There aren't many wide angle options for Sony full frame mirrorless cameras. I had a tough time deciding between the new Tamron 17-28 2.8 or the Sigma 14-24 2.8. I went with the Sigma and I'm VERY glad I did. This lens has been redesigned for mirrorless cameras and I believe is the first zoom lens from Sigma for Sony e mount.
In this video I go over my initial impressions of the lens as well as auto-focus and barrel distortion testing. I hear ZERO focus motor movement as well.

I recently got the tamron 17-28 and absolutely love it - having had the tamron 28-75 since it’s release I was so impressed I instantly pre ordered the tamron when it was available. Had that not been the case I would have been very interested in this lens - it’s great to see companies offering more affordable f2.8 glass for Sony that works so well with the autofocus! Sony’s G-master range is just far too expensive for me to justify!

I send back Tamron 17-28mm as soon as I got the sigma 14-24mm, way sharper and better color and contrast. Love the lens, I even sold my Sony 12-24mm f4 haha. Nice video, you won't be disappointed, I use it for real estate, weddings photo video and even on a gimbal.

yes it is available for the l-mount, which spans Leica, sigma, and Panasonic, the feedback is extremely useful for someone looking at switching from A Nikon DSLR to mirrorless. Though I am still considering my options (Nikon, Sony or Panasonic) the value proposition Sigma presents has me leaving Nikon for either Sony or Panasonic because Sigma has told me that both of the lenses I already own (85mm, 135mm both ART series) can be converted from f mount to either of the L or E mounts. I know there will be some small amount of loss in af speed, but being that neither of these focal lengths is really meant for sports that will be fine. This lens will be to the L-mount what the Tamron is to the sony. As to which is better Tracy is %100 correct it is all in what you use it for and who your equipment manufacturer is.

Hey, @TracyDanielDavis I think this lens had the function to utilize lens correction if I'm not mistaken. Inside the camera, menus should be an option to correct for things like the "bowing" or aberration among other things. Let me know if you found your way to that and if it fixes that for you. If so I think this would be a great lens addition for those who need the wide aspect it offers. Thanks! and keep up the great videos because you have a great flow and personality along with very good video production.

Hey Dan, thanks for this great video. Until you mentioned that the weight of the Canon version is different than the Sony version I didn't notice that they are using a different optical formula than each other and what I see from the MTF charts it seems that the Sony version is better than Sony 16-35 f/2.8 GM at the wide end where the Canon version was noticeably less sharp. Great review....I really appreciate the time and effort it must take while doing your regular pro photography work to put together a video like this. The 14mm to 16mm switch views were helpful. My current situation is this: 11-year Nikon pro photographer, can't stand the constant oil spots on my Nikon D750 anymore, no point in going with another DSLR, Sony is way ahead of Nikon in mirrorless camera bodies and light years ahead in mirrorless specific lenses, so I pre-ordered the a7r iv. I do a lot of rural land real estate work and have been using the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 SP (original) lens on the D750. In my research I was afraid of paying so much for the Sony 16-35mm and not even getting the same width as before, and the Tamron for Sony at 17mm not nearly wide enough. So I eventually found the Sigma, and pre-ordered it before watching your video. Your video though has cemented in my mind it was the right choice. You must have been lucky to get your lens as B&H, Adorama, Amazon, no one has it on September 3, 2019! Can't wait to get this lens out in the desert here in New Mexico and in the city too for interiors. The distortion seems very minimal to start with even at 14mm. Thanks again!

Jason Collin Hey Jason! You won’t regret going to the A7R IV! I was tempted to get it myself but since I’m predominantly a videographer I’m holding out for the A7S III and will use the A7 III for photos.

@@TracyDavis904 Thanks Tracy . . . I actually canceled my backordered order from Adorama and today got the lens from Bedford Camera and Video with it already shipping out for Friday (two days from now) delivery. I could have already had it sitting on my desk if I didn't hold out waiting for Adorama so long. I have another question for you if you don't mind, I will need a second Sony camera as a backup to the a7R IV and for mounting a 70-200mm lens on when shooting events. I am considering the a6300 (as the newer models still use the same sensor!) or an a7 III. For the past 3 years I have had a Nikon full frame and crop sensor pair. I like that because then the 70-200mm becomes 300mm. However, maybe I can live without that and I should just have the benefit of having two full frame cameras? Likewise, having already spent a small fortune on the a7R IV and four Sony/Sigma lenses, I am thinking the Sony 70-200mm f/4 might be good enough if it is usable at ISO 6400 and up on either of the two Sony bodies I mentioned above and save a ton as Adorama has excellent rated used f/4 for only $999. Thanks for any thoughts you may have!

Why did you pick this one over the Sony 12-24mm f/4? Because the price or the f/2.8 or both? I rented the Sony one for interior photography and it's really, really sharp. Don't know the video AF performance, but I'm guessing it's really good too, almost all native Sony lenses have fast AF.

Thank you for the review. This is only the 2nd video I've seen of this lens (the other one was from a camera store that was also in Florida) I've ruled out the Tamron 17-28 as the images don't look as crispy as this lens. Now to determine if I want to drop the extra 700 bucks on the 16-35 Gmaster for that extra reach or get this lens and have that 2mm difference on the opposite end and save some money. I currently have the Tamron 28 - 75 and the Sony 85mm 1.8. I think I'd be happier with the 16-35 because of the extra reach and that 2mm doesn't seem like THAT big of a difference, but my wallet certainly says ouch to that choice! Decisions decisions.... Either way, thanks again for the video! Subed. =)
