Thank you for helping with the production of this time capusle. I'd love to make an updated version of this video in years time as so much has changed since this was filmed like how RBMN is now a Class II regional now instead of a shortline, the new players namely Colebrookdale in Boyertown, and how places like New Hope have changed so drastically since this video. Gettysburg though... yeah they uh don't exist anymore.

OMG I remember I had this video as a boy. I was lucky enough to have been born in 84, so I grew up behind 425 and Reading 2102. I have not smiled so big or for so long as when I was hoisted into the cab of 2102 and I got the blow that whistle.
I was a railfan for life, starting that day.

Gettysburg Railroad doesn't do passenger rides anymore. Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad is now called the reading and northern and still do passenger trains but idk if they still do it between temple and hamburg. last time i check their passenger trains run from reading proper, port Clinton, pottsville, and jim thorpe. East Broad Top Railroad is in limbo last time i checked but not officially dead yet (hopefully things turn around for them soon tho).

The good news is now there's a new player. The Colebrookdale railroad (aka the Secret Valley Line) running from Boyertown to Pottstown on an old Reading Branch line (Abandoned by SEPTA in 1981) that eventually connects with the Norfolk Southern Harrisburg line. What's even more nice is one day my 1st ride on the train took us to meet Amtrak's Autumn express in 2014. They only have a GP10 and a GP38-2 high hood but they do have a steam locomotive being restored. As for the other railroads, New Hope 40 (taken out of service in this video) is still in service today and is now the lone steam locomotive of New Hope and boy she was the engine I grew up around. East Broad Top will make a comeback soon. Strasburg hasn't changed as much but PRR 7002 and 1223 no longer run due to FRA ultrasound tests deeming their firebox walls too thin and the RRMOPA didn't want to modify them with thicker firebox walls, the GE 44 tonner got sold but they do have an SW9 and SW8 that still assist in freight duties, 31 is still out of service because of a 1472 day inspection last I heard but I haven't heard anything else. Also New Hope has been expanding their horizons in excursions hosting excursions for Lansdale Founders day in August usually running from Lansdale to Souderton and once Lansdale to West Pointe on the CSX Stony creek branch (They do plan to try and get 40 to run from Lansdale this year so long as the China virus ceases to exist) that's without mentioning New Hope 40 taking part in the North Wales 150 excursion back in May last year. Yes some lines are gone (Gettysburg though had numerous faults in lack of maintenance of their fleet and poor training which was especially apparent after 1278's firebox explosion there from low water levels so it's kinda good they stopped tourist railroading) but some still run, one is coming back, and one new recruit has joined the tourist railroad club.

I wonder how many of those people looking at the Big Boy 4012 in frame 9:12 would have ever imagined, or believed it's sister, 4014 would be restored, and running under it's own steam in the year 2019. It's so awesome to see a big class 1 railroad like the Union Pacific have such a love, and passion for it's history, and heritage to cough up the funds, and allow the time to bring the mighty Big Boy back to life for all of us to witness, and have fond memories of.
I got to see it in person twice. First time was at Colton, before it made it's trip to Cheyanne to be restored, and the second time again at Colton, when it made it's return trip to California. Seeing a Big Boy running under it's own power in person is an incredible, and unforgettable experience. I loved it so much, I just purchased an N scale model of the 4014.
