- Beatrice Berrut plays her own transcription of Mahler’s Sixth Symphony.
The 6th symphony which was nicknamed, though not by him, Tragic, was actually written at a happy time for Mahler. He completed it in 1903 after having married the 21-year-old Alma Schindler in 1902, and while he was composing the work, his daughter Maria Anna was born.
Mahler wrote his music during his summer vacations, which the family spent in a villa he’d built at Maiernigg on the Wörthersee. Having built the house, he built a garden chalet for his composing room, where he could work in solitude (mostly). According to Alma Mahler, he built the family into the symphony, with Alma represented by the 2nd theme in the first movement and his two children’s rhythmic games on the seashore for the Scherzo movement. The timeline is probably not correct since the couple’s second child wasn’t born until 1904, after the symphony was finished, and the first child, Maria, was less than a year old, but we’ll give some leeway for artistic imagination.
The order of the movements has changed over the years with the middle two movements originally being in the opposite order. In the first edition of the score in 1906, the Scherzo was the second movement and the Andante the third. In the second and third editions and at its premiere, the Scherzo was moved to be the third movement and the Andante was the second movement.

Mahler's symphonism has somehow always been special to me. It reflects many things at the same time, bringing both sorrowful and joyful melodies and chords densely interwoven, It attracts a listener with unpredictable harmonic speech emerging from linear movements of insruments thus producing enlarged and enriched chordal possibilities. Sixth is among my favourites because of prevailing beauty and calmness, compared to more nervous Fifth or Eighth. It must be quite a challenge to make your own description from such a huge score, to decide what to point out and what to ignore. I am delighted with the way you arrange Mahler's notes for piano and how you add a lot of expression to it. It reveals completely new dimension of Mahler's beautiful music.
Thank you for this great comment ! What to keep or what to loose in such luscious scores is indeed a central question, and it is sometimes hard to sacrifice amazing voices, but a pianist has only ten fingers 😉 I am very happy if you enjoyed it and found it relevant. All best wishes, Beatrice
This mvmt has been my peace and solitude for the Pandemic years. Thank you for a wonderful transcription
👏👏👏
I don’t know why the Adagietto from the 5th is more famous than this Andante. It’s just as, if not more beautiful!
I guess the Adagietto was made famous by the Visconti movie🤔
My favorite piano player.Pure soul.
I somehow don't understand Mahler, but I understand the deep feeling of Beatrice. It's from heart and soul and seems without filters.
SO BEAUTIFUL BEATRICE....BRAVO!
Contemplative and feels like submerging into the self. Reflective of hidden facets of the gigantic symphonic work. Thanks a million!
Another fantastic Mahler arrangement and performance.
Thank you! Great to read you enjoyed it:) with my best wishes, Beatrice

Immensa Beatrice! L'espressività che riesce a far emergere dalla trascrizione pianistica dell'Andante della sesta sinfonia di Mahler è indescrivibile.

Fantastic performance and I am really looking forward to watching you on Sunday morning at Wigmore Hall in London!
Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed it :) All best wishes, Beatrice
Played magnificently. I actually prefer this adagio over the one in the 5th symphony, or any of the others for that matter. I can only wonder what Beethoven, Mozart, & Wagner would have thought upon hearing Mahler's music.
Thank you for your nice lines! An amazing slow movement indeed, full of spirituality and verticality. I can’t but only imagine than at least Mozart would have loved Mahler :)). Best wishes, Beatrice
Bravo
I love this transcription; Beatrice Berrut channels the whole orchestra in a glorious recreation of this wonderful piece, I think my favorite part is 4:20 or so in this version, with her gorgeous theme with scintillating accompaniment with the right hand. It lovely how, with the piano, she evokes the crystalline playing in e.g Bernstein's recording at 4:45 or so. She brings out the whole orchestra with the piano, with no need for its range of instruments. Superb. 🤩😍
So nice to read you! Thanks a lot for your kind words and best wishes ! Beatrice

Very nice!
Thank you Alice 😍🙏🏻
Awesome pianist ❤
Thank you Michaella

Would pay for this transcription! any chance of buying a pdf?
Also, I read your program suggestion, "movement." It is a brilliant idea -- perhaps debussy's images book 1 no. 3, "mouvement" as an encore?
Dear Brian, thank you for your message! The transcription will be published in the course of the year and I’ll post it here once it is available. Debussy is a great idea as an encore, I’ll think about it:) all the best, Beatrice
Are you the author of the enchantment?
Mahler is the author of the enchantement, I am merely the transcriber and the interpreter ! But glad if you enjoyed it :) all best wishes, Beatrice
Not merely good taste of mine and merely yours - keep pacing!
🙏🏻❤️
wow so cool,Unfortunately, the recording is too poor.
Well, I am glad you still could enjoy the music. Many greetings, Beatrice
