  • How are your quick breaths in the middle of a piece? Do you always take a deep full breath that fills up your support every single time?
    It is difficult to train yourself to take a deep breath in the middle of a piece. We can often take a really good breath at the beginning of the piece, or after a long rest. But it is much harder to take that deep full open throat breath as you are playing. Especially when you are moving really fast, and you have only a split second to take that breath.
    Deep breathing is necessary to create the air pressure that enables you to create a good tone. In this video, I will teach you how to practice taking that type of breath in the middle of a piece so that every single time you need a breath, whether slow or fast, it is always the right breath to help you play well.

    Great video 2x👍
    I was always told to get a good belly of air using the diaphragm to push it out. Running out pf oxygen is my issue, I did circular breathing when I was playing euphonium at 14. But just cant get it right on the flute.

      You really have to learn how to breath properly first. The problem with flute, unlike euphonium, is that there is no built in resistance. Brass instruments have a mouthpiece that resists the air. When we play flute we have to learn how to hold in the air with our stomach and rib muscles. In this way you can eventually learn to not use up all your air. Does that make sense?

    Thank you! I struggle with this and take those shallow breaths. I will practice as you suggest.

      You got this! Just work on how to make those breaths deep and fast. We think they can’t be both but they can!

      Do you have breathing issues in general? You should watch some of my videos on support because I teach breathing. It might answer your questions.

    Good morning Doctor, I have a question 😑 I’m saving up to purchase my first flute but while I’m waiting for the day to get it should I practice techniques with other woodwinds instruments, breathing and tonguing exercises?

    • @DoctorFlute
      @DoctorFlute  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I really don’t think playing other instruments will help you at all with flute. What it would do for you is train your ear and teach you to read music. That would speed up the process. But, nothing helps you learn to play the flute like flute playing. I wish you a speedy journey to that first flute!

      Your first flute should be a beginner flute so don't save up too much up. Trevor James 5XE, or a Yamaha 200 series, brand new, don't go higher than that. Lots of reasons, trust me on this one. Consider even a plastic flute like the Nuvo2 as they keep their usefulness long after switching to a better flute. I confirm what Angela said, no other instrument can help, in fact they might teach you bad habits. I had both a suite of recorders and a peruvian flute (a Quena, end blown) which self-thought me to push air badly and messed up my embouchure for many months. Everything apart from the fingers and music reading was a complete mess. What's strange is that after undoing all that, when I went back to those instruments I found them way easier to play in a relaxed manner.
