      The S-2 was the only 6-8-6 ever produced. She was intended to be a 4-8-4, but, wartime restrictions prevented the Pennsy from getting her as they wanted. Had she been built as intended, she would have been a class R-2 as class R-1 belonged to the only 4-8-4 electric motor.

    I remember George showing his films when I was a kid in the 80's and him telling the stories about the film's during the show. That was neat. Especially him talking about those pacing scenes and how crazy fast he had to drive to keep up and how dangerous it was. Those cars nor the roads at that time were meant for that as he would say. It was scary alot of times! He sure got some great footage!

  • @steamgent4592

    Excellent footage from George's collection of films. I was lucky enough to have seen George's stuff at public viewings he did in the area back in the 1980's. I do know the E6s pacing shots along Rte 724 was longer (you even saw inside his car for a second) and some other missing shots. However it's still good stuff don't miss out! Waiting now for a DVD of just George's PRR stuff he had a lot of films.

    PRR is one very interesting railroad. They had many different steam locomotives and always experimented with unusual designs such as the duplexes, always going with a rigid frame while many others went with articulateds.
    Such a shame that a railroad like that has merged with their biggest rival, the NYC, and the newly formed Penn Central went bankrupt in a short time.

    The E-6 alantics I saw in the preview were NOT the famous 460.

    It's amazing we maintained so many steam locomotive in operation at one time. Now it's an enormous task to operate just one. How did we let it all slip away?

    • @ralgith
      @ralgith Před 6 lety +6

      We didn't. The cost of labor nearly doubled post-WWII, and thus these labor intensive monsters gave way to the diesels that needed much less in the way of maintenance and operation personnel. It's a simple sad truth of economics. The amount of labor to do a steam locomotive now only seems like more; it's an illusion caused by the often volunteer nature of the work and having to source parts that are no longer readily available.

      @kevin Simala problem with the steam turbine locomotives is that the steam turbine locos break down more often and the turbines were fragile and broke often. Diesels seemed to be better. Steam is just harder to maintain. But then again, steam locos are somewhat good at hauling cars

    • @Greatdome99
      @Greatdome99 Před 3 lety

      Pennsy's steam turbines had reciprocating side rods which pounded the track despite the wheel counterweights. As for turbines, they're only efficient at full speed, and RR locos operate at a variety of speeds.
