    That pitch envelope you were hearing comes from the F. Env button in the Oscillator section - which routes the filter envelope to the oscillator pitch. 👍 Also, there are five waveforms for the main LFO - you get two of them by hitting two buttons at once. If you had it long enough to learn it, you’d get past the quirks pretty fast.

    I love mine! It's definitely my favorite synth I've ever owned. Such a hi-fi sheen from the oscillators and the filters are gorgeous!

    for your points about the Pitch bar being inverted from what we're used to on modern synths now & the transpose buttons being on/off- i believe it's because this OB-X8 (and similar reissues like the Prophet 10 and recent 2022 version Minimoog) are the direct result of folks wanting reissues of their original counterparts including the commands and button functions as they existed in the 70s. they're def different for those points you raised but it's due to the demand. if they would've changed little features like that, the folks who shell out 5K for this OBX8, Minimoog, and Prophet would then complain that the circuits and controls deviate too much from the original. Just like some folks are already doing over on GearSpace. I think the companies (Sequential and Moog) had to make a choice: use updated controls like their modern synths or appease the folks who are gonna pay for these and keep the circuit closer to the original, ya know. for example there's some folks who were complaining that the 2022 minimoog has a spring-loaded pitch wheel instead of the free-roaming one like on the originals. folks still end up complaining when the companies update little things lol

    I know I'm not the only comment about the pitch and mod levers, but to reiterate, they are designed to mimic the bending of a guitar string. Coming from that world, the levers make absolute sense to my brain. All Obies (and Matrix models) from back in the day have those classic levers. VERY easy to get precise bending when set to an octave range. Want to bend to a fifth? Find out where you thumb needs to be "braced" and then pull the paddle forward towards your thumb and bingo. Repeatable fifth bends or a flat out octave without the thumb brace. I still find it easier to hit perfect intervals on the lever than any wheel I've ever played. Or just control it with a Roli Seaboard, LOL ;)
    I've only read the manual online (don't own the X8) but I think the levers are reversible if that's what you prefer, but give the default a chance. You may find it's more intuitive than first thought.

    You mention many great points here. However, I want an OB-X8 simply because of it's sound!!!!!

    The screen where you dive to menus appears when you press the "PAGE 2" key. For OB-X8, Oberheim wanted to keep the same ergonomics as on the OB-X (the buttons/knobs are in the same places on both synths) and hide the "new" (40+) parameters in "PAGE 2".

    Sweetwater says their Netflix and TV show composers are buying multiple OBX8's (Maybe desktop versions) so listen for this sound on a TV channel soon near you! (After all, pads go a long ways under dialog and get the job done.)

    After about 5 minutes you get used to the backwards pitch wheel.

    The Prophet sounds a lot warmer, but the OBX8 sounds slightly more hi fi and clearer in the high frequencies...Both have their strengths, but I would definitely stick with the Prophet

      Mm. Yeah I’d probably agree. I think for the most part the presets on my prophet don’t have that sparkly top end.

    It’s a remake of an early instrument. They remade it accurately quirks and all. I find it be an inspiration goldmine.

    The Prophet 10 is a deal now with major price cut so good time to get one over Oberheim. I have the OB X8 but want P10 for the warmer sounds. BUT the Virus TI2 is my favorite synth that thing can do everything even if it is digital!

    Had a little jam on one at a synth meet recently and it’s the classiest sounding synth I’ve heard. Too expensive for me though.

  • @Bananskuden
    @Bananskuden Před 10 měsíci +2

    When the OB-X8 came out I was immediately baffled by the missing mixing pots. Why can't you set the oscillator and noise volume on the panel? It's one of the most basic features on any synth. The vintage OB-X has "half" and "full" mix buttons for OSC2 and noise and they didn't even keep those.

    • @SamGutman

      Right! Some of the little random things that just aren’t there is what kills me.

    Page 2 changes all the button and knob to alternate controls. You have to memorize it sort of but the screen tells you what they are when you press or rotate the knob. Auto feedback. In keeping with tradition of the original 3 units they kept the functions similar. So yeah no way to compare it unless you know how to use it. One particular musical genius explained that the ultimate character is within the final 10% of the unit or where the expense and magic reside. So true if might sound 90% equal to something else but it's that other 10% that makes all the difference.

  • @christopherpederson1021
    @christopherpederson1021 Před 10 měsíci +1

    Yea, these are both different sounding synths. The OBX is pure sheen and brilliance whereas the Prophet 5 is dark and a bit more raw. The arpeggiator section is insane and the filter is creamy and oh so smooth.

      @jno8039 Před 10 měsíci +2

      I believe he talking about the P6, and this is the OBX8 not a vintage OBX. More capable synth able to sound like an OBxa and much more close to a P5.

    Wow. That init patch is really weird. Normally on almost any other synth, an init patch will consist of 1 oscillator with full sustain on, no filtering, barebone sound. Also, the lack of Page 2 shortcuts silkscreening under the knobs is a letdown at this price point. Whoever designed the UI clearly wasn't a synth patch programmer but merely a player. I just got the Behringer UB-Xa and already it's more intuitive than this, and sounds really really good for 4 times less money than an O-X8, with twice the polyphony to boot. Thanks for sharing.

  • @Mercy_Pants
    @Mercy_Pants Před 10 měsíci +1

    It’s not meant to compete with the prophet. There are other synths out there that’ll do that like the UDO Super 6.

    • @SamGutman
      @SamGutman  Před 10 měsíci +4

      I feel like even if it wasn’t meant to it kinda does by virtue of being one of the most popular analog polysynths. They def cover most of the same ground, if not all of it.
