You have arrived at the channel for Dirtwalker Outdoors. Welcome. We hope to show you a great many outdoor activities here that you can enjoy along with us. We hike every trail we can find and often go on backcountry backpacking trips to the most beautiful places available to us. Is that all? No, we are paddlers, in both kayak and canoe, mountain bikers, bike packers, and overland campers. In 2023, we are overlanding in a 2007 Hummer H3 adventure and showing you Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park, Ouachita National Forest, Padre Island National Seashore, and the backcountry of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Colorado.

Beach Camping Tip using Kelty Sandbags, At Padre Island National Seashore
I have seen many tents destroyed while camping at Padre Island National Seashore on the beach and this tip of using these Kelty sandbags does the trick to securing tents in high winds. I have also used sandbags from Home Depot with a drawstring closure, but I prefer these reusable sandbags from Kelty for their zipper closure and ease of use. I have used these sandbags while beach camping many times, and this technique, and it works far better than even screw in tent stakes. Padre Island National Seashore can have very abrupt and consistent high winds in excess of 40 miles per hour without warning. Use this tip to make your beach camping trip more safe and enjoyable.

There are a few big climbs and lots of small boulders and jagged rocks in the creek bed. It’s great fun, but pretty tough.

Great video, and you give a lot of great information and recommendations. I was just there about a month before you on many of the same trails. Best advice I found before going was to bring two spare tires.
Thanks! I think the best plan is to be able to air the tires down so they don’t get punctured. It’s definitely one of my favorite trail tricks.
It seems like with sharp rocks, your tires would be more easily punctured if you aired down.
It is actually the opposite. The tire is able to flex around the rock rather than be punctured.

Great informative video. Question for you, how rough is the unmaintained road between Rancherias and Madrid Falls road? I’ll be traveling that route from Guale 2 to Chorro Vista. I’ve been to Guale 2 before. I’m in a JT with a 2” lift and 35’s. Any recommendations on recovery equipment? Thanks
There are a couple of hills that get a little gnarly, especially near Mexicano Campground. Madrid Falls Road itself isn’t too bad. Lots of sharp rocks though. Air down, slow down. You’ll be fine on 35’s. I carry some recovery straps, a tree protector, winch extension, soft/hard shackles, and an 11,000 lb rated hand winch along with the 9,500 lb winch. But I like to be prepared. Lol

Do you still have it. I have 2008. I got it brand new in 2007 I still have it. I love it so much. Just use for regular driving and a little fun in the snow. I have a playlist of it. Yep at the bank window not good. Also it gets a lot of dirt inside the back door panels. I’m glad you like it. Great video 👍
