  • How many of you feel like your third octave just does not have the same kind of resonance and excitement that perhaps your second and your first octave do? Learning how to “spin” your notes is one way to add that excitement to your high notes.
    How do you spin?
    • Start with a loose embouchure
    • Make sure you have support pushing up on your high notes
    • Jiggle that tone
    • Have a cavern inside so that tone can resonate
    This is how your get spin on your third octave notes.

    I have been watching your videos for 3 years and I am still amazed by your ability to find the most suitable words in any circumstances. Even for a "not native" English speaker (excuse my french!), this is so obvious to understand, feel and mimic. At least to me... Lately rediscovering the flute.
    You helped me to fix many issues in my tone (due to bad habits).
    I am myself teaching in sciences at the University and you are thus very inspiring, even in other fields. Thanks for sharing your passion of music and teaching.

    Spin? I need to hit it first ☺. Im at trying to loosen up, I still find the upper range almost impossible BUT I really dont need to play up there so I use it more to improve the middle octave upper range better. Thanks for the video 2x👍

      Ha! Don't tell me you can't hit those high notes? What is happening with your upper register? Does it crack or do the notes just not come out?

    YES!!! That's how it works!! Thank you!! The bit about the stomach punch worked! I've always struggled with my third octave, and the stomach punch is the way to go! I'm so glad! Because I simply couldn't relax my embouchure in the third octave without losing the tone, and now it seems I simply didn't have enough support. Whoppeee.... (Now I need to learn how to use the stomach punch and still play legato... next challenge 👍)

      @@DoctorFlute There is an Etude by Koehler from his easy and melodious exercises (Leichte und melodische Lektionen) Op. 93, the very first one in D major. In bar 13 there is a group of eighths going upwards e-g-b-f# (and then down again e-b-g-e). I could never get that f# before. Now I give just a tiny bit of a stomach punch and it comes out like a bell. Astounding. I like those etudes, they are such pure romantic melodies. 👍

    Any tips on playing 3rd octave high b natural on the flute? Half of the time i play it the note cracks

    • @DoctorFlute
      @DoctorFlute  Před 6 měsíci

      It is a difficult note. The answer is twofold: air pressure and embouchure change. You need to have lots of air pressure and then air needs to be out. Also keep the embouchure as open as possible. That’s what you do but just because it’s easy to write doesn’t make it easy to do!

    My third octave F sharp tends to crack, not D,E or G but F sharp. Is it so or am doing something wrong?

    • @DoctorFlute
      @DoctorFlute  Před rokem +1

      I think this is a common problem. No really easy fix but I would say the best thing is to aim the air down. Aiming the air down makes sense anyway because we can keep the pitch from being too sharp. But the cracking usually occurs because the air is too high.
