Wasp-keeping '24 Chapter 1: start of nesting

  • First nest of the season belongs to two Polistes dominula females I caught from a meadow in mid-February.
I've been keeping wasps every year since 2018, which means this is my 7th year as a wasp-keeper!
My plans for this year include: using bigger mesh cages as opposed to tiny critter keepers; keeping two colonies of two different species to compare; testing silkworms as a source of proteins (for which I'll have to start a silkworm setup).
    Southern Italy, spring 2024.

Your channel has taught me so much about wasps. I used to have an awful fear of wasps but now I love seeing them and giving them water dishes in my yard. Thank you so much

I am so grateful to have found your videos! :-)
Last summer I found a paper wasp nest outside of my window. At first I was scared but then quickly realized how docile they are, and I became amazed as I watched the queen feeding her babies. I watched them all year long until the nest was abandoned 💛
Now this year I found another nest but it was unfortunately in an unsafe place where my dog enjoys being. I knocked the nest down without damaging it, and the queen kept returning to where it was. That’s when I realized it already had several babies growing, I thought the cells were empty. :-(
So at night time I moved the nest into a little bug cage, where they have happily been growing and are now a family of 6, and having more every day!
I still have the bug cage sitting in the general location of where the nest originally was.
I wanted to ask you if it is possible to move the cage to a different area about 50 feet away, to ensure my dog will be safe. I can easily and safely move the nest at night with all of the wasps on it inside of the bug cage, and put it in another safe area for them, but I worry that they will try to return to the original area instead of finding the new location again. Should I move the cage just a few feet per day so that it is a slower transition? Or will they be able to smell the new location?
Thank you so much for your time and for being the awesome person that you are! :-) 💛

Wasps are starting to come back out where I live. No nests, yet.
Edit: I now have two wasp nests.

Are all those wasps potential queens? I would’ve thought that they’d try to stay away from each other to build their own nests. Will unrelated prospective queens work out which one will lay eggs and cooperate to form one colony?

The colony has now its first workers, but they are free ranging, because unfortunately I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to keeping a colony. That's why I'm not making any updates

I had mixed results with nimpha. Tried about four times but I only was successful in getting them to nest once.

    Hello!
my polistes dominula nest is 9 weeks old, about 7 wasps hatched, but all are males, why could this happen?
    nest founded by 8 queens

They are unfertilized (did not mate in the autumn)
