I am an HVAC/R journeyman technician in the Phoenix, AZ area. This area is infested with HVAC hacks, especially in the residential HVAC side of the business.
Over the past 20 years of being in this area I have collected many pictures and videos of the hackfest problem in our area which I have shared on youtube.
Most of my new videos will be "how to's" or otherwise show n tell with the occasional findings of some hackery.
I am also a "Geek" who's assorted hobbies include DIY automotive and electronics which will be featured here as well from time to time.

Time to charge up the daughters car A/C for the hot AZ summer! [2017 Ford Focus]
The daughter's 2017 Ford Focus needed a shot of refrigerant. Took about 11 ounces or so. Total system holds 24 ounces.
She might have a leak developing. So hopefully it doesn't get any worse.
NOTICE: This is a show-n-tell video. I may discuss some tips in this video targetted towards my HVAC peers, but this isn't intended as a full "how to" video. (Sad that I have to say this, but I sure do get some angry comments for not showing every detail of a process I never claimed to be sharing)

3018 PRO CNC fried controller 🔥💥Also did a Brush-less Spindle Upgrade and rewired my laptop & PC
zhlédnutí 182Před 14 dny
This all started when I swapped out my small monitor at my CNC with an old 32" monitor (TV). When I turned the power back on my Spindle started on it's own and when I cycled the power to the CNC 3018 Pro controller it was then DEAD! So at that point I ordered a new controller and decided to separate the CNC controller and monitor from my shared laptop dock in my electronics cave and run the CNC...

I had the old high wall in my shed that I used to have hacked with an interface to connect to a Friedrich VRP. I dug it out and made sure it was back to OEM wiring and working to add to my 3 port ductless ODU Heat Pump. Since I had the ductless service tool, I was able to power it up and test it before even installing it 👍

Continuing to figure out my 3018 CNC PCB Board Milling woes [Spindle Motor Upgrades]
zhlédnutí 198Před měsícem
I bought a spindle "upgrade" for the 3018 CNC however what seemed promising at first also provided some random results. It seems that these brush style motors just like to get noisy and cause some extra bit run-out, causing the PCB isolation routing to cut too wide when it happens. These motors are likely totally fine for cutting wood and plastic and basic CNC tasks except when it comes to PCB ...

So I fixed it today and then later checked my security camera up there to find out what happened to him! Diagnosing & fixing 3018 CNC cutting bit run-out - Part 1 motor replacement

I was getting some inconsistencies with my inexpensive 3018 CNC machine. When a CNC job would eat away too much copper PCB isolation routing I would just figure I made a mistake in the Flatcam software (or probing) and try again. However I did some tests and some repeat cuts with the same program and found the cuts to be inconsistent. During this I observed the motor would get more harsh at tim...

Very nice video shows alot and very nice from you telling all about this.. ..my question is and I hope you can help me out why my durango blows hot in front and cool an the back.. I'm already check and replace the air door actuator but still same
why not fix the leak it should not need Freon every year:)
Very informative! Great job on your conversion!
Ethanol needs a 33% slew in Air-fuel ratio, and the EPA only allows 15% slew for various reasons. A non-flex fuel vehicle will never achieve closed loop on ethanol without modification. And ethanol trashes the engine oil with nasty contaminants.
That's a lot of wasted space on the rooftops of VAI that could have accommodated a lot of people...
Love you didn't edit anything
Excellent video.
hi, do have a klutch kit installed? , do you have belt issues with the bigger tires? the power loss is signifivant?
No. All stock. Even with all the added weight it will just spin the tires if I put it in sport mode. Doesn't bog at all. Still on original belt. Also, 32" is an option on Can Am's. It was almost like it should have had 32" tires. I might go to 35's next time since I mostly do trails and climb stuff.
Have you ever used, electronics spray cleaner to charge the AC in a vehicle??
No. Never heard of that either. Although various chemicals used as propellants are refrigerants. But the OTHER ingredients might not be so great for the closed AC system
I don't know what it is, but I've had SO MANY of the Paragon 8145 series die on my over the last 4 years. They used to last decades, but I've been going back lately and replacing ones that say like 2019, and 2020 on them. One freezer, the plastic arm broke off so it was keeping the defrost heaters energized all the time! Luckily, this was a blast freezer so the condensing unit was trying to keep up, but the restaurant called me because the freezer was only maintaining like +10 degrees and it should have been -10 to -15. All the other failures have been the damn timer motor just gets noisy then stops working. Usually, when it goes into defrost for a final time and then the motor dies, and it never comes out of defrost. 1 or 2 of them, it got weak and jammed up against the pin, and never could get it to cam over into defrost, those are always the fun ones, that turn the evap into a giant ice ball. What I usually do with those those though is just manually turn it into defrost. And then make a run to the supply house to get a new timer, and by the time I get back the ice monster is usually melted enough I can get the rest with a hose and hot water. I might start using those Grasslin's, I've only had to replace like maybe less than 5 of those over the last 6 years. One was like the original on a Trenton freezer condensing unit from back when the building was an old Pizza Hut from the early 2000's. 15 year old Grasslin! I've just been lazy, it's too easy with the Paragon to just go buy whatever voltage (120 or 208/240) guts you need and it's literally one screw and a couple of studs and pop the old Paragon guts out and swap it. I think however after all these time clock failures it's time to move on from Paragon. Yet another USA company that's cutting costs and making junk these days.
Question: if you wanted to “turn off” the fire shutdown duct sensors during an event that uses fog, can you switch the input to “none” to prevent shutdown during sensor detection?
ive topped off so many auto ac its a dirty habbit
the condenser is dirty

