  • Have you ever missed a high note? What I mean is that instead of hitting that 3rd octave like a champ, you cracked! It’s not pretty, but we’ve all done it somewhere in our performances.
    There is a way to prevent that from happening. I’ve learned that I can prevent a 3rd octave catastrophe when I’ve done my prep work ahead of time. It is all about planning first, then practicing your plan.
    You’ve heard the expression “failing to plan, is planning to fail.” In this video I explain how to plan ahead, so that you won’t fail in your 3rd octave.

    Great advice! I draw a circle above those types of notes/passages to remind me to be entirely open and relaxed when I reach for those notes. And you're so right - in my experience no support = shrill (ick)... very sad.

    It always bothers me when composers write up so high for a flute. Do they not understand our instrument?

      Well you know it’s because we can do it that we are made to do it. It’s kind of like why did the person climb the mountain, answer: because it’s there.
