    Hello! I am interested in a project to breed European polistes species. I study biology and live in Spain. I would love to contact you if you don’t mind, if you share an email, or social media account to write you. Thanks! Your videos about all of this are great!

    Do polistes accept meats like ham or chicken to feed there larvae?

    • @waspjournals41
      @waspjournals41  Před rokem +1

      no, only soft-bodied insects

      @@waspjournals41 sorry for all the questions but what about Vespula or Yellowjackets?

    • @waspjournals41
      @waspjournals41  Před rokem

      @@insectwildlife37 Vespula are scavengers, but only when the colony is mature. In the founding stage they also only/mostly collect bugs.

      I was observing a wild Dominula nest a couple of years ago on my parent's barn, and happened to be eating a ham sandwich. I tore of a tiny chunk of ham and offered it to the queen via a stick. It was reluctant at first to grab it, but it actually did grab it and I watched her chew on it and feed it to the larvae. But in captivity I'm not sure they would use regular meats as a main food source.

      Oh and I almost forgot to mention that I have also tried to offer a few different types of vertebrate meat to lots of other paper wasp nests. I raised 2 colonies of Polistes Aurifer, and those wasps would never accept any type of vertebrate meat at all. I've offered it to lots of other wild Dominula nests, and none of them would accept it either. Mostly they would lunge at it and reject it. At best, they would grab it and chew on it and drop it away from the nest. Sometimes they would pace rapidly back and forth around the nest seemingly unsure of what to do with it, maybe perceiving it as a threat. However when I would give them insect meat (I had wax worms for the Aurifer colonies) they nearly always accepted it.
      It's only that one Dominula queen I mentioned in my original comment that accepted the ham meat. I definitely saw her feeding it to the larvae, I watched her chew it and make a food ball, feed it to the larvae, and I could clearly see them eating it. I only saw one worker active on that particular nest late in the season, and perhaps she accepted it because resources were scarce or something.

    This species looks almost indistinguishable from polistes dominula. How can the two be differentiated?

      The head is much bigger. The face is almost pug-like, with strong mandibles. Check this side-by-side comparison imgur.com/U3UdIEr
