Jaguar XJS Gets a Modern Radio - $75 Single DIN Apple CarPlay / Android Auto! Will it even work?
If there's one thing I have learned to dislike, it's flashy modern headunits in classic vehicles. Don't get me wrong, I love a nice stereo/head unit, but often times flashy modern radios look goofy the day they go on market, and worse as they age. Case in point - this 2000's looking cassette deck in this Jag.
I tend to gravitate to original or original looking radios. But I do love Android Auto, and use screen-based head units in many cars. My goal there is clean looking units that will age well, and they must work well.
Originally I planned to use a Continental/VDO head unit that is very popular for 1980s/1990s Euro cars. It's a clean looking modern radio that matches the period aesthetic.
But then I found out there are folks making Single DIN* radios with screens that run Android and support Apple Carplay / Android Auto. Further research, and I found one for $78 with coupon code off Ebay. Surely this was too good to pass up!
That unit arrived, and well, it looks pretty clean. So much in fact I think I'll try it in the XJS!
So come along as we do just that! Will it fit? Will it even work? Is it any good? Stick around and find out!

Amazon Options for similar radios:
These two appear to match the design of the one I used, and also currently are cheaper. They may not have all the same accessories so check each one to choose which you prefer. Also, I'm sure the screen size is the same - one just rounded up to 6.9 from 6.86...marketing :)

AstroAI AutoRange- I have this one, and it's actually a nice unit for the price so far - backlit display, magnet mount optoin, and only $27 at time of publish:

INNOVA 3320 AutoRange - Have had one of these for years and never had an issue - $32 at time of publish

FLUKE 117 - I got a secondhand one recently, and it's a great unit! For when you are really serious - $225.
(Honestly though, for basic automotive use, and not used daily or with ultra precision needed, the cheaper options take you VERY far and work very well - but this is more of the "ultimate")

    If your A/C compressor is weeping a bit of mineral oil out the back seal, it runs down above the oil pan and around before dripping off the oil pan, looking like an oil pan gasket leak. Just an FYI, because mine does this.

    Town & country horns. Dual-note ones on the underside are country, or American-style (loud). Ones mounted on radiator are town horns that made the more polite Euro-style meep-meep. My US Gen1 W126 only has town horns, but I see chassis bolt holes for the country horns, so maybe it was an option and/or standard on the Gen2.

    As a Sunair factory vendor I will say it's very easy to obtain "S6" Compressor parts and far easier than you make it appear in this video. Although, your problem is not uncommon when going with a different model drop in replacement compressor model. Inside that "S6" compressor it's actually a Denso 10PA17 series compressor!

    Those seat controls are called "haptic" which is the technical term for controls that use the design of the component for ease of use. This car is responsible for so many innovations that all other car makers use today that the list would be to long to articulate. The 560SEL was the flagship of the sedans but there is so arguments on whether the coupe 126C and the 107 convertibles was the actual top of the line car within the fleet. I find the black over grey is one of the most common colors and i prefer the more rare blues or cranberrys on these vehicles so you stand out among your peers. These are what were thought of as "forever cars". Since almost all the components could be disassembled and repaired without fear that you could no longer find the needed parts. Bank vault quality and international recognition is paramount with these cars.

    Just wondering why the dealership mentioned nothing about doing an early oil change on our new Hybrid CRV. As a matter of fact, they said they won't change it (on the free oil changes deal) until the 15% light comes on around 7,000. We are at 4,xxx now. How bad have I screwed up?

    • @VortexGarage
      @VortexGarage Před 17 dny

      I would not stress over that. Honda programs the maintenance minders keeping everything in mind. Doing the change as early as I did is an old school mentality and probably not needed. An early first oil change is not part of Hondas official maintenance minders or recommendations - I certainly could have waited. Also being a hybrid the engine is not running all the time so it has less engine run time on the mileage compared to a comparable gas-only engine. While I still prefer earlier oil changes, you are doing better than many by sticking to Hondas maintenance minder, and having records of it changed at the dealer one-time will protect the warranty. If you're really aggressive on it you can pay for an earlier change but to get the bundled maintenance for free so long as it's before or at the maintenance intervals you should be good

    I've got a 2005 Vibe AWD and live in the salt belt of upstate NY. My biggest concern right now is rusting on the rear crossmember, but it's such an easy car to work on, unexplainably roomy inside, and with decent MPG that it would be worth just replacing when the time comes. In the meantime, an annual dousing of Surface Shield with routine maintenance have been the standard course for me.

    • @VortexGarage
      @VortexGarage Před 25 dny

      Funny you say that, I have decided that I can't drive the car more without further addressing cooling system. Was hoping to and did get to enjoy it some. But noticed as summer came in it ran a slight bit hot on one drive. Not terrible but enough to say not gonna risk it anymore. And yeah though the yellow fan looks good I understand they really crack in hidden areas around the hub. Ive been collecting parts - waiting on a few backordered hoses but got the right thermostats, a new black fan, fan clutch, hoses, new header tank, and gonna pull the rad and either have it boiled, recored or get the Wizard cooling aluminum rad. Just gonna do it all, though I think the main issue I'm seeing is a faulty fan clutch, once I'm in there I'm just gonna do it all. I had hoped to sneak by some drive time this summer and address after the season but not going to chance it.

      @@VortexGarage Totally understand! Every single thing I read about these beasts is keep it cool!!! Do yourself a favor and test the thermostats out of the car for the proper travel values. A few people on the forum have gotten stats and they ended up being wrong.

    This video is an absolute godsend haha, there's very little information about the lucas ignition system on CZcams so thanks for that. But ill probably be switching to the mobek independent system as it is basically modern reliable ignition and fueling without all the vacuum operated nonsense

    I wonder if you had similar issue I did re replacement pick up coil and link lead. The new pick up replacements seem to be wired incorrectly - compare old wiring to new before installation.

    I would love a vibe or a matrix will probably be my next car.

    So, I got the passenger side mirror with the housing still attached, but I just need the mirror part to put on the car (04 Lincoln Town Car). I tried to pop out the new mirror to install on our Lincoln, but it's not coming off nearly as easily as it seems to in this video. Does it just take more force than I'm applying? Or is the passenger side mirror somehow fundamentally different inside the housing?

      Rubber, plastic and fluids age regardless of mileage. I have and older Ford and an old MB. Both under 50k miles. Shit just breaks and I only drive them a few hundred miles a year.

    Wasting money changing oil at 1500 miles.

      Nope , it's smart to get break-in out . Filter doesn't catch it all

    • @pigg20021
      @pigg20021 Před měsícem

      Break-in oil change is the most important service of any engines life, especially turbo charged. The machining process can sometimes leave behind micro metals that can lead to premature engine wear or failure. This is why Toyota is recalling all of their Tundra motors. The owners who performed break-in services probably won't have engine failure. It's not a waste of money, it's very intelligent!

      Your not wrong if your leasing or not planning on keeping it. For us whom keep their vehicles it's right on. I went to 2500 on 1st, a little long. Then I change the oil filter and top off at about 1/2 the recommended mileage or when oil gets dirty. Dealership hits it at every 7500. That oil stays pretty clean. I send in the oil to check it. The levels are always better than my race 347 in our 67 Mustang, our race 632 in our 79 Chevrolet k2500, or our stroked 318 in or 82 Chrysler new yorker...of course those are not as tight a motor or need a zero weight oil. Close on the 632...0W50. Lol
