The Scottish Highlands Following a 1918 Guidebook
I went on a trip around Scotland, following a 1917/18 Travel journal.
In this video I travel the Highlands making use of a travel journal guidebook from 1918. The little red travel journal in question is The Highlands by Wardlock & Co.
Part of a series of travel journals covering the UK and many other parts of the world.
My trip takes me from the central belt to such wonderful places such as; Doune, Scone, Inverness, Ullapool, Wester Ross then over the sea to Skye. Visiting Kyleakin, Dunvegan and The Old Man of Storr. Until finally I turn homeward, staying in Fort William under the shadow of Scotland's tallest mountain, Ben Nevis. The video features wonderful windy wanderings through stunning Scottish Highland locations as I attempted to unravel the history of tourism in Scotland.
For this trip I, of course, needed an appropriate outfit consisting of a split skirt and sailor collared blouse! The making of which was shown in part 1 which can be found on my channel!

I just picked up a Franklin Rotory / knee pedal in a parlor stand with turned lgs braced with )( shaped supports topped with a phinial. A brass plate stamped 23×7501 underneath the motor. I wonder if it's an older cabinet and a 1930s machine or an older machine with a newer motor?

Nice! When I wanted a kilt I found a light weight (wool) kilt in an 'op-shop' & soon realised it had been made to fit a woman (it was made as a kilt in the style for a man) so I totally undid it, washed, ironed & remade it. Thankfully the pleats weren't too deep so material had not been cut away inside the pleats near the top & so I was able to change the pleats from four to five per pattern (about 5" across from memory) which worked better, changed the straps to something more solid etc & it worked out well. All was hand sewn. I basically looked & learned as I undid it plus I had a little guidance from a couple of kilt makers as well, though most I was taking note of construction as I "deconstructed" it. Having seen newly made kilts with tacking stiches still in them I also learnt how that was needed during construction too. That was a tartan that wasn't related to my family, so I discovered a pipe band that wore the tartan I desired (albeit in a large set) & was able to buy a couple of their used kilts. One was from a large person & so I undid it all, washed & ironed it again (very carefully). It was medium weight material & so to make it look like new & not faded I reversed the material (shock horror, but it worked), cut off the front apron, plus a bit more, to reverse & join within a pleat. Being extra large I was able to cut away the top 2-3 inches of the trimmed internal pleats, but still worked with what was cut out to line up with the new pleats even with the reversed material. I bought a strap set for this kilt & it became my regular kilt at Scottish Country Dance socials & also Scottish Fiddling. Yes a purist might detect the reverse slope of the twill weave, but it has served me well & looked good. My fingers were thankful it was completed after all that hand sewing too.

You can sew fabrics as heavy as denims and corduroy and also shear fabrics. It's an excellent and versatile machine. You'll get the hang of it and be able to use it on most anything you want to sew.

In New Zealand kilts are a common part of winter school uniforms for girls. I always hated mine, but after listening to you I know it was one of those rip offs you described. In Australia similarly patterned fabric is also common in school skirts, although kilts are much less common. I much preferred the uniform I had there. The kilt you made is beautiful! I imagine it would be like wearing a lovely warm blanket!!! And a late congratulations on becoming a kilt-maker 💕 Is there anywhere you’d recommend learning about tartan fabrics? I have some Scottish ancestry but felt unsure about interacting with Scottish culture because in my family it wasn’t passed down much. Your kind words make me feel like it’s okay to learn

I love your kilt making and I love the care that goes into the kilts you make. I am on a serious weight loss journey and my prize will be a hand sewn traditional kilt. That said, the poly viscose kilt has it's place. Here in Texas it's over 100 degrees in the summer. You need a washable kilt if you are going to wear it a lot. My poly kilt doesn't hang the best but it wears well in this environment.

Ahhh, threading it backwards!!! Right to left! Glad you figured that out quickly. 😂 Also the curve of the needle plate matches the curve of the needle where it’s inserted. Helps to keep that straight. And I have to differ that you think it’s not for delicate fabrics - that is one of the main things it’s known for. It was called the “dressmakers machine” for a reason, not that it won’t power through heavy duty fabric, too, but the 15 was called the farmer’s machine because it handles heavier fabrics like canvas just a tad better (allegedly). Nothing beats a treadle for punching power over electric though, IMO. And no, while it may sew leather, you need an industrial for that if you’re going to be sewing bags, etc. and not an occasional leather item. This was an awesome gift! I got one free, too, but it was rusty and required hours of restoration before she’d sew.

Did you ever get to sew on this machine? It is meant for delicate fabrics, it sews thin cotton, silk and even sheer chiffon. This is an exceptionally smooth running model, only the motor makes a bit of noise. You have to get the right needle and thread for finer fabrics of course. The main problem with these are mostly cleaning and oiling. The first cleaning can be a bit of a challenge, you have to take out the bobbin case (or basket if you will), often scrape out felted dust under there. Use a wooden tooth pick or something like that. There is a lot of oil points you need to address, and you likely have to go over the machine two or three times with a bit of test sewing in between. The bobbin plate needs to come off completely to get the bobbin case out. The side plate comes off too. There are oil points on top as well as all the joints and hinges under the base. I promise, it is a fine tuned machine, very capable of sewing delicate fabrics. There were lots of attachments for these, but I can mostly recommend the buttonholers. There were cast aluminium version of the 201 or 201K23, it is more portable and easier to carry.

No need to go to the gym to build muscles after lifting one of those machines!! I just finished making a quilt on a 66 model which is similar in size to the 201, but with separate motor. It is SO quiet when it's running compared to the modern plastic machines, and all the attachments/feet make it do almost anything they can do.

Found one of these beauties and trying to win an auction to buy it. Fngers crossed. This is the machine I learned on and have always wanted one since. The new machines aren't a patch on the Singer 201K. The one I'm after comes in a bentwood case though and that's doubly-attractive to me.
