Wasp-keeping '24 Chapter 1: start of nesting
First nest of the season belongs to two Polistes dominula females I caught from a meadow in mid-February.
I've been keeping wasps every year since 2018, which means this is my 7th year as a wasp-keeper!
My plans for this year include: using bigger mesh cages as opposed to tiny critter keepers; keeping two colonies of two different species to compare; testing silkworms as a source of proteins (for which I'll have to start a silkworm setup).
Southern Italy, spring 2024.

Cleopatra is a single foundress i caught from the wild in late March. She started her nest less than 24 hours after being caged. my plan is to compare the development of her colony to that of my other nest, started by three foundresses, and see how the two colonies will differ in their development.

This is the first of a series of videos on the life and development of a colony of Polistes dominula paper wasps. At the time of recording this video, the colony doesn't technically exist yet. Only four queens are present, all sisters, and hopefully they will all start a colony together once spring arrives. Chapter 1 will likely be about the process of waking up and the events that lead up to n...
Paper wasp queen laying an egg
zhlédnutí 5KPřed 3 lety
Polistes gallicus queen laying an egg in a newly started cell at the periphery of her nest. Over the course of colony development, a feedback loop can be seen where the queen sees empty new cells and responds by filling them with an egg, and the workers see the cells being occupied by eggs and respond by building new ones. Excluding external factors such as food availability and temperature, th...
Keeping wasps: How to raise a paper wasp colony (Polistes)

My method to raise Polistes colonies in captivity. Shout-out to Scott Nacko (YT: maculifrons) for giving me permission to use his photos of some North American species.
Introducing the new colony (Polistes dominula, pleometrosis)
zhlédnutí 809Před 3 lety
Wasp season 2021 opens with a really nice pleometrotic (more than one foundress) colony. Both females were caught in February in a field in Southern Italy, where nesting starts very early compared to most other temperate locations of the Northern Hemisphere. Hilda and Zelda were just two among many other paper wasps I saw the day I caught them, so the chances that they're related are quite low....
Wow, I want that nest!! Extremely large
This was truly amazing and inspiring it was really beautiful and interesting to see Family start out for nothing thrive, and flourish, and then ultimately fall to the passage of time 💯
Congrats on 1k subs man!
Are the cells they develop in bigger than the usual or do they somehow squish into a normal sized one?
In most Polistes wasps there is no size difference between castes
@@waspjournals41 thank you for the answer! I have a hive and have a lot of questions haha
@@codeegirl Ask me anything!
@@waspjournals41 thank you!! I have one queen and probably 30 workers, yellow jacket/paper wasp in North America. I sadly had an almost total die off of larve. Is it ok to feed them whole honey and water until they have pupae again?
Why do all the polistes look the same!!!
lol European Polistes are all part of a mullerian ring, they mimic each others to strengthen the aposematic coloration. Polistes from other continents have stunning and diverse colorations.
It Is Now 6 Years😊
can you do this with a nest that has larvae hatching and no workers or queen?
Does the nest need to be upside or does sideways work? It looks like yours is sideways and I need to reattach a nest that has babies in it.
You can reattach it in the same position it was in the wild
What is the songs to the vid
Why are they flapping their wings?
To cool down. At the time the footage was taken, it was 32°c and the guard rail was sweltering.
Your channel has taught me so much about wasps. I used to have an awful fear of wasps but now I love seeing them and giving them water dishes in my yard. Thank you so much
That's so amazing!
How do I know whos the queen?
What are you feeding them?
It looks like a deli slice of turkey for sandwiches
I have some growing outside of my bedroom window, we are becoming close friends lol JK ... Started with a single one, now they are growing into 5... I wonder how big will be?
What do they eat? Honey?
Lovely! Were you able to remove the nest without damaging any of the cells? If so, how?
The nest was attached to a cushion. I just pulled it apart slowly and it came off all in one piece.
@@waspjournals41 Fantastic. There is a Sceliphron nest near that I would like to keep/rear from, but it is stuck to brick wall and I'm afraid I'll break it.
I am so grateful to have found your videos! :-) Last summer I found a paper wasp nest outside of my window. At first I was scared but then quickly realized how docile they are, and I became amazed as I watched the queen feeding her babies. I watched them all year long until the nest was abandoned 💛 Now this year I found another nest but it was unfortunately in an unsafe place where my dog enjoys being. I knocked the nest down without damaging it, and the queen kept returning to where it was. That’s when I realized it already had several babies growing, I thought the cells were empty. :-( So at night time I moved the nest into a little bug cage, where they have happily been growing and are now a family of 6, and having more every day! I still have the bug cage sitting in the general location of where the nest originally was. I wanted to ask you if it is possible to move the cage to a different area about 50 feet away, to ensure my dog will be safe. I can easily and safely move the nest at night with all of the wasps on it inside of the bug cage, and put it in another safe area for them, but I worry that they will try to return to the original area instead of finding the new location again. Should I move the cage just a few feet per day so that it is a slower transition? Or will they be able to smell the new location? Thank you so much for your time and for being the awesome person that you are! :-) 💛
Are all those wasps potential queens? I would’ve thought that they’d try to stay away from each other to build their own nests. Will unrelated prospective queens work out which one will lay eggs and cooperate to form one colony?
Hey how is this wasp doing if it’s still doing well, can u pls do an update on it I love seeing wasp development throughout the season!
The colony has now its first workers, but they are free ranging, because unfortunately I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to keeping a colony. That's why I'm not making any updates
Will they for sure start building a nest in a week or 2 if u put wood in there?
For sure? no. But with P.dominula, I've found that the chances of nesting within a week are close to 100%. Some will even nest the day after capture. Other species might be more difficult, and of course it depends on the season, early spring being the best.
@@waspjournals41 so I caught a queen from a small nest with like 14 cells and the wasp won’t go on the nest it has like twice and it’s may 7 so do u think it will start a nest if I keep it in there for a while and I do have water and honey and the wood material too so do u think it will start a nest soon?

