Paul Dukas: L'Apprenti Sorcier (Piano transcription by B.Berrut)
Beatrice Berrut plays her own transcription of Paul Dukas' mind-blowing work, the Sorcerer's Apprentice. Recorded and filmed at Théâtre du Crochetan, Monthey, Switzerland, in June 2024 on a mighty Bösendorfer VC 280.
Cameras: Christian Berrut and Vincent Roch. Sound&editing : Christian Berrut.
The music is based on a poem by Goethe :
"That old sorcerer has vanished
And for once has gone away!
Spirits called by him, now banished,
My commands shall soon obey.
Every step and saying
That he used, I know,
And with sprites obeying
My arts I will show.
Flow, flow onward
Stretches many
Spare not any
Water rushing,
Ever streaming fully downward
Toward the pool in current gushing.
Come, old broomstick, you are needed,
Take these rags and wrap them round you!
Long my orders you have heeded,
By my wishes now I've bound you.
Have two legs and stand,
And a head for you.
Run, and in your hand
Hold a bucket too.
Flow, flow onward
Stretches many,
Spare not any
Water rushing,
Ever streaming fully downward
Toward the pool in current gushing.
See him, toward the shore he's racing
There, he's at the stream already,
Back like lightning he is chasing,
Pouring water fast and steady.
Once again he hastens!
How the water spills,
How the water basins
Brimming full he fills!
Stop now, hear me!
Ample measure
Of your treasure
We have gotten!
Ah, I see it, dear me, dear me.
Master's word I have forgotten!
Ah, the word with which the master
Makes the broom a broom once more!
Ah, he runs and fetches faster!
Be a broomstick as before!
Ever new the torrents
That by him are fed,
Ah, a hundred currents
Pour upon my head!
No, no longer
Can I please him,
I will seize him!
That is spiteful!
My misgivings grow the stronger.
What a mien, his eyes how frightful!
Brood of hell, you're not a mortal!
Shall the entire house go under?
Over threshold over portal
Streams of water rush and thunder.
Broom accurst and mean,
Who will have his will,
Stick that you have been,
Once again stand still!
Can I never, Broom, appease you?
I will seize you,
Hold and whack you,
And your ancient wood
I'll sever,
With a whetted axe I'll crack you.
He returns, more water dragging!
Now I'll throw myself upon you!
Soon, O goblin, you'll be sagging.
Crash! The sharp axe has undone you.
What a good blow, truly!
There, he's split, I see.
Hope now rises newly,
And my breathing's free.
Woe betide me!
Both halves scurry
In a hurry,
Rise like towers
There beside me.
Help me, help, eternal powers!
Off they run, till wet and wetter
Hall and steps immersed are Iying.
What a flood that naught can fetter!
Lord and master, hear me crying! -
Ah, he comes excited.
Sir, my need is sore.
Spirits that I've cited
My commands ignore.
"To the lonely
Corner, broom!
Hear your doom.
As a spirit
When he wills, your master only
Calls you, then 'tis time to hear it.""

Mahler: Symphony no.6 - Andante Moderato (Piano Transcription)

Beatrice Berrut plays her own transcription of Mahler’s Sixth Symphony. The 6th symphony which was nicknamed, though not by him, Tragic, was actually written at a happy time for Mahler. He completed it in 1903 after having married the 21-year-old Alma Schindler in 1902, and while he was composing the work, his daughter Maria Anna was born. Mahler wrote his music during his summer vacations, whi...

The Piano Sonata in G major D. 894, Op. 78 by Franz Schubert is a sonata for solo piano, completed in October 1826. The work is sometimes called the "Fantasie", a title which the publisher Tobias Haslinger, rather than Schubert, gave to the first movement of the work. It was the last of Schubert's sonatas published during his lifetime, and was later described by Robert Schumann as the "most per...

Liszt's Consolations, also referred to by the title Six Pensées poétiques, reflect an atmosphere of sweetness and serenity. These miniatures portray a Franz Liszt bathed in light, indulging his pen in the ecstasy of contemplation. Very emotional rendition of a very emotional piano music. Thank you very much! New Sub here.

😮🇧🇷
Wonderful playing!!
Bravo Beatrice!!!
I've listened to soo many piano versions now , I'm trying to learn this piece but I'm a novice I like the playing and the skill but I feel the bass should be soft that's how I hear this in my mind It is One harp playing the bass with the orchestra in the upper violins and middle registers cellos at least that's what I think . Am I wrong?
This is actually my favorite of your performances of Bach/Kempff's Siciliano! The visual of the video is also very beautiful and fitting. Thank you for your exquisite performance.
Please record/film your other transcriptions please!!🙏

Beautiful transcription and piano playing. Well thought-out camera work and excellent sound. Thank you!
Magnifico!!!
This is truly amazing. Not just a dazzling show of fireworks, but your transcription made me listen to 'L'Apprenti' with fresh ears, and what a wonderful work it is! The explosion and elision of themes at around 8'05 is just too good for words. Thank you!!
Dear Beatrice, I have followed your music for many years - this larghetto is simply himmlich in your hands, THANK you!
All the best !

why did I think it was by Beethoven by just listening to the opening?!
I somehow don't understand Mahler, but I understand the deep feeling of Beatrice. It's from heart and soul and seems without filters.
