    Just FYI, Mairsil is male. He's the guy who trapped Ith (i.e. Maze of Ith) inside a cage, hence the cage counter mechanic on his card.

      whats totally nuts is I was reading some old card from legends a month ago (i forgot what it was) whose flavor text was a quote from mairsil, and I had never heard of this character before. Literally at the same time, while reading the card I saw the C17 spoilers on wizards and found this new Mairsil, I couldnt believe the timing!
      It was a crazy coincidence!

    Just to let you guys know, Mirage mirror can target itself. This means mairsil can target himself and become a copy. When you do this you can then activate all the abilities again, cause it's technically a different ability than was activated before. This is probably the easiest way to go infinite with mairsil that I found.

    • @adbirk19
      @adbirk19 Před 6 lety +2

      Mirror of the forebears is good in this case too

    • @MultiGameFreaker
      @MultiGameFreaker Před 6 lety +3

      Pro Skyrim Mlg Mirror of the Forebears only works if you actually play it though, not if you cage it, since no creature type was chosen and hence can't target anything

    • @adbirk19
      @adbirk19 Před 6 lety +2

      Very true.

    • @TheFoxlover93
      @TheFoxlover93 Před 6 lety +1

      Mirage Mirror would work the same as Quicksilver Elemental, in the sense that you can activate all of the abilities you want an additional time. You can still only use the Mirror's ability "once each turn".

    • @adbirk19
      @adbirk19 Před 6 lety +6

      Foxboy93 as long as mirrage mirror is exiled with a cage counter on it, it's exactly the same. The "copy" of mairsil will gain a new mirage mirror ability and be able to go infinite.

  • @GuardianAngelEatos
    @GuardianAngelEatos Před 6 lety +2

    Nice deck Josh! What about Morphling though? I'm shocked that you didn't mention it or add it to your deck! One fun combo is make Mairsil become the target of a spell with Spellskite , then using Torchling to change the target to something else.

  • @porgy29
    @porgy29 Před 6 lety +2

    I had looked at him and did some brewing myself already. One card that feels like it could be really good is Illusionists Bracers. It has dis-synergy with the bounce and flicker effects since it costs 3 to equip but it allows you to double many of his abilities, including the untap ones. Another card that I like for the deck is Cavern Harpy since you can bounce him to your hand whenever you want to put more cage counters on stuff or protect him from removal (since he will always cost 4 from your hand). With a haste enabler and enough mana rocks on him it might even let him go infinite.

    Great deck tech as always guys!! Mairsil was the only legend from this set that as soon as i saw it i thought 'must build asap'. I also have plans for a nazahn voltron deck but mairsil is my absolute favourite general from c17. This video gave me some good ideas i didnt think of as well as showing why a couple of cards i had in the deck arent quite as good as i thought

  • @HowHotIsGlottis
    @HowHotIsGlottis Před 6 lety +1

    Cool deck tech! Nice to see the brewers at work with this one and to hear all the ways you can manipulate the rules of the game in your favor with Mairsil.
    What prevents me from building these types of decks though is that they are going all in on the commander. It doesn't have a back-up plan/several different routes to victory (they all use Mairsil). One Song of the Dryads or Linvala and chances are you are reduced to a spectator for the remainder of the game. Maybe you can add more cards that help you cope with the Achilles heel of the deck consistently (more counters or versatile removal?) if that is a situation you find yourself in too often.
    Might be an interesting topic for an episode btw: understanding your deck's Achilles heel and taking that into account in your build.
    Keep up the good work guys!

    Prognostic sphinx is an AMAZING card in this deck.
    For discarding a card, you can give hexproof to meirsil until end of turn. You have to tap it, but it is NOT IN THE COST, so you can use it multiple times in each different turns and toss cards you actually want to put cage counters on, protecting mairsil even further.

