  • How is your articulation? Do you feel that your tonguing is precise and clear? Or do you sometimes have articulated notes that are unfocused and airy?
There are differing ideas on tongue placement, and I think they can all be used for various reasons. But I want to discuss the unfocused Tah sound. You know that one especially in the low register where sometimes it’s a puff of air rather than good tone quality.
In this video I discuss the exact position of the tongue necessary for a good clear Tah using embouchure, tongue, and support.

Amazingly, I just discovered the principle you have mentioned here (holding in air) last night as I was playing Semper Fidelis by Sousa. The notes going from high E natural to G natural very quickly were sounding choppy...less air focused the tone.
I'm the flutist who took a 46 year hiatus from playing my flute. I want to thank you for your very practical tips, which have improved my playing to the point that I have been accepted into a Community Wind Symphony! Please keep your videos coming!

Does articulation ever come with breath only? Or is it always through tounging? Thanks for your videos.

I would say 99% of the time it is only with tonguing. However, there are times when I want to come in on a very soft gentle opening note. In this case I might begin with a gentle pah sound with the lips.

Good time of day. I wanted to ask you. For example, I can't get double stacatto D of the second octave, F, F#. My tongue gets confused and the instrument hisses a lot. Thank you. I am from Ukraine and I am 13 years old. :) I'm Diana

The important thing to figure out is are you really tight up there on that F#? Your embouchure needs to be more relaxed and you need to use more pressure from you abdomen. When the abdomen is supporting (by tightening those muscles) then your embouchure can be more relaxed and let out your high register. Try this and let me know if it helps.
