  • Beatrice plays the second Ballade by Liszt.
The Ballade No. 2 in B minor, S. 171, is a piano composition by Franz Liszt, written in 1853. Liszt plied one of his favorite genres-the programmatic one movement tone poem designed to provide both the variety and unity of a sonata or symphony.
He drew his program from Gottfried August Bürger’s once widely read Gothic horror ballad Lenore. Punctuated with the grisly refrain "The dead ride quickly! Are you afraid," the poem tells of Lenore’s wild hundred-mile midnight ride with the zombie of her recently slain soldier-fiancé, toward a cemetery where their nuptials are solemnized amid a riotous gathering of skeletons and spectres.
The ballad is based largely on two themes: a broad opening melody underpinned by menacing rumbles and a luminous ensuing chordal meditation. These themes are repeated a half-step lower; then march-like triplet-rhythms unleash a flood of virtuosity. Eventually, Liszt transforms the opening melody into a rocking major-key cantabile and reiterates this with ever-more grandiose exultation. The luminous chords provide a contemplative close.
Live at Espace Consonance in Saxon (CH), video by Steve Gillioz.

Personne ne joue Liszt comme vous. Le maître doit être fier ! Une maîtrise parfaite de la sonorité, des lignes, de l'agogie. Et tout dans la sobriété, qui évite les effets de "cirque". Merci !

Wonderful performance. I heard her CD "Totentanz", too. I feel that she deeply understands the intention of the composer.

Quelle belle musique bien jouée ! J'ai appris à connaître Liszt avec cette Ballade jouée par Jorge Bolet et je trouve votre version toute aussi belle. Beaucoup de sensibilité.

Wow, this piece had my attention right from your passionate playing of its low-toned, vigorous, almost thunderous opening. And then so many wonderful melodies, some light and almost cheerful, some darker and passionate. My favorite must be the sublime last part starting at 10:40 or so, which is so utterly mesmerizing that I hardly want to breath until you are done playing. When you play, it really is der klang, der berührt, this time on a Steinway. A thrill and a joy to hear. Thank you.

Yes, I am crazy about this piece too. It has a strong relationship to the sonata in b minor, and is often portrayed as its little sister...

@@BeatriceBerrut So nice that you wrote that, since this piece reminded me of the B Minor Sonata, especially near the end. And, given this glorious performance, I will definitely find time this weekend to listen uninterrupted to your playing of the B Minor Sonata,
