  • We have all heard of “pop-up” IFR flight plans, but what happens when ATC is too busy and can’t give you one? You may know How to file an IFR flight plan. However, in this week’s video, I show you How to file an IFR flight plan in the air. I have needed to use this when I was above a scattered cloud layer that had become broken and overcast at my destination. I could have started down early, but I wanted to stay at altitude for as long as I could. ATC was too busy for a pop-up IFR and I had to use this tip to make it to my destination. Also in this Episode, an early mentor of mine is awarded the Charles E. Taylor award from the FAA. -TFS

I pay for my own brakes. If I want to use the ENTIRE runway to land... I'm using the ENTIRE runway to land! Great video as always!

Thanks @boogerwood! I am not afraid to use runway for the sake of a smooth landing. That said, every so often I want to make sure I still got "it". Thanks for coming along!

Magnetic north is constantly changing and each airport has to adjust runway headings once they are too far out of spec. Here is most likely WAY MORE detail than you were looking for... www.ncei.noaa.gov/news/airport-runway-names-shift-magnetic-field

Very nice video on an important topic. As you mentioned early in the video, one option is to (1) request of Approach/Center a pop-up IFR clearance to destination. Downside of this, especially in busy airspace is the dreaded "unable (I'm too busy)". The option you demonstrate is (2) going off frequency to radio FSS and request for them to prepare and behind-the-scenes file, receive confirmaton from ATC. Downside is the off-frequency time (likely several minutes), which can be quite nerve-wracking, especially in high traffic areas. The option I prefer is demonstrated in the video linked below at 12:02 and is to (3) electronically file an IFR flight plan in-the-air from ForeFlight using my cell phone and then simply request of Approach/Center (at 13:55 in the video below) to pick up that clearance. I've had this work many many times even at 10,000+ AGL... after all, it's effectively a simple text message from ForeFlight to ATC (i.e. bypassing FSS). The upside is zero time off-frequency with Approach/Center. Wayne (DA40 KSBA)

@@TheFlyingSalesman, let me know how option (3) works for you. I expect ForeFlight tries a number of times to connect and send its short message. I'll not be at Oshkosh (not a fan of crowds 🙂). Keep up the good work on the videos.

Great video with IFR procedures. Only tweak I would offer is the music at the takeoff sequence was a bit loud and distracting. Occasionally we hear music for a video intro title sequence, but I feel it doesn't add anything during the body of the video.

I bet you never thought you'd hear this "a little less right rudder". Sorry couldn't help myself. On a serious note file on the ground (ipad) but leave it in filed status, when you hit your area for IFR, pick it up with a current location. Works so much better and way faster since its already holding in the system.

@@TheFlyingSalesman 100% agree with intent of this video, and the info to file inflight was 100%, just cumbersome. Keep the greasy side down.
