As keyboardists we generally go through life playing subtle sounds. Usually it’s guitar players who get to make giant distorted screaming sounds. As someone who grew up playing rock with loud guitars my whole life, there’s probably some jealous part of me that always wanted to be the one making huge sounds. Doesn't even have analog filters, 3rd wave + osmose is 100x better sound quality and flexibility by the way. The montage M DOWNGRADED and uses a f*king stock clavinova power supply on the inside lmao. Garbage instrument.
I think the problem with modular is costs and complexity and limitations in saving patches.
modular synths make zero sense for gigging musicians. weight, complexity and time you don't have.
you performing live to a click track? the whole band is synced to it?
sam, you might consider not trying to be funny.
It’s a remake of an early instrument. They remade it accurately quirks and all. I find it be an inspiration goldmine. Page 2 is your friend! PS: that is NOT an initialized patch.
Wasn’t the first Little Phatty the Tribute Addition? Then came the Stage if I’m correct
In the band where I play there is Montage 6 and midi keyboard NI. How to send and have always piano on the midi keyboard? I will change the performances on the montage, but want to have piano always on the midi keyboard (88 keys)
i just want the mini one
Knowing this model is digital, riddle me this. Could you deactivate the 8-second time-out?
With regards to the lighting, Roli make the Luni which has backlit keys. It's a 24 key keyboard but i think it can be expanded and snapped together. So it's doubtful they will put backlit keys on the Rise 3.
You lied to me, Sam Gutman. You lied to me. Your video shows up as "Is this the HOTTEST lead synth in Hip Hop?" under Google search. Since I'm looking for a hip hop lead synth, I click on it, only to find the real title is "Playing Look at Me Now with Busta Rhymes at Coachella" and the video is just you talking about how you got to play the lead synth at the concert of some guy I've never heard of, and it turns out the "hottest lead synth" you're describing in the title is actually just a sine wave with some reverb that you slapped a whole bunch of modulation on going up and down randomly. While the sound is interesting, it's nowhere near the "hottest lead synth in hip hop." Needless to say, I will never forgive you for these transgressions.
Awesome video! Excellent, practical and clearly explained.
Great Video! I never dug modular. Love creating easy accessible presets too much. Nice job addressing your haters. 👍 subscribed

U played with spanky 😮😮 damn this must be heaven 😊
Did he just casually performed with busta¿ haha
Maybe one of the best moog synth for me ! the last real Moog for sure !
You're playing at Coachella and can't afford the Arturia V-Collection? It's crazy to buy each synth individually. It should be included in the synth imho, otherwise it's a preset keyboard. I got the V-Collection for $199 in a sale but I spend about upgrading to the new additions to be honest. I do love Arturia though.
haha I have V-collection now. Loving it.
I’ve played one recently and and have noticed latency. Have you noticed any key lag or latency?
nope haven't noticed that. Are you playing it standalone or using as a MIDI controller?
I wouldn't trust this thing at all
Sam it’s so cool to hear about what it’s like to play gigs like this. I’m destined to small bars in NYC - and I love it - but it’s so cool to see your level of playing/performing/musicianship. Thank you!!
This is gold! Thank you for this!
Thanks for spending $10k per hour at this rehearsal space to bring us this video
I play in cover bands, we have gigs with 50 or 100 people. We have fun but of course we are not professionals... It is exciting to see what a real pro uses for big venues and tours! Yes, I use Pigments as my swiss knife for a lot of sounds. It can be soft analog for seventies prog rock, or terribly harsh for nineties electro dance. Really flexible and performing. But I don't like Astrolab because it assumes you use only Arturia plugins. They are nice but I prefer to keep a computer on stage and have the freedom to use whatever I want. I rule my live setup with GigPerformer, and it's rock solid.
A FEW THINGS I GOT WRONG / HAVE SINCE LEARNED 1- The Astrolab DOES come with Analog Lab Pro. I may have made it sound like you have to pay for ALL the software. 2- You CAN edit the most important parameters of a patch (like ADSR on an analog synth) in Analog Lab WITHOUT buying the VST. 3- You CAN add presets to playlists and organize your sound banks ON the Astrolab, without the computer. I simply missed this. 4- The individual instruments ARE $150 each BUT the whole V-Collection with 30+ instruments is $599. 5- You CAN achieve more onboard control by connecting an external MIDI controller, and then you have access to 9 additional parameters. I have become a much bigger fan of this keyboard since the time of making this video. The number 1 thing that changed my mind was falling in love with the software. My main contention in the video was that you needed the software to really unlock the keyboard. This is still true, however, the software is really really great and so I think it’s worth it. I love making a patch in Pigments, loading it right into the keyboard, and then playing a show without my computer. It WOULD be nice if there was more onboard control (without plugging in an external controller), BUT as long as I set up my Macros how I want them, it doesn't bother me.
Thanks! As a dude who plays live I really appreciate this update.