You need to change the schrader valves. They always leak.
No signs of oil on the caps but i do make sure there are good seals in the caps.

So glad I’m in San Francisco 69°F weather with the high temperature today at 73°F I would die in Arizona or Utah .
The Billboard is 100% coming down. I talked to the steel workers that were assembling the coasters, that are now working on the administrative/corporate building on the other side of 95th avenue. The only reason they havent completed the coaster is because they are waiting for the city of Glendale to tear down the billboard.
Waiting for the city to get something done? Oh man. That might certainly cause some delay 😑

Hello I’m switching out those same mounts on a 2017 and the driver side and the new mount seems to have more movement than the old one, im not sure what to do at this point? Put the old one back on or just go ahead and change it?
There should be some flex. It allows the engine vibrations to not translate to the vehicle frame so much. The issue with mounts is they dry, rot, break etc. It would be unlikely for the new ones to be worse.
Plz show how exactly u soldered the mech switches.
I did this years ago. I may eventually do some more repairs if I get some that need repair.
OH FUCK NO THATS THE EXACT SAME WASP THAT WAS TRYNA FOLLOW ME WHEN I WAS IN THE LIVINGROOM THIS BITCH IS TERRIFYING
It would help those of us who have never done a project like this to actually SEE you remove the various parts, such as the lower cover and airbag module, in order to get to the blower motor. You ASSUME that we know how to do these things and many of us don't. I had to go to another, more well-made video in order to do the job correctly.
This was just a show n tell (to my HVAC peers) of issues on my daughter's car. I'm a commercial HVAC tech that sometimes posts some show-n-tell of car repairs for family and friends. As I say IN THE VIDEO I decided to record this clip after the fact. Doesn't say "how to" in the description. I am just discussing the motor problem and mentioned all the various odd screw sizes to remove the panels. BTW, it is 110+ deg IN THE SHADE in my area in the summer afternoon. I was fixing my daughter's car and decided to do a show n tell of the motor. The other stuff wasn't rocket science. Just start taking it apart. 👍
I don't go to doctors for hvac info and I don't go to hvac techs for their dumbass conspiracy opinions
Did you get PO299 code?
So the letter DCV that they translated to DC volt is actually meant Demand Control Ventilation according to the manual
Holy crap another crazy person like me! Question for ya, Wouldn't happen to know of a VFD I can strictly run off of the DC bus would you? I have a crap ton of 500v dc caps itching to take my ac off grid. I converted a apartment fridge over to 12/24v with a Danfoss and now itching to do more. A solar VFD would be amazing for just about anything!
Is the clearance recommended by the manufacturer being followed? That's where I'd make my decision. I think he has enough clearance above, he's more than 3 feet.
Last I checked top clearance was 4ft
Battery health can be monitored?
might wanna look up FYSETC E4. More modern drivers, SD card and WiFi support, can run headless.
I already replaced it and it is working. I think I know what happened. So the original was likely not a total POS or anything. Had a 5V interconnected to another power source. Just strange coincidence I guess that it fried as I powered up the outlet strip with the monitor I swapped.
That motor sounds a lot better now. Hopefully it will stay like that.
Oh it is magnitudes quieter. That is for sure. 👍👍
Unless you really need modern features, some of the older (2015-2018ish) ThinkPads are still excellent. Not all, but many, of this era can be easily disassembled for cleaning and upgrades... and they're cheap refurbished.
I finally chucked an OLD ThinkPad. Those things were tanks. You could disassemble the keyboard etc easily. They really were serviceable 👍👍
Only Carrier would sell a $50 assembly of hundreds and hundreds of dollars. One of the tech support guys at a local distributor and I got into some casual conversation about Carrier one day. Turns out he was a service manager for Carrier once upon a time. He was pulled into a meeting about profit margins and other corporate bullshit. Carrier proceeded to brag about their record low failure rate and record high profits on aftermarket parts. He questioned the model in the meeting and was instantly shut down because he didn’t “understand business.” He replied “oh I understand business. I also understand r**e and sodomy too.” Needless to say, he doesn’t work for Carrier anymore. This dude remembers Carrier Multi-Zones. I had the pleasure of working on one of those abominations once. It’s literally why we hit it off and he went off on that tangent. Carrier is a piece of shit company and I’ll gladly take a Goodman before I ever take a Carrier ever again. 🤷♂️

