  • An Adventure In Making an 1896 Outfit pt. 3 The Walking Skirt
    You don't have to have seen any other parts to view this one! :)
    In Part 1 I made a pair of Victorian Combinations.
    The Second part was the Victorian Corset!
    This part is the Skirt! I am really happy with how this project is shaping up! The skirt has a really nice shape to it and fits well (once I hook it on) and the fabric is really beautiful.
    With each part of this ensemble, I am getting much more confident with sewing on my antique Singer sewing machine!
    The walking skirt was an almost ubiquitous piece in the Victorian wardrobe. The one I have constructed in this video is a gored skirt, meaning it is fitted and conical in shape. It has a pleated back and a fitted front and sides. The fabric is a Holland & Sherry wool mix (not sponsored (it was a gift)). The blue hounds tooth pattern is really pleasing to the eye.
    I feel as though I have said this in every videos description... but these past few months have been busy as ever! I will be able to share some other things I have been working on in the coming weeks!
    There are also, of course a few more projects lined up in this adventure in making a late 1800s outfit, as well as this Victorian walking skirt there is the Jacket and blouse to come next.
    So if you enjoy historical costume making or costume history, I'd love for you to come along with me on this journey. Who knows what I'll be making once these are completed? (It's me... I know.)
    Also, I have no idea how that dog ended up in Norway with us... I don't remember packing him.

    One of the advantages of being a servant to our guinea pigs is I (mostly) get to choose when they roam about in the kitchen. The cat negotiation ended well... You have a very well trained dog. I could never manage to get my childhood doggo to not run for the hills when off-leash (and he was then as much a klutz as I am now).
    Your productions are always so good. Well done. The skirt is beautiful.

    I really want to make one of these but I've never made any "historical" type of garment and would probably screw it up. I studied and HND in stitched textiles and fashion 25 years ago at Cardonald college in Glasgow, do you know that college at all? My teenage daughter is a cosplayer and I'm her personal dressmaker lol my spare room pretty much constantly looks like if a textile massacre occurred in Mandors 😂 I love the skirt you made, it's beautiful do you get much wear from it? It's so annoying when something is just ever so slightly off size wise

    • @LiljaHusmo
      @LiljaHusmo  Před rokem

      I definitely think a skirt like this would be a great historical project to get into! There's lots of great patterns out there if using a drafting manual is too daunting. Just make sure to double check the waistband after making it up (with any undergarments you are going to be wearing) before stitching the skirt to the waistband, I didn't triple check and it ended up a little small 😂 I still need to add that inch so I can wear it without holding my breath 😭 I'm hoping to get lots of use this winter!
      I think one of my uni classmates went to the Textile HND at Cardonald!
      Your daughter is lucky to have a personal dressmaker!

    Hi there. Thanks for sharing your walking skirt. It looks marvellous and I hope you have some wonderful adventures wearing it. I found a link to you today when I was viewing a turn of the century rural working women’s outfit at a local museum. I wondered how I can get access to the longer video that was mentioned by yourself in the short video clip of the recreated outfit? Thanks 😊
