After more than 40 successful years in the automotive parts aftermarket I am saying farewell to the automotive business and going into semi-retirement. I will be using my years of automotive machining, sales, marketing, and merchandising experience to manage a Model Railroad retail store. I am excited and looking forward to this change in my life and career. As an avid model railroader for many years I could not ask for a better opportunity.
The videos on my page reflect some of my interests, rail fanning, model railroading, home shop machine, and in the future I may include some wood working projects Thank you for taking your time to view and please subscribe to my channel.

Mamod SR1a Steam Roller Repair
I purchased this Mamod steam roller in like new condition. The first time that I tried to use it the firebox fell off. An obvious manufacturing defect, i set it aside and finally decided to repair it.

hi Steve just noticed you sub'd me recently, thanks very much, now contact made i have now sub'd and bell'd you and will take a look at what you get up to.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Regards Kev
Thank you for the sub. Your channel was recommended by one of the channels that I follow. Can't remember which one. I will be posting the second part of the Steam Roller video next week. Time has gotten away from me and I have been working on home projects for that last few weeks.

Looking forward to seeing that under steam!
Should be next week. Thank you for watching and commenting.
G'day Steve. Great to see you back here. Job well done. The only thing I would have ,done would be to assemble the Model first to make sure it was sitting squarely on it's Rollers.
You didn't see it in the video but I actually had the alignment marked, I had it apart and back together several times, Thank you for watching and commenting.
Very nice engine
Thank you very much!
Small channel or not, I enjoy the content.
Thank you so much. It is viewers like you that make this worth it.
Surprised you didn’t solder it too.
The smoke box is pot metal no soldering to that. Thank you for your comments and support.
Good one, Steve. And forget to press record on the camera never happens to me... well...
Sometimes you can reshoot a scene but once the part is assembled that is not a reasonable option. Thank you for watching and commenting.
WTG Steve, congrats on the subs, cheers!

Good to see you Steve. That was a delicate turning operation 👍👍
I had visions of this piece flying across the shop. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Thanks for another great video Steve
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching.
even real rollers have headstock problems. wish mine was as easy to fix.!
Isn't this a real roller? LOL Thanks for stopping by, I wish that I could help out with your real roller.
Ditto what AWDJR said. Right on
Thank you, it is good to be back.
Great to see you back on YT Steve..nice steam project too!👍
Glad you enjoyed it; I plan to do a few steam model videos. Thank you dor watching and commenting.
Interesting that you mention names. I don't mind the inscriptions, either. My Starrett 4-5" mic had 4 names on it when I bought it, each scratched out before the next. Naturally, I did the same and my initials are on the mic frame, too.
Some of my most treasured tools are the ones that I got from my grandfather that have his name inscribed on them. I feel a real connection to him when I use them. He passed when I was only 19 years old. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Wow! Super cool video! Especially at 25:00. Thanks!
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Best of luck with your eye sight getting better!
It's a miracle, I can see again. New glasses are working well, Need to get used to them. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Nice addition Steven. I bought one six or seven years ago. I often say it's the best thing I bought for my lathe. Get well my friend. My mother had cataract surgery and it was difficult for her. She's all better now.
I am looking forward to using it. Just got my new glasses today. Seeing much better now. Back to work in the shop.
Good to see you again Steve.
It is good to be seen. Thanks for stopping by.
Hi Steve, that came out nice. I haven't had much luck with 5C's and run out.
I was a little surprised with the accuracy on it. It will interesting to see if it holds when I change the collet size. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Glad to see you anytime Steve. Thanks for sharing. ATB regards from the UK

