The European mind can’t comprehend having engines so large and then not immediately rearranging the tracks it goes over
I actually have a possible date because my grandma used to ride on the Pennsy, it was ether 1948, or 1947 when my grandma was young
RIP PRR. BTW nice footage
Thanks, The DVD has much, much more footage.
At least it is pure luck that we still have one T1 still running
Rip B&O em-1 7600 and 7609
It’s a pity that most steam locomotives in the video are scrapped
Wow I've never seen so much footage of running NYC locomotives.
These are a small number of what you'll see on the DVD.
Cool seeing the servicing going on without the first safety vest or hardhat. 👍

My grandfather, Art White from San Jose, was an engineer on the Southern Pacific. Greetings from New Hampshire!!
Hello from Kansas 🇺🇲
I thank God almighty for the Union Pacific and their steam heritage program. Because of them we got to see a couple of these big articulated beasts like the Challenger and now Big Boy 4014 in action in modern times and the present.
Fantastic video! It was my delight to take two trips on the Queen (and to play the calliope once). I’ve lost touch with her status over the years and need to find out what’s going on. Until then, watching this vid made me happy!
Glad you enjoyed it!
That time was the beginning of the end of the steam locomotives. From there, they still continued producing steam locomotives up until either the 1940s/early 1950s, & it wasn't until the 1960s when nearly all steam locomotives phased out & replaced by more diesel ones.
The live sound recordings and scenes are precious and I would recommend this DVD to anyone who loves SP steam. Only thing I can say about it in a negative way are how drawn out some of the chase scenes can feel. If you're into that though, this is for you.
The film is what it is. Most viewers like chase scenes and they are longer in the DVD. Most of the sound was recorded by the camera man and are original to the film. This preview is only a fraction of what you get on the DVD.
I came here for the AC-9
You'll find more AC9 footage on the DVD.
the world's biggest steam locomotive is the Pennsylvania Railroad S1 not the Big Boy
In overall length, yes the S-1 was bigger. The tender was about 10 ft longer which made the overall length about 8 ft longer. In terms of just the locomotive, the big boy was bigger; it was wider, longer, and taller.
0:08 That definitely isn't authentic audio
Wrong. It was recorded by the cameraman John M Prophet III when he shot the film. We matched up the film with his recordings. For more info on Mr. Prophet do a search. When you hear a Hudson or a Niagara, you are hearing actual locomotives.
Very impressive and enjoyable classic footage of the Reading rr operations during the transition era period, these were the final years of steam operations and it's great to see that these moments were recorded on film. The Reading rr t1 class 4-8-4 Northerns and the G class Pacifics were impressive examples of steam power to view in service as shown in these film recordings.
Rode behind many of these on CN passenger trains. Nice scenery. Too bad the horn doesn’t sound as good as what I recall on those CN trains.
The horn is what they had in 1997. I think it has since been replaced..
Those Were Locamotives ❤ It 😊
It’s crazy to think that it’s been almost 30 years since this happened and that of all the equipment shown here only the then Newly acquired 1835 the 12070 the. Used as the ticket caboose in the siding in this video and the N&W caboose on the rear of the train are still i service the rest of the cars were either sold off or retired and stored in the dead line in Willow
Grayson, did you knee that I bought and donated Mopac caboose 12070 to the museum? It was the first car they owned. I also got the two RS3's traded by Amtrak and I secured the donation of the Army GP7's. -JH
@@herronrailvideo1169 yes I did. actually you and woody were a big part of that museums success Paul Chapman in many ways too. I used to know everyone else ( the founding 7 members names) off the top of my head that broke off of the Tampa NRHS to from the FGCR&Museum You and I actually go pretty far back even though we only got to see each other briefly the last time you came down to see the place before I left to work for Charlie Poling. I have a deep rooted soft spot for FRRM but after 20 years and being pushed out by the new management without so much as a recognition or appreciation of service was hard. I miss the old days when you and Ken Clark and McQuiggs were more involved. It’s changed a lot in someways for the better in some ways it’s lost a lot of it’s potential to do things such as this not having the full line and not caring that they don’t have it is a problem in my opinion. One that will be a permanent problem for them In the future. If they don’t act soon. I hope your doing well Mr. Herron
Thanks Grayson. I rarely go down there any more.
Love those 5700s
As much as these diesels are very fascinating, I wish there was more steam action in Florida.
Florida railroads (ACL, SAL, Southern FEC) all dieselized pretty early so movies of regular service steam in Florida are scarce. We may do something with excursion steam in the future. -Herron Rail Video
I get a big laugh out of the way these guys think hard-bitten railroaders would have been concerned about a proper Belgian pronunciation of "mallet." 😆 Even then, they don't. 🤣
What whistle is that 2:59
It is an Illinois Central 3 chime, standard whistle for ICRR road locomotives. Those whistles were made at Paducah Shops and are similar to Hancock 3 chime whistles.
@@herronrailvideo1169They sound very similar to the southern railway PS4 three chimes for some reason
Nice video
Thanks

@@herronrailvideo1169 Got it, but why is that so strictly copyright protected? (Cuz I don't run into these cases very often.)
Something needs some extra lube!
I really like the B&O wagontop caboose!
Regrettably, the B&O caboose is no longer in service but it does exist at the museum's shop area at Willow, FL.
Wagon too is no longer at the museum was sold 4 years ago to a private owner by them
Danny Harmon...out! I am from Louisville. Saw the General in Strawberry Yard in the mid 60's. My elementary school went to the L&N station for a field trip. We used to go to the museum when it was down by the river. Good times!
Awesome to see how the territory I run over looked back in the day. Especially that 765, got to pilot it from Bellevue to Cleveland a few years back, many dreams fulfilled that day to say the least.
Very cool!
I wish there was more footage of the pennsy 6-8-6 and 6-4-4-6 duplex
Only one shot of the 6-8-6 turbine in Classic Pennsy Widescreen. I think the 6-4-4-6 appears in Pennsylvania Glory Volume 3 while at the New York World's Fair.
Thank you for uploading this, I videoed her in 2000 and 2001 in Mount Dora but never saw her in Parrish.
is that danny healthman ?
If you're asking about the narrator, its Danny Harmon.
It's worth noting that #4 is owned by the Reader Railroad, not the D&R. The Reader Railroad leased #4 to the D&R the year before for an excursion, hence the D&R lettering.
That's true. The D&R sub-leased no. 4 to the Fla RR Museum for the runs there.
Cool 😎
