To the border with Georgia
We headed towards the border crossing at Lake Aktas. We got some fuel and cleaned the truck at a Shell station where the staff was incredibly friendly. We camped at the shore of a small lake close to the border. The next morning we headed there to start our Georgia adventure.

Ani - City of 1,001 Churches
zhlédnutí 54Před 14 hodinami
Our next stop (on our way to the border with Georgia) was Ani. Ani is a ruined medieval Armenian city. Between 961 and 1045 it was the capital of an Armenian kingdom. Ani is a widely recognised cultural, religious and national heritage symbol for Armenians. As it lies very close to the border, you can actually see Armenian border-posts and flags on the other side of the river. We enjoyed stroll...
Ishak Pasha Palace
zhlédnutí 43Před 14 hodinami
On our way to the Palace, we stopped at the waterfall. A place where many locals have their picnic. The Palace is one of the few examples of surviving historical Turkish palaces. It is not that old, having being completed only in 1784. We spent the night parked at the vistor centre opposite and had dinner at the restaurant just above. The next morning we had an extensive “Van” breakfast in town...
Lake Van (2nd camp spot)
zhlédnutí 2Před 19 hodinami
We really liked Lake Van. Monique had another potentially nice camp spot just opposite Carpanak island. There is an abandoned Armenian monastery on the island, but at current waterlevel you cannot reach it by foot. The final few km of the track was “interesting” as the ground next to the track was very soft and it was getting late. Fortunately we could spot the few oncoming cars well ahead. The...
Lake Van (our first campsite)
zhlédnutí 7Před 21 hodinou
Lake Van is the largest lake in Turkey. It is a saline soda lake without an outlet. There is only one type of fish in the lake and according to legend there is a monster that lurks below the surface (like in Loch Ness). We really enjoyed an afternoon with a group of Kurdish friends who invited us over immediately following our arrival. The next day we visited the Armenian church of the Holy Cro...
Nemrut Dagi
zhlédnutí 245Před 21 hodinou
Mount Nemrut is 2130m high. Its summit has a large number of statues erected around what is assumed to be a Royal tomb from the 1st century BCE built by King Antiochus of Commagene. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The route there is beautiful, with blossom just starting on the trees. At the visitor centre they gave us a nice flat camp-spot (we promised to have dinner at the restaurant). Par...
Diyarbakir and Hasankeyf
zhlédnutí 4Před 21 hodinou
We are slowly moving to the east. We visited Diyarbakir first. Unfortunately, the weather was really bad (tipping it down). We thus only visited the old town and the city wall while we stayed on an empty plot in old town. Following we visited Hasankeyf. This town has an incredibly long history. Most of the old town was completely flooded as part of the Ilisu Dam project. Many of the historical ...
Camping at a bank of the Euphrates river with our MAN HX60/Bliss mobil
zhlédnutí 35Před 21 hodinou
As we were driving down the mountain we really liked the scenery. We thus looked for a nice place to camp and enjoy it longer. Monique had this spot at the bank of the Euphrates. The track led us through a few small villages before we got there. A friendly farmer dropped by and offered to help us if we needed anything.
Nemrut Gölü
zhlédnutí 4Před 21 hodinou
The crater of the Nemrut volcano is one of the largest calderas in the world. The western half of the crater is covered by the lake. The flora and fauna are quite unique (and include some brown bears). Clearly, we arrived too early in the season. There was still much snow and the higher route to the rim was blocked, let alone the route into the crater. We were very happy that we did manage it t...
Mardin
zhlédnutí 43Před dnem
Mardin old town has a medieval history and a nice atmosphere. It also offers great vistas over the green plain. We enjoyed wandering around old town. The weather was not always kind. Nonetheless, the simple park-up/campsite at the bottom of old town allowed us to get our laundry done and stock up on water. We met two local students English (Hilal and Hira) who kindly showed us around which was ...
Sanliurfa
zhlédnutí 38Před dnem
We could park the truck right next to the Museum in the centre of Sanliurfa. That allowed us to easily visit the sights, do some shopping and maintenance over the two days that we were there.
Dara Necropolis
zhlédnutí 19Před dnem
We visited Dara, once an important East Roman fortress city in northern Mesopotamia. Today, the most impressive building groups of Dara are the rock-cut tomb groups. The wide hills at the west of the town were used at the beginning of the 6th century as a stone resource for building activities in the city. The flat facades obtained after cutting out the stone were later converted into a necropo...
Three historic sites
zhlédnutí 130Před dnem
We spent a few days visiting ancient sites in this region of Turkey. Karahan Tepe is the sister-site of Göbekli Tepe (which we visited later). It is amazing to see what some believe to be the earliest human village dating to between 9000 - 11000 BCE (older than Göbekli Tepe). Following we visited Sumatar, an ancient watering place with tombs and ruins, and Harran founded 2500 - 2000 BC and whic...
Mor Gabriel Monastery
zhlédnutí 7Před dnem
We entered Turkey at Silopi and headed towards Mardin. Just before reaching Mardin we visited the Mor Gabriel Monastery. It is the oldest surviving Syriac Orthodox monastery in the world. It is located in a beautiful area and we enjoyed the walk around.
The route to Nemrut Dagi
zhlédnutí 16Před dnem
On our way to Nemrut Dagi we passed a number of interesting sites that we visited. We started with an ancient city in the kingdom of Commagene (Perrhe). Following we visited Karakus Tumulus, a funerary monument for Queen Isias and Princess Antiochis of Commagene. We camped at a late Roman bridge. That evening we were invited to come see the Kahta Castle and have some pistachio coffee. The castl...

Is it true they found human remains dating back to 7000 years ago?
