  • In this episode of whatever show this is, I am camping and fly fishing at South Llano River State Park followed by camping, fly fishing, and hiking at Garner State Park in Texas. Did I catch anything fishing? No, I did not. Does that matter to me? No, it does not. I had a great time at both parks. I set up camp in the dark at the walk in sites at South Llano River State Park and tested the waters for signs of the infamous guadalupe bass, which did not wish to meet with me in person. I waded in the river on the upstream end of the park in my Frogg Toggs waders and Simms wading boots. I have been very happy with that combination. If you will keep watching, you will see me in the fabulous, clear Frio River at Garner State Park. There, I saw lots of trout, but they weren't ready for anything I offered them. Turning to hiking, I put foot to trail and picked a rough loop, hiking the Bridges Trail to the Foshee Trail, ascending Old Baldy and descending the Old Baldy Trail to the steep White Rock Cave and Bird Trails, hiking out on the Crystal Caves Trail. If you want a tough route with lots of elevation gain and rough terrain, that was it. I highly recommend both of these parks, South Llano River State Park and Garner State Park, and both the South llano River and Frio River. I am still learning techniques when it comes to fly fishing as well as what combinations work for me. At the time of this upload, I have just returned from a coastal trip to Padre Island National Seashore, where I tried saltwater fly fishing with the Penn Battle fly fishing combo that will now be my favorite.

This is interesting country and it seems February is a good time to visit there.

It is interesting. It’s a separate part of the hill country I’ve not seen, and the rivers are wonderful.
