    I’ve never been so invested in a totally silent video about a topic I know nothing about.
    The CZcams rabbit hole has done it again

    i'm not ready to raise wasps myself, as i live in a tiny appartment and it might not be ideal, but this is incredibly interesting and i hope i'm able to do it someday :)

    Wow awesome video!! Perhaps I'll try this some day, I've been observing polistes wasps for a few years now, I'd love to observe a nest more closely like this!
    (Also getting to help out a local species like polistes fuscatus would be awesome!)
    Wasps are pretty under-researched, so I feel like if I want to learn more about their behavior I need to study them myself lol

    Nice vid! So cool to see more wasp keeping content on youtube. I personally love to give mine coloured construction materials, or at least bits of timber that aren't grey, just for something different :)

  • @makeracistsafraidagain

    This is a great project. Thank you.
    But all I have to do is lift the lid on my bbq and there they are.
    They are used to me and I feel quite safe with them.
    I'm pretty sure that your wasps will recognize you and not sting you.

    • @waspjournals41
      @waspjournals41 Před 2 lety +2

      Not easy, they need a lot of space (like a small greenhouse) and several shelters to choose from. And even then, the rate of failure is quite a bit higher than Polistes

    Hi, my husband and I are about to have some work done on our home and there's a paper wasp nest that will be in the way and we'd like to move them to a safe spot. We have a box that we can relocate the nest - it's small - so should I just put some sugar water on a Q-tip and get them off of the nest so we can move it? And would dusk be a good time to do it or night? Thank you for your help.

    I have a queen paper wasp in a critter keeper. With sugar water, water, honey and nectar. Have her nest on top and branches in there. Seems to me like she's dying. What can I do to save her? I don't want that to happen want to keep her until spring and let her go

    Hey, what if I got my queen but I don't have a nest started? I have the sp. Polistes dominula and hence it's the start of the year I do not expect workers. Just caught her today inside the house, she's very calm in the containing box, not trying to escape or so.

    • @waspjournals41
      @waspjournals41 Před 4 měsíci

      The presence of a starter nest and conspecific foundresses in the same cage makes your chances of success nearly 100%. But it's not impossible for a lone foundress to start construction with no starter nest available, it's just less likely. How much less likely I'm not sure, but since P.dominula is a very easy species I would say you still have a good chance.

  • @drsimons
    @drsimons Před 2 lety

    Excellent info! Have you ever tried feeding them crickets or mealworms? I just rescued a Polistes dominula nest from termite fumigation and haven't figured out a food source yet. I had another colony a few years ago and they seemed willing to eat crickets, but there was also a lot of cannibalism and the colony didn't last long. I'll try the honey though, that seems pretty easy!

    • @waspjournals41
      @waspjournals41 Před 2 lety +2

      Mealworms are very appreciated, they've been my staple for about three years, i haven't had a lot of luck with crickets but other keepers use them no problem, so it probably depends on the colony

    • @waspjournals41
      @waspjournals41 Před 4 měsíci

      No, this guide only works for Polistes wasps and not even all of them. I don't know of anyone who successfully started a BFH nest in captivity. You would probably need a very large cage, like a walk-in enclosure.

    • @kychu1445

  • @Ghosty893

    Will they for sure start building a nest in a week or 2 if u put wood in there?

    • @waspjournals41
      @waspjournals41 Před 2 měsíci

      For sure? no. But with P.dominula, I've found that the chances of nesting within a week are close to 100%. Some will even nest the day after capture. Other species might be more difficult, and of course it depends on the season, early spring being the best.

      @@waspjournals41 so I caught a queen from a small nest with like 14 cells and the wasp won’t go on the nest it has like twice and it’s may 7 so do u think it will start a nest if I keep it in there for a while and I do have water and honey and the wood material too so do u think it will start a nest soon?
