There is a lot that goes into putting together a keyboard rig for an international tour. In this band, I play a wide range of complicated sounds and effects, and for a fast paced show like this, I need to be able to get to any sound I need quickly.
There is no room to still be looking for the right patch as the song starts, or for my arpeggiator to accidentally be set to the wrong tempo. I had to choose exactly the right keyboards, configure the whole rig in a very specific way, and organize my patches impeccably.
I had to consider not only what board and sounds I wanted to play, but also what it makes sense to travel with, what to do if I’m short one keyboard for a show, and how to configure everything so that it works everytime.
There were a lot of variables, and not a lot of time to get it done. After a lot of considering and testing, I think I’ve settled on the perfect version of my keyboard rig just in time for the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th anniversary world tour, which we kicked off last week at Global Citizen Festival in NYC.

For sure! Although that new Montage is tempting. But I feel like it would be weird to shell out for that since I already have the ModX.
I have the prophet X, and it is very underrated, it is a beast of a synth, and I would never sell mine because it is unique at what it can do. I honestly think its the best Prophet out there.....and the best synth.
I agree the prophet X is underrated. There was a lot of hype around it's release but I don't hear much about it anymore. I think it's really good for people who like to get in there and sound design, but maybe that isn't most people.
I've had the chance to try out the prophet 6 earlier this year and I fell in love with its sonic quality and its feel
I feel like I just re-fell in love with mine recently after several years of owning it.

I see you playing with LaDerrick, y'all sound super tight! I really do need to experience "analog", I can't relate to what you mean when you mentioned that the Yamaha MODX can do passable analog sounds but analog is a whole 'nother level.
What makes analog different would be a cool video concept. There's just a depth and warmth and grittiness to it.

Oh yeah. I like it way more for those reasons rather than the sounds. The sounds are decent, but it can do so much and that’s where it really shines.
I wonder if you are going to have an interest in the new Montage 8M with the AX analog engine. It really sounds like that synth can pull off most of what you do. @@SamGutman

bte of you like the prophet sound, you reallty can't go wrong with the behringe pro 800.. it's an awesome synth which rivals my Prophet 6 in many ways at like 10% of the price.
haha yeah all the talkback mics can be distracting. necessary at times though!
good gracious....I respect your professionalism, and thank you for showing the possibilities of a great MIDI rig....however: those songs??? wow, I would want to hang myself if I had to listen to that music for more than 30 seconds.....lol
cool set up, using the Mod x as set list controller is nice ,but the whole band seems like keyboard and personnel overload for that type of music ,sound good though
yeah, sometimes it feels that way. But it also works. There's a string orchestra and a horn section and it's a huge sound and spectacle.

Hey, can you make a video explaining how you link your rig through midi and how you control it from your Yamaha MODx?
For sure. That’s a common question that I’ve gotten and that’ll probably be the next video.
How do you get the MODX to communicate with all the other boards in your rig?
MIDI
I go MIDI out of the MODX into MIDI in of the Prophet. Then MIDI Thru of the Prophet into MIDI in on the Prophet X. And each patch on the MODX contains a program change message that gets sent to the other keyboards when the patch loads. My next video will probably be a walkthrough of this.
@sam gutman, How do you set it up that all your keys changes presets by hitting one button on your master keyboard?

Seaboard is controlling Equator2 through my laptop.
How is the MODX6+ holding up on tour?
It’s going well! In some ways I wish I held out for the new Montage but also the ModX is so small and easy and that’s one of the reasons why I got it in the first place.
