  • The founding stage is nearly over, soon there will be plenty of workers expanding the nest.

    so happy to find your channel! it's hard to find good content about wasps that isn't just "how to kill them" :/ im most interested in paper wasps and their behavior, i finally found a polistes fuscatus nest yesterday! i wonder if she was a queen raised from the nest that was there last year? they seem to return to the same spots, im excited to see how it will grow

      You'll have to wait a few more weeks, this season started off a bit on the slow side, but i will bring new content (new species!) soon

    Hello
    I have found a hibernating queen wasp today [german wasp] and I was wondering if I could keep it in my terrarium and after it layer some eggs in the nest that she made I would kelp it outside. Do you think it will make a nest?

    • @waspjournals41
      @waspjournals41  Před rokem +1

      Hi! if you're referring to Vespula germanica, unfortunately this species doesn't seem to nest easily in captivity. Many people have tried and failed. If you want to keep wasps, you should try with Polistes dominula, which nests very easily

      I have let the queen free as I spotted some more queen wasps flying in my yard.

    What are the distinguishing features of one of their queens?

    • @waspjournals41
      @waspjournals41  Před rokem

      None. There is no physical distinction between queens and workers in Polistes wasps. Both have the same organs and structure, both can mate and reproduce successfully if the circumstances require it. The only real difference is that queens can overwinter while workers cannot.
