How to file IFR flight plan in the air
We have all heard of “pop-up” IFR flight plans, but what happens when ATC is too busy and can’t give you one? You may know How to file an IFR flight plan. However, in this week’s video, I show you How to file an IFR flight plan in the air. I have needed to use this when I was above a scattered cloud layer that had become broken and overcast at my destination. I could have started down early, but I wanted to stay at altitude for as long as I could. ATC was too busy for a pop-up IFR and I had to use this tip to make it to my destination. Also in this Episode, an early mentor of mine is awarded the Charles E. Taylor award from the FAA. -TFS

Great video with IFR procedures. Only tweak I would offer is the music at the takeoff sequence was a bit loud and distracting. Occasionally we hear music for a video intro title sequence, but I feel it doesn't add anything during the body of the video.
@@Brianflys I will keep that in mind. I appreciate the feedback.
Sounds like the stall warning on takeoff. But I know it’s noise from the radio interference on the engine. Lol
Yes sir, I have to get the diodes checked on my alternator. I hope it wasn't too distracting for you. Thanks for coming along! -TFS

Thanks again 👍🏽
You bet! I appreciate you sticking with me.
Very nice video on an important topic. As you mentioned early in the video, one option is to (1) request of Approach/Center a pop-up IFR clearance to destination. Downside of this, especially in busy airspace is the dreaded "unable (I'm too busy)". The option you demonstrate is (2) going off frequency to radio FSS and request for them to prepare and behind-the-scenes file, receive confirmaton from ATC. Downside is the off-frequency time (likely several minutes), which can be quite nerve-wracking, especially in high traffic areas. The option I prefer is demonstrated in the video linked below at 12:02 and is to (3) electronically file an IFR flight plan in-the-air from ForeFlight using my cell phone and then simply request of Approach/Center (at 13:55 in the video below) to pick up that clearance. I've had this work many many times even at 10,000+ AGL... after all, it's effectively a simple text message from ForeFlight to ATC (i.e. bypassing FSS). The upside is zero time off-frequency with Approach/Center. Wayne (DA40 KSBA) Here's the video demonstrating (3)... czcams.com/video/xDb-C5ffICU/video.htmlsi=KNSx0pvkqtlFMbSD&t=722
@@GeezerGeekPilot I will check that out. It’s interesting you have such reliable service. Unless I am right over a major metro area, I cannot send/receive texts. Thanks for coming along. Will you be at Oshkosh?
@@TheFlyingSalesman, let me know how option (3) works for you. I expect ForeFlight tries a number of times to connect and send its short message. I'll not be at Oshkosh (not a fan of crowds 🙂). Keep up the good work on the videos.

Excellent practical videos. Thank you.
Glad you like them! I appreciate you coming along.
I bet you never thought you'd hear this "a little less right rudder". Sorry couldn't help myself. On a serious note file on the ground (ipad) but leave it in filed status, when you hit your area for IFR, pick it up with a current location. Works so much better and way faster since its already holding in the system.
@@Twizlair great tip! I will remember that. The intent of this is for those times when you get caught off guard. I like your plan though, I can see multiple scenarios where it can be used.
@@TheFlyingSalesman 100% agree with intent of this video, and the info to file inflight was 100%, just cumbersome. Keep the greasy side down.
Another excellent video. Good review on filing in route with Flight Service. Thanks 👍👍
Thanks again!
Matt, very informative video, thanks for sharing, you are the consummate pilot.
@@billgalante1181 thank you sir!
I'm just getting recurrent after years of airline flying. This DIY type IFR is completely different in that almost all the planning was done by the company dispatch. We just flew the plan as filed. Also, using Foreflight in new to me, so this video was quite helpful. I followed along with your planning on my iPad. i sure wish they'd find a better way of locating and deciphering NOTAMS that might affect a flight. The current system is really lacking. Thanks for the very informative video and step-by-step process.
You are welcome and thanks for the feedback. There are two convenient places to find Notams- one is from the map page, on the FPL or flightplan function, when connected to the internet there will be an exclamation point next to each airport if it has notams. The other is to send the flight plan to “flights”and on the top right there is a “messages” button that will detail notams. Hope this helps and blue skies! -TFS

