  • I went on a Highland Trip, following a 1917/18 Travel journal. For this trip I, of course, needed an appropriate outfit. The making of which is shown in this part 1 of 2,
Part 2 here: • The Scottish Highlands...
Part 2 will be a full Highland trip video, the route we took, sights along the way and some classic Scottish nature.
The travel journal in question is The Highlands by Wardlock & Co. Part of a series of travel journals covering the UK and many other parts of the world.
Hope you enjoy the making of a split skirt and sailor collared blouse!

The Keystone and other drafting manuals of the time presume that you already know to use half/quarter of the main measurements. Good on you for persevering. Pattern drafting is a joy when it goes right but a nightmare when it goes wrong.

I think what threw me off is whenever I've used it before the measurements were as stated ( ie 1/4 waist, 1/8 hip etc) but now I know so if I draft the other trousers in it I'll not be as confused!

The 19teens are a fantastic fashion period. Structural draping is delightful

It turned out really nice. I think we're not used to seeing women in baggy skirts/pants. I went to the store and half of the ladies wore skinny jeans that looked two sizes to small. They looked really uncomfortable but I like baggy pants. I like the outfit videos much better than the people who try to make a capsule wardrobe. I just kept thinking I know they already have perfectly good clothes in their closests. It takes time to make a nice garment.

I love this video so much! ❤ I think for the placket/pocket, it should be called a plocket 😂

    "Secret Trousers" works too.
What a wonderful video, thank you and well done. You know, if the Hotel is still in operation... you could reach out to their PR/Communications person/department and do a guided stroll around the facilities. Make another outfit to suit a different season so you can do repeated visits (that you can then partially write off on your taxes as a 'business expense'). In any event, looking forward to part 2.

Secret trousers I think is the way to go haha
I will probably do something like that in a future video (considering an islands trip or something) but this round we just cheekily filmed the outside haha

I think I heard from someone else following an old victorianish drafting manual that there's another paragraph earlier in the book that explains that waist and hip etc should be taken to mean half waist or half hip. but for modern users who flip to the part they want and don't read it all front to back you keep running into the double waist problem.

Strange thing is there isn't one in mine, maybe it was "common knowledge" at the time or a previous publication by the same guy had that guidance, so they didn't think to include it 🤔 The bodice drafting instructions uses the full measurements as well which is strange,it's very wierd that only the trousers & (some of the) skirt is half 😂

Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed watching and listening to you as I did my own hand-sewing, you have quite the calming voice! Would you be able to tell me the brand/ type of the thimble you wear? I've been hunting for a thimble to suit me and I don't think I've seen one quite like yours before.

In the UK pants are underwear, so all pants are secret hahaha

  • @BerkshireBitch

It's pleated, though, so will it really be too big?

    • @LiljaHusmo
      @LiljaHusmo  Před rokem

The crotch seam would have been down at my knees, and the drafting lines weren't matching up as only some of the measurements were off, had they only been too wide that would be fine, but the angles didn't align either😊