  • @thof4971
    @thof4971 Před 6 lety +13

    I love all the different ways this deck can go. I've been running Mairsil as a grixis reanimator deck and use him as a second copy of the big finishers. 2 cards that have been all stars for me have been Oona, Queen of the Fae who provides blockers/deck disruption and Cavern Harpy which has been great at getting Mairsil out of trouble mana free as well as being another sick combo with the disk. Great video as always!

    • @GuardianAngelEatos
      @GuardianAngelEatos Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah I love how you can go in different directions with Mairsil! Combo, Voltron, or Reanimator.
      Reanimator is the direction that I've been thinking of going. It works perfectly since you want to play cards that draw and discard to fill up your graveyard for Mairsil, and you can dump large creatures with enter the battlefield triggers that you can reanimate with Havengul Lich, Hell's Caretaker, and my favorite Chainer, Dementia Master. I also like Oona, Queen of Fae in a Marsil deck, as well as Ghoulcaller Gisa in a reanimator deck. With Ghoulcaller Gisa and Dementia Master each turn if you have a ton of black you can bring a creature back for BBB and get a enter the battlefield trigger, then pay B, tap Mairsil, and sacrifice the reanimated creature to get a bunch of 2/2 tokens.

    combo:
    Cauldron of Souls(tap: any number of target creatures gain persist until end of turn)
    Leech Bonder(etbs with 2 -1/-1 counters and has U untap: move a counter from one creature to another)
    Altar of Dementia(Sac a dude: target player mills equal to the sac'ed creatures power)
    add any source of haste and you've now got U, put a -1/-1 counter on target creature: target player mills four(or whatever Mairsil's power is at the time) and trigger Mairsil's etb. it's a great way to fill up your graveyard and build up some massive Mairsil combo, the only limit is your blue mana and how many times you can put -1/-1 counters on other creatures, both can be fixed by exiling more stuff, namely blue mana producers and token makers.
    also, you didn't have them in that tappedout deck so might as well mention the Artifact Lands, since you could play them or let Mairsil cage them so he can make mana.

    Concerning the content: sometimes I miss some structure when you talk about decks. I would love a segment(like stats) about "win cons" where you specifically talk about the aim of the deck and how you kill other people or win in general. Bringing in some focus at the end of all the cards you talk about, would be nice.

    Worse case scenario you can exile sol ring if it was wiped off the board and combo Pili-Pala to have mana ramp ( tap for 2 colorless, then un-tap for two colorless and add one mana of any color) This will not only allow an additional tap but a mana fixer if needed.

    I just started testing the mirror. Paying 2 to copy something that makes 2 or less mana is a nonbo. where it does work is copying static abilities. Q: when does "end of turn" effects interact with Mirror. eg. : playing against Atraxa, I would hold up 2 so Atraxa doesn't want to attack (protection), then on end of last turn (or beginning of my upkeep), I use that 2 to copy nix weaver to dump another 2 cards in my yard.

  • @shayneweyker

    Other cool ability cards not mentioned:
    Morphling (you can use *each* of it's abilities each turn, flying/shroud/untap)
    Memnarch (the fact that his steal ability isn't a tap ability and swings the game matters)
    Ambassador Laquatus (to use infinite mana and counter some tutors)
    Dralnu Lich Lord (better if you play more counters/draw/interaction)
    Pestillent Souleater
    Khalni Gem
    Null Brooch (stop non-creature combo/bombs all day, dump Anger)
    Goblin Welder
    Waterfront Bouncer (especially if you also play Gilded Drake)
    Enabler cards not mentioned:
    Cavern Harpy (good protection too)
    Pemmin's Aura
    Dark Imposter (as Quicksilver Elemental #2 and possibly replacing Necrotic Ooze if your grave is often empty of creatures)
    Dimir House Guard (cage to give Mairsil regen or tutor for Quicksiver or Anger or something else at 4 mana)
    Careful Study / Frantic Search / Faithless Looting to fix hands early and get Anger in grave
    Essence Flux
    Perplex (counter a spell, or tutor for; Quicksilver Impostor, Thousand-Year Elixir, Ambassador Laquatus, Capsize, or other 3 mana stuff.
    Compulsion/Whispers of the Muse/Braingeyser (decent draw that finds you a Capsize/Ambassdor or is a finisher if you get infinite mana)
    I think Havengul Lich is too mana intensive and runs against the the general exiling your creatures from the grave.
    Also if you play more instant speed interaction, putting up the 4UU in one turn main phase to get out Deadeye Navigator is going to leave you a bit shields down just when people really start getting worried about you.
    Rules question I'm curious about: If Mairsil cages a creature with the embalm ability and I then let him go to the grave. Does he have all the caged abilities when he's in the grave too? And if that's the case could I embalm a token copy of him into play and then send the card to the command zone? If I cage a creature with unearth can Mairsil unearth himself when in the grave?

