    I clearly remember the first time I heard the Verklärte Nacht, as it profoundly stunned me! It was the most enchanting music, and being a pianist, I felt really sorry that I could get no access to it.
    Years after, having experienced transcribing music quite a bit through my work on Mahler's symphonies, I felt time had come for me to tackle the Transfigured Night. The first version I made of it was close to its original sextet version, in which the polyphony is very thick and all strings are almost in the same register. In a word, it didn't work at all. I threw it all into trash and decided to use the original version as a map through a long journey, keeping only the themes and materials I thought were most important, and getting rid of all the rest, replacing it by pianistic formulas. There is one short section where I couldn't find any pianistic solution, so I decided to cut it out. This is why I decided to call this a 'Paraphrase' instead of a transcription.
    The influence of Liszt, Ravel and Scriabin are important in my writing, and even if not pretending having even a hint of their genius, their light inspired me and guided me through what has been the most challenging work I ever made. But this music was worth the doubts, the epiphanies, the countless hours of writing, erasing, and the sweat and tears I spent on it were worth it : I now can play it on the piano!
    A few lines by Richard Dehmel, with whom it all started :
    TRANSFIGURED NIGHT
    "Two people walk through a bare, cold grove;
    The moon races along with them, they look into it.
    The moon races over tall oaks,
    No cloud obscures the light from the sky,
    Into which the black points of the boughs reach.
    A woman’s voice speaks:
    I’m carrying a child, and not yours,
    I walk in sin beside you.
    I have committed a great offense against myself.
    I no longer believed I could be happy
    And yet I had a strong yearning
    For something to fill my life, for the joys of
    Motherhood
    And for duty; so I committed an effrontery,
    So, shuddering, I allowed my sex
    To be embraced by a strange man,
    And, on top of that, I blessed myself for it.
    Now life has taken its revenge:
    Now I have met you, oh, you.
    She walks with a clumsy gait,
    She looks up; the moon is racing along.
    Her dark gaze is drowned in light.
    A man’s voice speaks:
    May the child you conceived
    Be no burden to your soul;
    Just see how brightly the universe is gleaming!
    There’s a glow around everything;
    You are floating with me on a cold ocean,
    But a special warmth flickers
    From you into me, from me into you.
    It will transfigure the strange man’s child.
    You will bear the child for me, as if it were mine;
    You have brought the glow into me,
    You have made me like a child myself.
    He grasps her around her ample hips.
    Their breath kisses in the breeze.
    Two people walk through the lofty, bright night."
    Special thanks to 'Théâtre du Baladin' in Savièse, Switzerland and Service de la Culture de l'État du Valais for their generous support.

    The best solo piano transcription of this wonderful work I've ever heard. Color, dynamics, harmonics and an intricate texture that captures Schonberg's stunning strings. Liszt would have approved of this (if not written it himself).

    After listening to your great transcription and execution of Mahler's Adagietto, I have also had the privilege to hear this paraphrase: here, in my opinion, you really did a masterpiece! You have got the essence of this music and, despite Schomberg and his scholars never published something for piano solo by Verklärte Nacht, I believe your work gets the goal making this music well able to be successfully and faithfully played also by a pianist. Obviously, the listeners' plause depends also on the pianist capabilities.... Anyway, yours is also a great, very beautiful performance.
    Said that, I hope you will soon care and play also the Opus 1 by Alban Berg...

    Je guettais impatiemment votre retour, et vous voilà enfin avec cette passionnante et très émouvante paraphrase de « La Nuit Transfigurée ». Quelle magnifique surprise ! Merci !
    Pour nous autres, auditeurs ébahis devant l’œuvre qui nous est offerte, souvent naïfs, la perception des souffrances de l’artiste dans son processus de création demeure toujours, quand elle n’est pas totalement occultée, en deçà des réalités. Et pourtant... L’œuvre n’est rien qui n’est pas profondément imprégnée de la sueur et des larmes qui l’ont engendrée.
    Les illustres Maîtres, Liszt, Scriabine, Ravel, qui ont guidé vos doigts, auraient avec fierté, je le crois sincèrement, épongé votre front et séché vos larmes.
    Encore merci !

    Amazing, a Transfigured Transfigured Night! As with your Mahler transcriptions, there is a unity and coherence that comes from using the piano rather than multiple instruments. And I love the way you paraphrased the original, especially near the end. The latter parts kept reminding me of your wonderful Liszt performances, and I feel that in paraphrasing you have added his spirit somehow to this piece. I felt that most strongly in the Im Zeitmass, which kept making me think of the Ballade 2. I listened to the usual version for contrast, and I could not hear any Liszt there. Absolutely brilliant; you have made a unique and wonderful piece. I love this.

    Like the piano solo version of Ravel's La Valse and Vyacheslav Gryaznov's fantastic piano duo version of the second suite of Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe
    I am thrilled by this new surprise of a piano solo paraphrase of Arnold Schönberg's unique piece Transfigured Night,
    which I have so far only known in the original string sextet version, in the arrangement for string orchestra and Steuermanns for piano trio.
    Would the equally unique Adagio from Mahler's unfinished 10th Symphony also be transcribed for piano or piano duo ?

  • @samaritan29

    Bravo.....(!) It is regretful that the composer whom i admired most at the turn of the 20th century - the composers of the austro-german tradition, had gradually become an entirely orchestral tradition. And I think this is one of the great pities in piano repertoire that people such as Mahler and Wagner and strauss, never composed anything for the piano, yet I hear influences from the three composers in this work. i think the Verklärte Nacht fits in beautifully with this whole aesthetic and it seems to be the closest representation in keyboard literature of this sort of overwhelming colouristic sound.

