    We're talking about the best CPUs of 2023 to recap the year. Between new prices and benchmarks, we can now look at AMD vs. Intel offerings for the best gaming CPUs, best CPUs for Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, programming & compile, and efficiency, and more. This round-up is made to try and help PC builders who've been out of the game for a little while quickly get back up to speed, with comparisons between key CPUs like the AM5 Ryzen 7000 & Intel 14th "Gen" parts. Some of the top CPUs for the year include the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, AMD R7 5800X3D, Intel i3-12100F, Threadripper 7980X, and more that we'll talk about.

    We love doing these videos! It's a fun way to recap the year and try to get back to grips with how much has happened in the hardware space. Tons of stuff going on right now, and with prices in flux (and mostly dropping for CPUs), options are opening up for new builds. Keep in mind that as prices fluctuate for Black Friday or Cyber Monday, the 'best' value may move around. The original reviews are all linked in the description. AM5 is only scheduled to last until 2026, so you won't have the same longevity in socket as AM4 had. Honestly, I'm not disappointed with this, as AM5 was too premature needing lowly RAM speed, and over delivering in PCIe gen 5, with storage unreliable due to overheating failure. Also the Z height IHS is an abomination of design. I would have preferred to buy a new cooler adapter or cooler entirely than have a 95 degree boosting chip, using 20w of extra power.

    • @radar4104
      @radar4104 Před 6 měsíci

      @@DeadSpy2 That'd be nice, though I doubt AM5 will have the same longevity, think AM4 was a one off thing now that they've got quite a bit of market share back lol, I believe we've only got Zen 5 confirmed for it, which makes sense with the expectation of support through 2025.
      But yea, as long as it's stable and well performing, I'm happy. It's served me quite well in the short 3 days I've been running it, and I haven't experienced issues like long boot times that early AM5 adopters reported. Looking forward to trying more demanding games on it

      AMD's strategy of making desktop chips out of "rejected" CCDs that aren't good enough for Epyc and Threadripper means AMD can't just stop making desktop chips. They will always be a side product of Epyc production. Which means AMD will simply flush the price out the toilet if they have to, as they're making severely big bucks in the datacenter, and have no desire to just throw the "rejects" away. So they will be sold at whatever price they can get for them. Intel can stop production of desktop chips if the market is saturated. AMD can't.

      The 9900k was Intel's last truly amazing CPU. For me it was up between that and the Ryzen 2700X, but between being "a habitual AMD customer" and needing strong software compilation performance (my Phenom II X6 1100T was a work horse for that!) I went with the 2700X which was a godsend choice as I ended upgrading to the 5950X.... But then the aunty looking little brainiac known as Dr Su rocked the world with the 5800X3D and my jaw dropped along with everyone else's. I've become accustomed to just sacrificing a bit of gaming performance for getting the best work-horse performance I can, but the 5950X was already king of the hill, so I hoped desperately for a 5950X3D.... And that's how AMD "hooked me" into upgrading a lot sooner than I normally would. The 7950X3D was just too bloody tempting and I caved :P

You can get a decent board, 32GB of RAM, a 5800X3D, 2TB storage, PSU and a 7800XT for $1200. Do the same on AM5 and you'll have to step that GPU down a tier or cough up another $100-ish.

      with ram prices going up, storage prices going up for SATA, as NVME gets cheaper yeah I went with AM5 for those reasons and i upgrade on similar cycles.
      Thus if your doing a full system its better to go to a platform that's going to be around and have upgrade paths open and that has cheap parts.
      Ram requirements change fast it was only a few years ago people could get away with 16gb now its very hard to manage. "i normally use 32 to 64gb on my workstations" but yeah when i first jumped on the AM5 platform a cost saving was just getting a basic sticks of ram to get me through and it was hell going back to 16gb its tough to manage on 32gb.
      Also have you factored in the power requirements of newer platform as well?
      Productivity / power efficiency.....
      Allot of people are guilty of not taking this into account.
      But if ignored that when i was buying 3 screens and went with a cheaper monitor that used more power the savings i got by going a more expensive monitor paid for it self in less than a year, it all adds up.

      It is and it isn't. What made the 5800X3D such an absurd beast is that AMD's I/O Die was capping out at 3733MHz with tinkering, and 3600MHz for all-the-time-every-time XMP, so the effect of V-Cache was really great. The 7800X3D is still decently faster than the 7700X, but because the 7700X isn't nearly as limited by 6000MHz as the 5800X was by 3600MHz the gain isn't nearly as absurdly mind-blowing.
      I think the last AM5 X3D is going to be "the next 5800X3D", as that's when DDR5 is about maxed out and the cache starts doing the heavy lifting. And since that will also be the last upgrade option for AM5 I think AMD will likewise keep it in production for a long time.

For budget, you can use the included wraith prism instead of spending another $30-100. Surprised to not see it mentioned or at least present in the charts for comparison. Not as much of a "gaming" cpu as the x3d chips, but much better value if you plan on doing any actual work. Plan on doing the drop-in upgrade in a few years to whatever Ryzen 8k or 9k has to offer.
