Trepassers !! Let me tell you my houston County tennessee story. I heard gunshots and knew it was on us. So being me I go there with my 4 lb dog in tow. I saw nothing but little dog did. Hiding in the brush was a deer hunter. He was told not so nicely to leave . He came back 2 more times. The last time I ran him off he actually called police on me saying I threaten to kill him. I was arrested. I didn't have a gun but he did. Yes my land is posted every 10 ft.

You may already know this but in the archeology field trash pits are called "middens." Almost any place with humans living n a spot for a length of time had a area where trash, debris was tossed. My Dad called them treasure pits. He and friends seldom found any real treasure; an occasional coin, bullets, parts of weapons, buttons, knives and more. They had decades of fun though.

Jeff, those Williams cleaner bullets were almost universally hated by the troops due to a lack of accuracy when compared with the Menie bullet. They were packed with from one to three per packet of ten standard bullets and since the paper cartridge was colored differently, often times they were be thrown away instead of fired. As time went on, even the War dept grew to hate them due to more complex manufacturing required coupled with very minimal cleaning results.

Good video Jeff. On the stirrup, please keep in mind that especially early in the war, cavalry soldiers in particular, came straight from home and they brought and used their tack, weapons, supplies, etc. that were used in their civilian life. This stirrup is a classic civilian style from the mid and later 1800's. I did CW cavalry reenacting for nearly 30 years and have quite a collection of saddles and other items used and a great percentage is civilian in nature. Definitely NOT like we see in the movies where everything is stamped with a big CSA and all the uniforms are alike, ha. I might suggest that you google books written by Mr. Ken R. Knopp, out of Mississippi. He is widely recognized as one of the true experts of CS saddlery and tack. He has written a few books and actually is a close friend of mine. I think his books would help you with identification of some of your dug pieces. take care.