    • @BeatriceBerrut
      @BeatriceBerrut  Před 3 lety +2

      You are absolutely right, and I would add Bruckner to the list. I was so frustrated I started writing paraphrases and transcriptions to fill the gap. Btw, Strauss wrote a few early piano pieces (op.9), that are absoluty beautiful. If you don't know them, I'd recommend you listen to them... best wishes, Beatrice

    Oh WOW!!! A mysterious performance of a mysterious piece inspired by a mysterious poem! Like finding a Puzzle within a Puzzle inside a Puzzle!
    Everything started with a poem by “Richard Dehmel", the poem had a significant spiritual impact on “Arnold Schoenberg", one of the most controversy composers of all time, and then lead to composing a controversial music piece and finally a mysterious and lovey performance by Bieatrice Berrut!
    The reputation of composer Arnold Schoenberg has been always associated with controversy. Some believe he was one of the most genius composers ever lived, the others stand in the opposite side! The opposing views arise from the complexity of Schoenberg’s intellect and his complex personality and the depth of his theoretical knowledge and writings. He is remembered as a composer of imagination, but also be known as theorist and teacher of great insight, and a painter!
    The influence of Dehmel’s poetry helped Schoenberg to bridge his neo-Brahmsian phase into his pseudo-Wagnerian phase. In a letter to Dehmel dated December 1912, he wrote: “For your poems have had a decisive influence on my development as a composer. They were what first made me try to find a new tone in the lyrical mood. Or rather, I found it even without looking, simply by reflecting in music what your poems stirred up in me.” So really seems like with “Transfigured Night", Schoenberg resolved, at least for himself, one conflict, the Brahms/Wagner controversy!
    And the last leg of this mystery, was this piano arrangement and performance by Ms. Beatrice Berrut. One can hardly find a pianist who take a risk to explore a misty field like this, it really needs maturity, skillset and high level of musical understanding.
    Well done Ms. Berrut, I admire your passion and braveness in exploring this rarely-touched forest, there is no doubt a poem like this and a piece like this, deserve to be played by an artist like you!

    Simply astonishing. A brilliant performance and contribution to Schoenberg's legacy IMO. I couldn't understand Schoenberg in my youth, though I wrote 12-tone composition exercises as a comp student in the mid 80s. I was a kid from a small south Texas town and making sense of serialism wasn't exactly on my bucket list, but I knew Verklarte Nacht was pre-serialism and felt I would come back to it one day. Today's the day after hearing your performance. As someone returning to piano playing and composing after almost 40 years of career (non-music), marriage, kids, and life's ups and downs, hearing this performance and piano paraphrase is an experience of wonderment for me. I'm excited about studying the original score and how your paraphrase treats it. Bravissimo and standing ovation!

Dans votre paraphrase, je me plais à rêver à ce qu'aurait pu faire Schoenberg dans la magnificence orchestrale héritée de son Pelléas et Mélisande. Ayant moi-même joué la partie pianistique de la version pour trio par Steurmann de cette oeuvre poignante, votre réalisation honore l'original. Quelle réussite de toute beauté.

Sie haben mir damit grosse Freude gemacht, und Ihre Art der Hingabe zur Musik hat mich auch sehr glücklich gemacht! 😃Und obwohl Sie von jedem Instrument dessen bestmöglichen Potenzial rausholen, habe ich heute trotzdem Bösendorfer wie hier ein bisschen vermisst, der Ihnen musikalischen Potenzial noch mehr untermalt hätte... Beatrice, con il Suo talento nella musica e la Sua gestualità nell'eseguirla, incarna la spiritualità della musica stessa e i sentimenti dell'autore quando ne è stato ispirato. Non so se mi sono spiegato bene, ma penso che in Lei ci sia tutto quanto occorra per definirLa una vera artista e una grande interprete. Abbia i miei modesti e sentitissimi, ma purtroppo virtuali, applausi.

    Quelle superbe transcription, quel travail et quelle interprétation, je suis bluffée!! En effet Liszt approuverait. C'est encore plus beau que la version orchestrale. L'écriture est si pianistique et si naturelle qu'on jurerait que l’œuvre a initialement été conçue pour le piano. J'espère que cet opus restera une pièce centrale du répertoire de Béatrice Berrut. Deux personnes vont dans la forêt, chauve et froide.
    La lune les accompagne, ils regardent en soi.
    La lune passe aux dessus des hauts chênes,
    Pas un nuage ne trouble la lumière céleste
    Vers laquelle les fagots noirs s'étendent;
    La voix d'une femme parle.
    "Je porte un enfant et pas de toi,
    Je vais à côté de toi dans le péché;
    Je me suis gravement compromise,
    Je ne croyais plus au bonheur
    Et j' avais pourtant un lourd désir
    D'une raison de vie, de bonheur maternel
    “Et de devoir, puis je me suis affranchie.
    J'ai alors toute frémissante
    Laisser posséder mon sexe par un étranger,
    Et pour cela je me suis encore bénite.
    Maintenant la vie s'est vengée,
    Maintenant je t'ai rencontré, toi, ô toi."
    Elle va d'un pas incertain.
    Elle relève le regard, la lune la suit.
    Son regard sombre se noie dans la lumière.
    La voix d'un homme parle.
    "Que cet enfant qui est conçu
    Ne soit pas une charge pour ton âme.
    O regarde comme l'univers brille clairement !
    Il y a un lustre de toute part.
    Tu chasses avec moi sur la mer glaciale,
    Mais une propre chaleur rayonne
    De toi en moi, de moi en toi.
    Elle va transfigurer l'enfant étranger.
    Tu vas l'enfanter pour moi, de moi,
    Tu as apporté un éclat de lumière en moi,
    Tu m'as moi-même refait enfant."
    Il embrasse sa forte taille,
    Leur souffle se mêle dans les airs.
    Deux personnes vont dans la nuit haute et claire.