Perfect! Thanks for coming along!
If I’m heading towards buildup, I usually ask the controller to vector me a little bit around the weather before I get into unknown turbulence. One other thing, flying with flaps is drag. If you don’t need them, don’t use them. Fuel is expensive enough without having to impose more drag on the aircraft.
Deviations left and right are always helpful. Thanks for coming along!
As always great content - thank you. To your point about filing an approach when filing the flight plan I reckon the only downside is if the winds/runways change. I will try this on my next flight - thank you
You are correct, it is always a good idea to update the weather along the route and be flexible with your plans. Also the prog charts will give you a heads up if a wind shift is imminent.
Matt, great video, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for coming along @billgalante1181!
I fly a 210 and have added to check brakes to my GUMPS checklist because the 210 has a brake line swivel that can leak, or suck air, during retract air extending. Don’t ask me how I learned this. Smile
That's good advice, I am familiar with the swivel but have never had the brakes fail from a bad one.
Been enjoying your videos. I have an Aspen 2000 system paired with a GTN 650 and a 355. Would enjoy seeing some closer screen shots of your nav equipment for these flights. Have you ever considered using the VCALC feature of your 750? I find it pretty helpful for descent planning. Also, what message was flashing on your Aspen around the 27 minute mark? I didn’t hear the Aspen voice call out for altitudes and minimums, you running the original PFD?
I agree, I think and instrument shot would be a good addition and provide more context. I am working on a mount for the yoke that will be an instrument panel shot that will not interfere with my line of sight. It is the Aspen 1000 Pro Max. It was telling me "Caution Terrain" I do not know the exact parameters that sets it off but I do know it is related to a change in descent rate and the proximity to the ground. I have a Garmin Aera on the yoke in front of me that has the VCALC function on the screen and I reference it to back up my 500 fpm per thousand feet calculation. I really try to not get slammed dunked but ATC sometimes has other plans.
@@TheFlyingSalesman I hear ya about the slam dunks. I fly a slippery Mooney with low flap and gear speeds. I guess lawn darting pressurized planes all day they tend to forget about the rest of us. Keep up the great content!
I don’t recall you listening to asos, maybe I missed it. I remember you loading it. Was that what you may have missed!
lol, no I edited it out to keep things moving. I did not activate the approach.

That great, I am glad it is helping. Let me know if there is something you would like to see.
Thanks for the videos, great content.
Thanks! I appreciate you coming along.
Where did you learn the technique of running the MP to 30”, let the turbo stabilize, the red line red line? Do you see any accelerated prop wear or damage? I have a 1978 T206 and appreciate seeing how you manage your engine. I cruise LOP after taking the Advanced Pilot Seminar as advocated by Savvy Aviation. Generally 31” 2300rpm (65% power) at 13 GPH.
Flight Safety teaches that takeoff sequence for turbocharged engines. . I do not see any signs of wear or damage.
With the GTN 750or 650, if the approach is loaded and your flight plan includes the IAF, navigation will sequence without you “Activating the approach as you are already on the approach at the IAF. Keep the videos coming. I appreciate that tip going into uncontrolled fields. Very helpful! Thank you, Rick
I need to double check this. I should have activated the approach as soon as I was cleared. When I activated it between MOMTE and PAYIT, the autopilot started a turn to MOMTE. I should have selected Vectors to final and HDG + NAV on the autopilot. Then it would have track straight in.
Brings back memories of flying into uncontrolled airports.
@747FoSophie, do you fly GA at all anymore?
@@TheFlyingSalesman I haven't flown GA in many years.
Got a question. Can you tell me what is purpose of carburetor heat besides keeping ice from forming in carburetor . I see carburetor heat being added when the weather is not in icing conditions. Please explane
Carb heat should be applied every time power is reduced due to temperature and pressure differences in the Venturi type carburetor that can cause icing well above freezing OAT. Applying carb heat every time forms good habits that avoid carb ice causing and engine to stop running. The 210 I got is fuel injected and there fire does not have carb heat.
@@TheFlyingSalesman thanks
With the weather you had for the video, loss of communications would probably have you returning VFR to your departure airport. The routing you mentioned would be useful for an IMC day. John ATP/CFII SMEL.
Except that KPBF had an avionics shop, I agree with you.
I'm still learning this IFR flying I think you forgot to load your approach , or you load it vectors to final. Thanks for posting . i enjoyed that flight
Close, I didn’t activate the approach prior to the initial and when I did, it wanted me to fly back to the IAF.
