  • The crater of the Nemrut volcano is one of the largest calderas in the world. The western half of the crater is covered by the lake. The flora and fauna are quite unique (and include some brown bears). Clearly, we arrived too early in the season. There was still much snow and the higher route to the rim was blocked, let alone the route into the crater. We were very happy that we did manage it to the rim and could see the lake from there. The weather turned ugly as we were walking and when we got back to the truck we decided to not camp at height but near the village at the edge of Lake Van. We plan to be back in August/September.
