For those interested: The Falcon Guide "Hiking Acadia National Park" is a great reference, with very clear maps of and information about the individual hiking trails in and around Acadia. I picked up my copy of it at the Visitor Center gift shop. They also offer paper maps showing all the trails and how they are interlinked to one another that is worth the $5 investment. And it doesn't ever require recharging. 😊

There are MANY posted dirt roads with many times gates prohibiting access. From my experiences the ADK is not an easy to find free camping park…but it can be done. Be prepared to be asked to leave but if you are ok with conflicts…..go for it. As a life long NY and ADKer my opinion is that NY is not very open to nomadic lifestyles, Nothing like BLM out west…..nothing like.
