Sony a7s III SLOG-3 in 4K! Memorial Park in Jacksonville, FL

In my videography career I haven't had the chance to use 10-bit footage, ever! Since my other Sony cameras were 8-bit I never touched SLOG-3 so I was a bit nervous to try it out. I'm so pleased with what the Sony a7s III can do! Color grading this was much easier than I anticipated, be sure to not go under the base ISO of 640. I also over exposed each shot be at least 1.5 stops as per advice fr...

I wish I had shot more footage, this trip I was focusing more on us relaxing than making sure I got a lot of shots...

Sony shooters: Upgrade your audio with the K3M!

As working professionals we should find the best equipment that makes our lives easier during and after production. Many people focus too much on the camera and not enough on audio. The Sony K3M is a 2-channel XLR digital audio recorder that works on most Sony alpha cameras, but uses the new hot shoe pins on the a7r IV and a9 II giving you clean and crisp digital audio baked right into your vid...

Useful, thank you - Colin
I am looking to buy either a used 120d or 120ii for self tapes, is there one you prefer over the other for flattering, soft lighting?
Flattering soft lighting will come from your modifier, not the light itself. Go for a large soft box.
Has a bit of focus breathing. Something not good for video people
It’s been perfectly fine
3 years later, do you still do this, or have you gone to strobes?
Strobes. This set up was just too much to put together and also the output is not enough. If you get a Westcott flex kit it has enough output as a constant light set up. This set up was just far too cumbersome to use whenever I don’t have my own studio.
Not sure if you will see this comment, but it happen to not see any wave from the podmic in garage band, is it because I don't have a cloud filter or another type of problem ?
Probably! Watch the video and that might explain it.
how is this when using in an event? So i don't need to patch my h6 zoom separately with a mixer. Have subscribed , btw. Thank you for the video!
I wouldn’t use for an event. The spot you’d set up tripod by is rarely close enough to sound board.
does the podmic work with the dynamite preamp
Has anyone used this with the zoom podtrak p4? I feel that I have a lot of sound feedback. I have the gain up to 6. Is that too high?
Will mark 2 of Sony 12-24mm F4 release soon? If I want to pair an ultrawide lens with expectation of a bit of crop to use as everyday lens to the A7RV 723g with Tamron 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 1155g, should I get Loawa 10-18mm F4.5-5.6 manual lens 496g, Sony 12-24mm F4 565g or Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 795g?
What about cpl?
Why do I feel like I know this guy? Lol
Enjoyed this video, your knowledge is amazing.
Do you think this is better than the new Fifine k688?
I don’t really keep up on the newest stuff anymore man. Sorry
Hey nice review. I realize this was posted a while ago but any second thoughts after living with this lens? Have you checked out the Sigma 16 to 28 2.8 Contemporary for comparison?
I still love it!
you need to combain audio with cloud and without for comparison.
I have one of these and when does it sell. The audio just keeps cutting out. Has anyone found a solution to the wind problem with this microphone?
Sir I am full beginner. I want to record my written poetry professionally. Suggest me audio interface and dynamic mic. Which gives me professional level quality. Because my room is not sound proof. My total budget is 300 dollars. Tell me such a setup that I will not regret buying.
I wish I could help but I'm not your guy. I would point you to look up DIY sound dampening (bed comforters for example. A Zoom H5 or similar with a dynamic mic would work.
Great video with real world experience which is great. Your background audio is too loud overall and interferes with your main audio in the mix. Good info and advice overall. I am debating the K2M (older analog) vs the K3M (digital) and this helps to understand why K3M is better overall 24bit :)
I just got this mic!!!!! now i need to get the xlr cable, audio interface and a mic stand 😆
Hey Tracy great video what software are you using to record and edit your videos ?
Hey! I use Final Cut Pro
Thanks help me understand why I am getting similar noise using another rode mic!
Great review--some of it went over my head since I'm new to audio. I've been looking for a better mic for YT vids and voiceovers in Premiere Pro for my videos, would this be a good option? Currently using a Samson meteor USB mic that plugs directly into my computer and recording directly in Premiere or with audacity, do I need garage band? And what interface do you recommend I get for a beginner to get the mic up and running so I can use it with my computer?
I'd keep it simple and get a USB mic. Shure has a new one.
thank you
Hey Tracy, sorry to bug you again, but I have a follow-up question. For a 24.4.2 (two of them linked as you do with your two mixers), will ONE mac mini be able to run both of these mixers via the firewire 400 and will the one IPAD be able to control both of the mixers? This seems to be the hesitation.
Honestly man I'm not sure, it's been a decade since I was using this set up.