Hi it’s giving me an alarm 2021 after I changed parameters, any idea what that might be
Page 364 library.e.abb.com/public/89576da7c650458f843af9f1b7bfea54/EN_ACS320_drives_UM_F_A4_screenresolution.pdf Seems that you either are missing the jumper from 24V to DI 4 or you didn't get all the parameters set. Should be a few pink wires jumped and the blue wire jumped. I am not at the diagrams to see which ones. But diagram should be in your unit. Also if you change from a ACS320 drive to a ACH550 or vice versa, the wires are landed on different terminal numbers. So keep that in mind when getting substitute drives.
If anything is causing recirculation its the walls, but i never had an issue as long as there is any opening up top for the rising hot air to escape.
Where can I find that tester? HVAC contractor.
Carrier parts distributor in your region should be able to order them.

Well, I scrapped that fan. But I did keep one in tact
What is your opinion on the garbage Midea made shit?
They are one of the larger companies from what I understand. Like most ductless, I see some run 10 years straight with nothing but filter washings and then you find some that just fry boards within months. Ductless, like VRF, don't take too kindly to any debris etc. No filter driers in them. Just a few strainers that catch larger objects. So they need clean welding (if there is any welding done) and a good evac.
spindle looks kinda small
The unit was just a 12,000 BTU unit.
oh not to big a fan then engineers like to undersize things so they fail@@hackfreehvac
@@royamberg9177 Seems to be par for the course. Some manufacturers spec their supply fan motors at the 1.15 SF 💥💥
This looks just like a large PC fan. TBH these motorized impellers were originally designed for the IT industry for cooling high power density electronics but I suppose they have found their uses in HVAC recently. They're supposed to be the most efficient type of fan blade, even more so than forward curved squirrel cage blowers, but I've always found that they rotate too quickly for there to be a noise advantage in all cases.
This style of fan is found in commercial HVAC all the way up to those HUGE box car units. Sometimes having an array of the fans. The reverse incline blades are steel that is all welded together at that caliber, however. There were some huge units I was working on almost 10 years ago that were configured wrong by controls and the unit was producing something like 6" of static! It was popping the unit apart at the seems! Here's some medium sized ones (VFD + AC motor reverse incline blades) ---> czcams.com/video/Lt0v6wUrhsg/video.htmlsi=CLfpnL5E0Ydp7XvJ&t=195 Here is an AAON unit that uses them but these are VFD AC motors czcams.com/video/oCcBD40nCuM/video.html Somewhere I have a video of those large ones. They had like 20 or 30 HP motors if I am not mistaken.
@@hackfreehvac I remember that video where you showed the large fans producing 6" of static. They are quite elegant beasts!
Did you just use impeller in a sentence about airflow? 🤣
@@jman0870 Nothing wrong with that, according to Wikipedia, "driven rotor used to increase the pressure and flow of a fluid". Air or any other liquid can be a fluid.

hi i did not know there was a too for checking the communication on mini splits and do they all use the same communication?
No. This one is Carrier which is Media. Media does make a lot of the units but I am not sure which. I installed some ductless on my aunt's home earlier this year and tried it but it was not compatible on that one (sold at Home Depot). But for Carrier and possibly other Media made ductless, this is the tool!
I’ve been waiting since 2022 and still not open yet
Looks like it will be a while still. Maybe by 2025 if we are lucky
Some people think MAV will open by the end of the year but the resort won't open until late 2025.
I love your knowledge on being able to build these. It would be cool to see how a regular mini split can run on solar. There are mini split kits sold that are required to run off the grid and solar, using an isolator switch. But, they are off brand.
Yeah there are some that are made to connect to 120VAC and a DC supply from solar (48V usually). I know someone who had one. I was told to check HotSpotEnergy.com for those. The issue with standard ductless is they use communication during the zero cross of the AC power. But I imagine if you hacked some connections to the DC CAPACITOR BUS on the board and the solar fed just a little higher voltage, it would maybe work. But not sure. I was staring at schematics a while back and there was a current sensor on the input side that might cause it to freak if the current dropped there.
Random question, were you able to read data tags on RTUs with the other one?
The other drone? If I got close enough. I have not tested that with the new one. But this camera is supposed to be better. So I'll find out later when I fly more. If you are speaking of needing to read unit tags, say you were doing it for BUSINESS and felt comfortable flying closer to roof level, yeah you certainly can read unit tags with the DJI Mini drone. It would be a great took for sales man to send the drone up if you just needed to collect some tag info, unit configuration or gross measurement approximations. For my use I try to fly from a safer distance and zoom in👍
I just did this today. I isolated the coils purged the oil and flushed with Rx11 them then I heated up and blew them out with nitro. I replaced the compressor and charged it with R417c (hot-shot2) after a deep vacuum.
Did you get normal pressures and splits afterwards? So far this worked each time I attempted it.
