As an older player 55+ with fingers that are just not so nimble, leaving the right and left ring finger holes plugged works well for me. I cannot find a pre-professional c foot closed hole with ordering one from Japan or London so I make do.

Reichert are the best... on a good day when I have time I'll play through all of the exercises. Good for piccolo as well...

Thanks for the video. The term isn’t walled but should be wall. A heavy or thin wall headjoint. Gold should also give a flute more body to the sound. I don’t think you’re going to get much difference in a gold lip plate. By examining the way sound is produced at the strike edge gold may not really make much difference. It’s hard to tell much difference in a video. I’ve had a gold embouchure plate applied and the tone wasn’t much different as I was hoping. Yes the riser would make more difference as opposed to the lip plate. A player should weigh the benefits carefully on parts because of huge price.

Next time it might be a good idea to play them first without disclosing anything about the maker or the materials. The. blindfold test precludes any assumptions and biases. That being said I think you clearly sounded best on the second Song headjoint. Your sound and articulation was most reliable on it, and it was nice. strong sound.

Yeow. I am a classically-trained flutist but I decided not to pursue a professional career. In 1974 (on the recommendation of my teacher at college) I upgraded from my student model to a slightly-used 1970 Armstrong Heritage C-foot, at the time a top-of-the-line instrument, for all of $550. It has some tuning quirks, but I know them so well after all these years that I automatically adjust on those notes. It's a thin-walled model and was pronounced "a real honker" by my repair technician (also a flutist). It's certainly a very good instrument for an amateur like me, and hopefully I won't ever have to replace it and suffer the sticker shock of today's prices!

Hello ,can you help me,sometimes i feel that my embouchure and also my flute become easy in position and very unstable, lost. Even if I support it with my body. And if I want to sing a scale, the sound is very lost, very 'dull'. What could I do?And also has no weight when is happens

That was amazing. First, let me say i was intrigued that you even made this video...not the usual fodder for "learn to play the flute videos". So...years ago I had a Haynes, drawn, custom head joint. A big bright sound. One day someone gave me this old unplayable flute they had lying around that they didnt want. It is a Sealos, hand built, soldered.. I was intrigued by the low serial number, 118, and the fact that it wasn't built in a factory. I think my Haynes was number 37 thousand and something, or was it 137 thousand? I had the Sealos re-padded, started playing it..and wow. WOW! I sold that Haynes and forgot about it...until now. I had never thought about this until I heard you play. Bright vs Dark tone...maybe the flute you choose reflects your spirit...Love my dark Sealos flute!

I recently upgraded from my Azumi AZ3 to the Miyazawa 602 which is 958 silver with plated keys, and I chose a 14k riser and it is magnificent. The denser silver gives a rich warm sound and the gold riser makes the articulation so crisp and defined.

Thanks for sharing. In my dreams, I would have an instrument to match either of those. I'm liking the tone of the gold. I had an old Haynes ripped off and I'm shopping. I'm a novice, so no I don't NEED the gold. If I can't find anything local I like here in San Diego, I'll look towards the NY vendor you mentioned. Both are beautiful. I probably would never leave the house if I mortgaged the house and grabbed the gold.

I am a complete novice. I bought a Tocco Plus composite flute which is very lightweight. I have been struggling getting the balance. Thank you for your explanation of this.

THANKKK YOUUU I tried as my band teacher told me to work on my tone as it sounds airy and because of this i sound better and my higher octave doesn't sound too forced however I do still hear a bit of airyness but ill figure it out

Yey! I've been trying to work hard on double tonguing recently and came to all those exact same conclusions through experimentation, so it's great to hear someone else articulating it in a slightly different way. I had a chuckle at the chicken pecking description - yup! I get it! I do find it so hard not to default back to old ways even after discovering better ways of doing things.

Wonderful explanation as usual! Sometimes, the "bad sound" comes also from the lack of synchronisation with fingers... For me this is almost the most difficult part. What would you advise to train efficiently on tonguing/fingers synchronisation?

Have you ever seen that Gary Larson cartoon where the guy is yelling at his dog, "Bad dog Ginger! Bad dog Ginger"! And what the dog hears is "Blah blah Ginger! Blah blah Ginger!"? That was me when my teacher used to say that word "embouchure". Maybe I was so happy just to be hitting the note, and I didn't want to jinx it by talking about it. Go figure...Watching your video I am reminded to get out my tuner and practice long tones. And to take the time to tell myself to relax...Im really glad that i have finally realized how important embouchure studies are...but that's another story. I would be interested in your making a video on your own practice. For example, if you were going to have a flute work day, what would your schedule be like? Also some details, like what you pay attention to when doing harmonics, intervals, etc. Hooray Faure'! Thank you ~°~

I seem to get a better sound on the right side but it is very tiring to hold my flute the right side. Almost impossible! Your arms also ends up being in an awkward position. So what do you do?

I hope it isn’t too late to comment, but I’ve been trying to learn double tonguing recently. My “da-ga” has been better than my “ta-ka”. I believe it’s for the reason that I can’t get my ka as strong sounding as my ta, and I can’t prevent my embouchure from loosening the higher the notes I play, creating a sloppy noise. This only happens when playing high notes with my ka, not ta. Any suggestions or advice?

I am in highschool and still don't have my scales down.. Better late than never ! I have been doing reichert n1 with metronome to make sure everything is in place. What else should I do ? Do you have any advice ? How should I practice any methods?

Hello, I just discovered your channel. I started playing the the 4th grade but had no private lessons. Our band teacher was a saxophone player and when he played flute he had a very pulled back embouchure. My question is I have very large teeth and a prominent overbite (even with orthodontia work). When I try to create space, it is not a finger width as my teeth are too large. Do you have any advice for opening my sound? I do have an intermediate flute which made a world of difference with the sound, but it doesn't sound as full as I would like. i was in marching band in the late 80's early 90's but haven't played regularly since. I have just recently retired and have picked up practicing my flute. I wasn't a great musician, but could play in a pinch for a church service to accompany the choir but my tone was very thin. I try hard to remember to open up and be relaxed, but sometimes I am very flat tune-wise to the piano or organ (whichever the accompanist is playing for the song).Your videos and advice have helped me greatly now that I am finding time to practice my flute again. But any advice you can give would be appreciated.

Your videos have been so helpful to me various times, the most recent being to blow across the wet. So helpful! I am 76 years old, only taking up the flute 3 1/2 years ago. I love playing this instrument! My background- I am a professional pianist with advanced degrees in piano. I also have classical vocal training. No experience whatsoever with any wind instrument. My flute teacher is good, but sometimes I think that she doesn’t know what to do with me because of my other knowledge and experiences. For now, I consider myself an intermediate in flute playing. Your videos and explanations are so helpful!

I have no idea what you are referring to as "fast air" if not the velocity of flow somewhere in the system, Such as through the lip aperture.