@@TracyDavis904 I appreciate your patience as I probe your memory from that far back. Lol. But just seeing if you can assist a little in initial attempts to set this up. Bu chance do you remember if you have to pull up the app on the computer twice? This seems to be the limitation that is hanging up the audio guy. We use the tablet to control the mixer so we need to make sure the computer is seeing all 48 channels. It seems that they heard with FireWire (400) that it can’t do all 400. This just seems like presonus would have worked this out before release of the mixer. Thanks again for all input you can give.
So I ordered my mic but also the Go XLR so I should be fine without a lifter right?
Yep
@@TracyDavis904 thank you
Hi Thanks for this! If I record two channels with the K3m, they end up being two mono's baked into one audio channel in Premiere Pro. How do I make each one stereo and also seperate from each other?
I don't use Premiere but in Final Cut I make the audio channel for the clip 'dual mono.' I can see track one and track two and I select between them as needed.
I realized this video is more than 10 years old, but I have a friend who still uses a presonus mixer from back in that version but his is the 24 channel. He's wanting to do what you did, but his question is, "do you need TWO computers" or did you just need ONE mac Mini to make this work (with two display monitors).
Lol yea this video is super old! We used one Mac and one iPad.
@@TracyDavis904 Thank you so much. I know a church that already has one Presonus and has bought a second one (cheap due to the age), and they are wanting to link them exactly like you did, but they thought they would need a second mac mini. They will be super excited to hear that's not the case. thank you for the quick response.
Dude! if you switch the back mic to off I'm assuming you would get left and right channel combined through the front mic. and vice versa if you switch the front Mic to off. The only time you would have separate left and right channel is when you have both Mics activated Or when you have a mic plugged into the external Jack?
What camera did you used for this video? You were more out of focus than in focus? just wondering . Thanks.
I was in focus the entire video except when I was testing the lens or showing the lens. It was the a7iii back at this time.
@@TracyDavis904 Maybe you should check again you're entire video. You were quite a few times out of focus and got me worried.
Hello, ik this is an old video, but i would like to know what i need for recording audio clearly with streamlabs OBS if possible. I have the rode podmic, boom arm, and a pop filter, and a usb XLR cable. I have the XLR cable from the Rode podmic box, do i need to get the cloudfilter AND the Presonus audiobox? I hope you can get to me😁
I’d call a guitar center or sweetwater and ask them.
It’s very easy to cut split and put all the audio into dual mono in final cut. I’m kinda shocked that no one stoped to think how is it going to record what is essentially 2 mics on one Audi track.
There are better mic activator like the Dm1 or fethead
Just stumbled by…I, too, am experimenting with constant lights, focusing on the GVM 300w (2) in lantern soft boxes, with a curved reflector, somewhat ala Peter Hurley, on a budget…lol…
nice review.. i just order the 14-24 because of your review.. thanks
Your existence is a good reason to keep abortion legal.
Cool content man, any updates since you made this?
Lots lol. Moving soon, I’ll do an office tour or something.
Get rid of the music I passed over this because of the distraction.
Am I supposed to care?
@@TracyDavis904 You should because it would improve audience response
This was so great to watch, thank you. It reminded me of when I proposed to my wife back in 2007. Maybe I'll make a video of that someday. Love all the way from Norway.
This mic is picking up something weird in the background? What is that sound? Sounds like.... Sounds like... It's Curtis Judd shaking in his boots.
Lol no where close
Thank you
Bro which software did you use in this video?
GarageBand
Another very good option is a Triton FETHEAD its alot cheaper and gives more then enough gain I don't even have it plugged into my mic but into my interface without extra noise.
Good comments about a great microphone. Yes, some form of an inline preamp is required and a Cloudlifter is good for that. Many CZcamsrs don't talk about the preamp requirement and they miss explaining it. Good job and thank you.
Hi, Tracy, thanks for the interesting video. When I try to connect the 3.5 mm output of my Zoom H6 recorder directly to the 3.5mm mic input of my Sony Alpha7iii, I get a high interference level (no idea why, perhaps because I'm using a 10 m long 3.5mm cable??). So I'm considering to buy the K3M for directly recording in my video files the sound recorded with the Zoom H6 (mainly interviews and classical music). Do you recommend it? In such a case, what would be in your view the best interface/setting, knowing that I generally need to keep around 10m distance (sometimes more) between the subject that I record (usually my wife while she sings classical on a stage) and the place where I have the Sony Alpha 7iii recording? Thank you! Roger.
Hmm I’m not exactly sure, sorry. I know you can record directly into your a7iii using the line out port on the H6. Have you tried that?
