Winter slumber

  • This is the first of a series of videos on the life and development of a colony of Polistes dominula paper wasps. At the time of recording this video, the colony doesn't technically exist yet. Only four queens are present, all sisters, and hopefully they will all start a colony together once spring arrives. Chapter 1 will likely be about the process of waking up and the events that lead up to nesting (dominance interactions and the like).
All the images in this video have been obtained in my balcony in Southern Italy between December 2021 and January 2022. The daffodils featured towards the end of the video belong to the species Narcissus tazetta, a typical winter bloomer.

I apologize for the low resolution of this video. The following videos will be in 1080p.

Really nice vid! Despite being extremely afraid of wasps when I was younger, I've learned to "understand" them and now when one circles around me or lands on me I just stay chill, they're cool creatures

Can i put a wasp into a fridge at a temperature around 7°C (45°F) in a dry box to keep her at a steady temperature while hibernating.
I just found one between my flowers, and it will be to wet to survive there. And i do not have a lot of dry and cold places to put it.

I have subscribed out of curiosity and intrigue, but I have to ask... Why? Why wasps? At least bees make honey but I don't think wasps do enough to warner such treatment. I of course mean no disrespect.

Thank you for the sub! Well let's say i don't keep wasps to get something in return, like a beekeeper would do, it's just a hobby i have. I just love these insects, their social life is truly fascinating, definitely more dynamic and interesting than that of ants and bees, that's my opinion anyway. I hope you'll give me the chance to show you how cool they are in upcoming chapters! Meanwhile, feel free to check out my previous videos. And don't forget that wasps do us a great ecological service by preying upon many crop pests.

@@waspjournals41 This only peaks my interest further! I didn't know they had distinct social behavior as you have described and I hope to peek through the veil by watching this and your previous series. Best of luck in your keeping!
