The 2023 Earthquake area, one year later

As we camped near the Titus tunnel, business and restaurant owners told us about the tremendous impact of the 2023 earthquakes. At the coast the impact was less as the mountain range provided some protection. As most of the historical sites in Antakya were destroyed, not many visitors come through anymore. Nonetheless, they advised us to take the route through Antakya as the preferred route back inland. They actually mentioned that one of the musea in town had re-openend (not so). We have never seen so much devastation in our lives and had tears in our eyes as we drove through knowing that tens of thousands of people lost their lives and many were left homeless. In the year past, much has already happened. We saw all the cleared plots, the many temporary housing camps and the many new housing developments taking shape or being completed. It is also obvious that people feel it all takes too long. We wish all the impacted people strength and all the very best in rebuilding their lives.
