Colganology
United Kingdom
Registrace 9. 08. 2006
A magazine channel by Stevyn Colgan - writer, artist, folklorist, former Museum of Curiosity and QI 'Elf', proud Cornishman and member of the Eccentric Club of Great Britain (est. 1781). You can expect arts projects, weird creations, wanderings through the British countryside, folk culture and quite a lot of country lore and foraging thrown in. Oh, and occsional interruptions from Harris the Pug. There's nothing nasty here. Let's make the internet nice - and a little bit silly - again.
Miscellaneous Meander #59
Another week of dog walks on the Chiltern Hills with me, Harris the Pug and guest dog Alfie the Dachshund.
Not a massive amount of new things to report - spring is starting to slowly morph into summer, the bluebells are giving way to foxgloves, buttercups and cow parsley and the early brimstone and peacock butterflies are being joined by whites, red admirals, small meadow blues and orange tips. Soon we'll hear the fizzing of grasshoppers and crickets.
The dual camera app I'm using for my iPhone is called Røde Capture and it's free!
As always, more content on my blog: colganology2.blogspot.com/

Well, this was a treat. In fact, it was a double treat! My podcasting colleague Paul Waters and I hosted a live WE'D LIKE A WORD event this week. Our guest was poet, author, musician, artist, comedian and national treasure JOHN HEGLEY, ably accomanied by poet and musician Clare Elstow. The podcast will be available to download and listen to very soon. It was a fantastic evening. The venue was p...
A Different Kind of Bird Scarer

Yes! I'm back making hideous noises in the name of some kind of art. Today I'm turning a hard hat into a bird scarer for farmers (or for people who think birds are dicks). Enjoy. (No birds were harmed - or scared - in the making of this video.) Check out more of my 'musical' instruments here: The Horn of Geddon: czcams.com/video/GJk2JvHTcz4/video.html The Didgeridon't: czcams.com/video/NzWjCkgG...

This episode features the return of Alfie the Dachshund. It also features me sitting for a photoshoot with acclaimed fashion photographer Andrew Edgecumbe. Eh? I am to fashion what lobsters are to poetry. But Andrew insisted. It turns out that he's photographing creative people for a personal project. So that's okay then. The late afternoon shoot took place near a lake belonging to a country ho...

Viewer discretion advised - This episode has a couple of dead animals in it. Nature is cruel sometimes. Sorry. Another week of walks on the Chiltern Hills with me and Harris the Pug. Expect red kites and tractors, wild garlic buds and wild cherries, bluebells that aren't blue and the surprising return of 'What's that Leaf?' Also featuring a video clip by Paul Dinning - check out the whole video...

Welcome to a week of interesting things that includes Morris Dancing, folk costumes, and meeting one of my heroes - the artist ROGER DEAN. It all began at dawn on May Day when I utterly failed to record the Whitchurch Morris team dancing in the summer. I then spent the evening at a Beltane celebration with a local pagan group of witches, shamans and astrologers. They're a lovely crowd - a lot l...

Some more rubbish art. Literally. Last year I had an offer to put some work on display at The Watermen's Gallery, which is on the quayside in Falmouth, Cornwall (do check out owner Sophi's amazing landscape paintings - see link below). So, with it being a harbour town, I went for a sea theme and made two seahorses. Oh, and then I was ispired to make a blue(tooth) whale. I made some phoney owls ...

This episode is cheesy. That's because I make home-made cream cheese flavoured with wild garlic and using just yoghurt and a bit of salt. It's very tasty. There's also the usual dog walking and foraging shenanigans and an unexpected (and probably unwanted) romantic interlude involving consenting adult beetles. More content, as always, on my blog here: colganology2.blogspot.com/ Instagram, Faceb...

Bluebells, tractors, red kites and non-binary trees - join me once again on another saunter around the part of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that's a few minutes walk from my house. Oh, and there are some wild edibles as usual. And some wild inedibles. More content on my blog here: colganology2.blogspot.com/ And you can find me on Facebook and Instagram as @stevyncolgan
The Hornyx

Following in the appalling wake of my previous 'musical' instrument builds - the HORN OF GEDDON, the DIDGERIDON'T and the EYE-LO-PHONE - may I now present to you ... the HORNYX. It's very loosely based on a tall ancient Celtic battle horn called the Carnyx that my ancestors used to frighten the living daylights out of those pesky Romans, Saxons and Vikings. All I managed to frighten was a squir...