Hi Sam. Thanks for much for sharing your story. So much of it resonates with my own story. I also took lessons in the Taubman approach for approx 18 months which shifted things initially, however ultimately I didn’t like how aspects of the approach felt in my body so I decided not to pursue it to the extent the approach requires. Since then I’ve studied Body Mapping and Alexander Technique which has had the most impact in helping me play well. I gather you are aware of these. I’m curious to know how you are going now. Do you mind sharing? Also, are you aware of the work of Nancy Reese, Sheila Paige and Kay Hooper? If not, do check them out. Cheers Andrew
Does this push out the roli/equator?
nope! I switch up my rig all the time just so I don't get too comfortable. I still play the seaboard all the time and often bring it to shows.
@@SamGutman I enjoy this about you and your videos, BTW! It’s fun that you are willing to explore new gear in high pressure live scenarios, and it’s to your credit as a musician that you are so adaptable! 😁
Great review. I'm intrigued by the AstroLab, but bought an NI Kontrol s61 months ago and feel that I have more control with that via NKS - even though I'm tethered to my laptop. All that said, I own the V Collection and the idea of not needing my laptop has me looking at it closely.
I have had Pigments from Day 1, never used them in an actual project.. But this just proves that in the right hands, a craftperson can make almost anything work...
Love hearing how the sausage gets made.
oh it be sizzlin'
So there's no sound engine\library close enough to Pigments in this synth? I don't get it. Why one still need to use plugin while having pretty awesome synth from the same manufacturer... you know if i have Roland Fantom i don't need Zen Core plugin anymore... maybe there's something that i miss?
Could have this wrong, but my understanding of AstroLab is that you generally need to VSTs to *design* sounds, but once you’ve designed them you can transfer and*play* them directly on the keyboard. I think that’s the idea, but don’t quote me. 😁
@@bodhibeats8257 i think so too, but if i'm buying Astrolab will it have them Pigments sounds or something like that on board? i mean presets. I mean the hardware synth just gotta beat the crap out of plugin or else it's a glorified midi keyboard and VST in the box, right? Dunno maybe i'm wrong
So the way it works is that the Astrolab comes with all the Pigments presets...but you can't really edit them or create your own presets ON the keyboard. For that you have to have the software. But once you have the software you can tweak things, create them from scratch, etc, and then load them right into the keyboard.
@@djkanyon You can certainly make the argument that most any digital synth is “just” a glorified MIDI keyboard and VST. I certainly think that’s what my Hydrasynth is. But…what’s wrong with that? I find it really convenient to have a powerful digital synth like MiniFreak or Pigments or Massive in hardware, with knobs and buttons perfectly labeled and designed (unlike a MIDI controller). Yeah, it’s “just” a VST in a box…but why is that bad? 😁
@@SamGutman ok got it! i was like afraid that there's no Pigments sounds inside... thanks, now the smoke is cleared
great insight dude. Arturia need to comp you every new keyboard they release
5:05 😂 man these videos are priceless , Is there any chance you can do a Patreon or something like that with your patches (montage/modx/Arturia)?
I am definitely going to do SOME kind of Patreon-type thing soon. I think I'm gonna set it up through my own site though. When that's ready I'll be sure to mention it in videos. Thanks so much for your support!
Fun video! Pigments has definitely become my go-to wavetable software synth. It’s pretty similar to Serum or Vital - so there’s a good chance you don’t *need* it. But, I happen to have all three, and Pigments is my favorite of the bunch. 😁
yeah it's very quickly become one of my favorite VSTs
Omg Lauryn. Hopefully I see all u guys live one day

Amazing channel! Great music, reviews, amazing editing, you are the adam neely of keys (sorry for the comparison, you are your own musician with your own of course). Glad i discovered you! ❤ Keep going! Do you have patreon?
Thanks so much @hallerj! I certainly don't mind the comparison as I very much look up to Adam Neely. I actually do have a pattern! I haven't ever promoted it but I probably will soon start getting more serious about that and also CZcams channel memberships. Here's my pattern though! tinyurl.com/w2sabya2
Sounds like an expensive flop tbh
What happened to your Montage M?
Often backline companies are only able to get me a Montage 7 or a ModX. I guess because the M is still so new
awesome video!🎹
Curious, when you playing your sounds, they aren’t going out to the audience, right?
In a lot of these examples it's just going directly to my in-ears and camera and not going through the mains. If I'm checking my boards for monitors and front of house then it's going through the mains.
Thanks man, this video kinda reminded me of my days of tour manager's assistant... big concrete walls... echoes... soundchecks... Also them pads on Modx was really good. Oh and my two cents on keys and rock music... Keyboard in rock... as an avid rock music fan i never even understood why lead keyboards are there... i always skipped keyboard solos in Deep Purple and Rainbow (sorry Jon Lord and Don Airey)... Fast forward 30 years... still don't get it! even tho i have more keyboards now and can play some keyboard solos but why... but in jazz i love it! Dunno why.
Oh no! well to each his own! glad you like it in jazz though!