Hello! I wanna keep regular wasp . I love hornets , i don’t like keep hornets in home . They very danger!
Girl how many times you get stung? 😂
Heyy I've been following you for about two years and I'm happy that this year you started making videos again!
Complimenti 👏🏼💯
That 1 wasp at 5:24 is in a hurry😂
Wasps = awesome!
Hello! my polistes dominula nest is 9 weeks old, about 7 wasps hatched, but all are males, why could this happen? nest founded by 8 queens
They are unfertilized (did not mate in the autumn)
wow, i wish i had those here
Hey! I found a Bald-Faced hornet queen, is keeping it essentially the same thing?
No, this guide only works for Polistes wasps and not even all of them. I don't know of anyone who successfully started a BFH nest in captivity. You would probably need a very large cage, like a walk-in enclosure.
@@waspjournals41Yeah, that makes sense. They don't nests in cavities and their nests are soccer-ball sized.
Hey, what if I got my queen but I don't have a nest started? I have the sp. Polistes dominula and hence it's the start of the year I do not expect workers. Just caught her today inside the house, she's very calm in the containing box, not trying to escape or so.
The presence of a starter nest and conspecific foundresses in the same cage makes your chances of success nearly 100%. But it's not impossible for a lone foundress to start construction with no starter nest available, it's just less likely. How much less likely I'm not sure, but since P.dominula is a very easy species I would say you still have a good chance.
You've got one of the best channels on insect footage here on CZcams. There's nothing quite like it. Thanks for the knowledge you share with everyone!
Eventually european hornets did find this nest and prey upon it. But that was in october, so the colony managed to produce plenty of males and new queens for the next season, reaching reproductive success. I collected the nest and counted over a thousand cells.
Wasps are starting to come back out where I live. No nests, yet. Edit: I now have two wasp nests.
seeing wasps makes me so happy! it's still too cold where i am, hopefully it'll warm up soon.
I’m very glad u uploaded I love watching these wasps
Amazing how P. semenowi seems to have a similar life cycle to V. squamosa.
With a major difference: P.semenowi doesn't have a worker caste.
@@waspjournals41 Well in that case it's more like Vespula infernalis.
Those things give a nasty sting ! Beware when mowing lawns !
Beautiful video, but I have a question! How did you understand that it was a girl?
Males have a white face
what temperature and humidity do they need?
That was such a lovely video to watch. 😊
The pool may be a source of water for them, but the pool water is not good for them as the chemicals put in the pool will kill them.
What's the name of the first song you used? It sounds so familiar
My grandparents own a greenhouse and there was a nest that got about that size in there

Can i put a wasp into a fridge at a temperature around 7°C (45°F) in a dry box to keep her at a steady temperature while hibernating. I just found one between my flowers, and it will be to wet to survive there. And i do not have a lot of dry and cold places to put it.
I was just feeding a colony of v. Maculifrons shrimp surprisingly not many came to process it which is weird for this time of year
Thank you for sharing these beautiful moments with us ^-^
I hate it. I'm eating ham outside, and hornets flying around. Sometimes the land and eat. You just have to watch so you don't swallow one. But if you dare, you might try to pet one as it's eating. Never next to a nest though. I do l awn mowing next to flowers all the time. In my 50 years never been stung by a regular honey bee
Dope. Bet they were happy that day
Every time a wasp gets in my house I kidnap the wasp and put it in a container with a queen with honey and old nest and they do good