Lots to talk about today ... wildflowers galore, dive-bombing skylarks and peek inside Britain's native flytrap - the Arum lily (aka Cuckoo pint, Lords and Ladies etc.). There's also a short cheeky promo for WE'D LIKE A WORD, a podcast about writing that's co-hosted by myself and m'chum Paul Waters. We've recorded over 60 episodes - mostly in the studio but some at live events - and our guests ...

How do butterflies get from A to B? They weigh next to nothing, their wings have a large surface area and they are at the mercy of the winds. It's a puzzle isn't it? And how do birds' nests stay in a tree during storms? There's no glue involved ... so how? They're just bundles of sticks. This week of rambles ponders several such questions while also pointing out a few wild edibles and further s...
Steam Hansom

A couple of years ago I was leafing through a book of illustrations by the renowned British cartoonist and sculptor, Rowland Emett (1906-1990) when I found a doodle of what seemed to be a steam-driven Hansom Cab; one of those normally horse-drawn carriages that acted like taxis in Victorian London. I loved the look of it so much that I decided to make something very much like it. I've always lo...
Have you tried putting different holes in the tubes like a flute? That way you could get different notes depending in which holes you press. What a crazy flute that would be!
Oddly enough I have just been gifted some leftover some plastic plumbing pipes by a neighbour. I feel an experiement coming on ...
least insane hunting horn player
We were inspired to retrace your steps around Helston. The museum is a real hidden gem. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic! X
We Filipinos would LOVE that for mew year's eve
Thing literally looks like the “I have no mouth but I must scream” cover guy
Why was this kinda relaxing?
This is what the daemons use to lull Azathoth to sleep
I love this so much.
The final trumpet
This looks like an instrument that a Whimsy children's book character would have. I'm pretty sure that's what Oompa Loompas use to call for dinnertime
It summons devils.
that thing looks terrifying.
I love what you do dawg, it also inspires me to make my own weird instruments! Keep up with the instrument videos!
You are my new idol
the thumbnail looks like the horn is cgi and really out if place
I’ll take 4 please
Can these be combined with a bong?
I sort of expected it to be like an Aztec death whistle. Almost as dreadfull. But slightly less death. Good of you to get the vision and make it so. Now perhaps try a thousand nails on the world's biggest chalkboard. Cheers🍻
Is it for sale?
That thing triggers my trypophobia. Absolutely hate it. Great craftsmanship tho👍
This channel is amazing
Love the fact that you where board enough to do it, happy for ya my guy😊
Aztec death whistle.
Don't apologize for any of this. You really need more subscribers, this brought me so much joy. And it clearly brings you joy.
Thank you. :) I'm not chasing numbers - just having fun and sharing the joy. There's something REALLY bonkers coming soon ... :D
Nice build. In Dutch the name "hornyx" would suggest a double meaning, sounding like "hoor niks" wich means "hear nothing".
You know what contributing a novel thing to a field of study is called? Getting a Doctorate. You’ve just skipped ten years of schooling, short getting anyone to take you seriously anyways.
glad to see the internet is alive and well
But why..?
biblically accurate brass instrument
I just discovered and watched all your strange messed up instrument videos, I love these things so much
My friend thinks you’re hot, are you single?
It’s called “the horn of geddon” and it looks like a microscopic Covid spore thingy. 👀 Great work though. Truly a beautiful instrument with great power to annoy. ❤
Sounds better than 98% of pop music today.
The man of leisure Oriental Smoking cap goes with it perfectly. This is an a+. Well done. It looks like a professionally made prop from a sci fi movie. Wonder what it would look like with gold leaf or brass metalic paint. Awesome idea.
My nephews need one of these.
goblin instruments
the meat horn XD
I imagined an arrangement of all sorts of air activated hunting callers (specifically ones that imitate mating calls), call it the Universal Hornyx? >:}
Was it Geddon's Horn.. Or was it the Armour.
this is something straight out of Elden Ring
The most incredibly melodic and serene instrument I’ve ever listened to.😂
blud just turned covid into an instrument
A beauty of its own creation! <3
This looks like some sort of ancient calling horn for some ancient being set to reset or end the world depending on who blows it.
Reminds me of the center of the planet, in Treasure Planet
SpongeBob stinky sound
This should become a Team Fortress 2 item
More instruments?!?! YEES
Did your house fall down afterwards?
"The Horn of Geddon... shall sound in the Deep... ONE... LAST... TIME!"
