  • Rachmaninoff piano concerto no 2 is one of the most important and beautiful works written for piano and orchestra. It was premiered in 1901 with the composer playing the piano part and was enthusiastically received.
    Compounded by problems in his personal life, Rachmaninoff fell into a depression that lasted for several years. His second piano concerto confirmed his recovery from clinical depression and writer's block, cured by courses of hypnotherapy and psychotherapy and helped by support from his family and friends. The concerto was dedicated to Nikolai Dahl, the physician who had done much to restore Rachmaninoff's self-confidence. The majestic second theme of the third movement can be heard as an anthem to life.
    Piano : Beatrice Berrut
    Israel Camerata under Avner Biron
    Live at the Tel Aviv Museum of Arts.
    Arrangement for chamber orchestra by Mordechai Rechtman.

    I have probably listened to this piece 100 times, but never in my 14 years of life have i ever heard it played with this much clarity of emotion. i felt that within the DEPTHS of my soul. I felt like it was a story both Beatrice and Rachmaninoff were telling. like something only THEY can convey no matter who plays the song. I love this so much.

    Such intelligent playing. The dynamic shading and the slight rubati are just right. Breathtaking.

    I came across this quite randomly, started watching and suddenly found myself in tears. The magic of music, especially played by someone who doesn't distract with extreme body movements yet still conveys so much emotion through face and hands. Thank you, beatrice!

    its funny how good this sounds on my simple computer speakers, maybe its the sensation of it being live...in the event, this is really fine, both the work and the playing....i think i am starting to separate what happens from overhearing something , that theme around 2:50, due to recordings, and poor ones too, from the composition itself. He sounds like a bridge from Brahms or an extension of Brahms, Russ style, into the 20th century? Late late Romantic?
    Watching a musician who you value helps, b/c like with a teacher you respect you are interested in hearing what they hear.....there is so much in this one i really like. I hope you make tons more recordings! you get such a delightfully light bell like tone on this on the highs , but again, like all what i have heard you play so far i hear all the phrases, (and the forte is never needlessly violent/harsh/uncontrolled) so its interesting and not just a "wall of sound" ....thanks!

      You are right that this is one of Mahler's most beautiful slow movements! And can't help but being sure that Beethoven or Mozart would love Mahler - I can't swear for Wagner ;) all the best to you, Beatrice

    • @carloshumphrey1
      @carloshumphrey1 Před 8 měsíci

      Perhaps Mahler would be a bit too innovative for our classical period like Beethoven, but I'm sure Wagner would be interested in his innovations. But you would know better than me. @@BeatriceBerrut

    Magnifique, Beatrice! The Rach 3rd is maybe a more accomplished piece, but I feel that the 2nd is more confessional and carries more emotional weight. I have the same feeling about Brahms 1 vs Brahms 2. I need to visit Tel Aviv one day.

    • @BeatriceBerrut
      @BeatriceBerrut  Před 3 lety +2

      I do too prefer the 2nd piano concerto by Rachmaninoff, because I have the feeling that with less he says more. But this is very personal :) But Brahms 2 triggered my vocation, so it forever will be my favorite ! And yes, you should visit Tel Aviv, an amazing and vibrant city. Best wishes, Beatrice