Thank you, Mr. Lang always a pleasure to see you
It is good to be back and also good to hear from you, I have been concerned about you since I had not seen any new content in awhile.
Hope things are working out for your wife Kimber!
Welcome back. Health first, take care of those eyes, can’t buy a new pair at Shars…
You are right about that, thank you for watching and commenting.
Great video,Steve,get well soon.Thank you.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Hello Steve, Nice to see you, I think it was wise to wait until your eyes had healed and spectacles are fitted before doing to much in the workshop. Nice job on the 5C collet backplate, and running true, well done. See you on the next one. Take care. Paul,,
Thank you for watching and commenting. I just got my new prescription, looking forward to improved eyesight.
Nice addition to your machine
I have a project coming up that I plan to use it on. Thanks for stopping by.
A 5C collet chuck is a very nice addition to the lathe - I have both a 5C and an ER40 for my lathe - they each have their benefits. The 5C is better for anything you are making multiples of because of that back stop feature, and work very well for holding standard stock, I think you'll get great use out of it.
I will still get the ER40 chuck for the lathe now that I have the 5C up and running. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hi Steve, informative video for sure. I am a retired machinist, and still have a fairly nice shop (IMHO) I was taught this over half a century ago, and agree that not many are aware of it. The only caveat for this is how the dials are made on your your specific machine. Mine for example is a 1960's vintage, Kerry, from Britain. The cross feed dial is substantially larger than the compound dial, and much better to read, not to mention adjustable. I find that this affords as good or better accuracy than setting the compound for me.
This video went viral because my first title was "What machinists don't want you to know" I go so many negative comments telling me that I didn't know what I was doing that I changed the title. I was very stressful, so I changed the title. Thank you for watching and your kind comments.
@@sharkrivermachine I really don't understand the haters on here? I wouldn't let them get to you, most probably wouldn't know which side of a lathe to stand on? Never mind understanding the math required to afford improved accuracy to dimensional tolerances beyond their comprehension? BTW, this comment will probably fire them up as well.........
Drill disc Is dangerous 😮
I am not thrilled with it either but it is an industry accepted process and I have been grinding for over 50 years.
Your hospital story sounds a bit like my trouble with infections three times in hospital fora week or so for three months finnally the infections got stronger then the iv antibiotics so they operated and removed the problem.
It was an interesting time for sure. Been just short of a year and no more issues. Thank you for watching and commenting.
I also just came over after seeing you on Pete, glad I did.
Thank you for stopping by.
Mr Pete brought me here also. Looking forward for more interesting projects.
Thank you, working on some videos now. Will explain my absence in the next one.
Hello, I just found you thanks to Mr Pete. i do some videos just for a hobby, cant wait to look yours over, have a great day.
Awesome! Thank you!
Hi from Mr Pete's channel. Wouldn't it have been a lot faster and stronger just turning a new handle? Thread both ends and out the plastic knob on the new handle. Throw the broken handle in the scraps bin for later.
I thought about that also. The customer has two of these log splitters in the family and they wanted them to be the same. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@sharkrivermachine I get it. You're welcome. Have a good one!
Hi Steve I like your video. I bought a used 97-8 Starrett Level EDP No.50435 and I notice the bubble is so wide when level I can't see the ends of the bubble. Is that normal or defective? Is is possible to take some of the fluid out or is that a bad idea ? Any advise is appreciated. Thanks in Advance.
The vile needs to be replaced. There are several videos on YT about how to do it. They are available and not too difficult. Keith Rucker of Vintage Machinery has a video on it, czcams.com/video/_fs-AVB3fDg/video.html Thanks for watching and commenting.
Sir you should do the dresser first
Always, I may have missed saying that but I always do. Have been grinding for over 50 years.
Thanks very well explained!
Thanks for watching and commenting.
So, use a 4" torpedo level with a .250 accuracy to verify a macinist level with a .005 accuracy 😂 keep to wood working dad!
Hardly. don't know how you came up with that idea. The point is that you do not need a precision level surface to calibrate a precision level.
2:46 hahaha 1mm cut. XD that's .040" so everyone who machines in metric just went wide eyed at that proposed cut depth.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@sharkrivermachine thanks for the interesting video. 😁
Glad to see you back at it. Insulating the garage door is a great idea. I added 2" foam sheets to my door, it made a major difference.
It is good to be back. Should be posting again in the next week of so. I have been out of state at train shows for a few weeks.
Is the rod + other pieces used here to hold the wheel across the balancer coming from inside the surface grinding machine? Im almost ready to baiance but dont have a way to hold the wheel across the balancer like that.
The shaft or arbor that the wheel is mounted on is a separate part that I machined specifically for balancing the wheel assembly. Here is a link to the video. the threads that I cut on the arbor ended up not being necessary as the wheel hub fit on the taper tight enough that the nut was not needed. czcams.com/video/NWrYen7b19Q/video.html
Thanks Steve. Useful for me. Cheers