      You missed Cauldron of Souls, four mana artifact with tap: any number of creatures gain persist. it's not hard to get rid of one -1/-1 counter, heck, Leech Bonder has an untap symbol and was built around moving -1/-1 counters.
      As for the Amonkhet keywords, he'd gain them while he is on the battlefield, but while he's in the graveyard he wouldn't have them. his ability is what gives him the Caged abilities, but since it doesn't state that he has them in all zones they aren't active off the battlefield.
      If this weren't true all abilities and effects would be active from the graveyard, for example, Crested Sunmare would be able to put 5/5s on the board and have the tribal indestructible even after you killed it.

      Yeah and this doesnt work. You DECK yourself, instead of putting everything in the graveyard. You literally lose the game as soon as you try to use "Mirror-Mad Phantasms" ability with Mairsil.
      It does not work with Mairsil.
      So it doesn't work, unless you want to lose on purpose.
      The rules of this card literally state:
      9/22/2011 : If no card named Mirror-Mad Phantasm is revealed (possibly because it was a card copying Mirror-Mad Phantasm or it was a token), all cards from that library will be put into their owner’s graveyard.
      9/22/2011 : If another creature (such as Necrotic Ooze) gains Mirror-Mad Phantasm’s activated ability, its owner reveals cards until he or she reveals a card named Mirror-Mad Phantasm.

    Use Sakashima the Impostor to copy Mairsil, The Pretender. Also, it enters play as a functional copy, so that another card can be exiled for a cage counter.

    I know you do not like infinite combos, however cauldron of souls + mindslaver + flicker + haste enabler does let you control your opponents for the rest of the game. It takes a lot of cards but I've Ben playing mairsil since he was spoiled and I have done it more time than I should be able to.

    It says that you may activate EACH of those abilities each turn. So am I understanding correctly that for every card exiled with a cage counter on it may be activated once this turn, not just one card but all with cage counters?

      Yep, that is indeed how it works. If you have an Oona, Queen of the Fae and a Aetherling, for example, you can activate one ability from each during the turn.

    • @EricHughes124

    • @williamschaefer1822
      @williamschaefer1822 Před 6 lety

      Eric Hughes "You may activate each of those abilities only once each turn" This means each of the abilities on each card that you own in exile with a cage counter may be activated only once on each of anyone's turn. Some abilities such as that of Quicksilver Elemental when caged can target mairisil to "refresh" all abilities for 1 more use for the low price of U. This can be repeated once for each blue mana available to you. Cage a guilded Lotus along with an untap ability and you are infinite with infinite mana! Cheers

    I would consider adding Chainer, dementia master and Steel hellkite as pay-off. Also the basalt monolith + rings of brighthearth combo could be decent here, as both of the cards by themselves should be pretty good most of the time even by themselves. If someone is doing duel commander I just checked the banlist and I think griselbrand is unbanned, should be pretty good.

  • @kylesavage4525

  • @PiroMunkie
    @PiroMunkie Před 6 lety

    I know there are time constraints on the video, but it felt like you spent so little time on protection. Soul of New Phyrexia is probably the hardest one to use. But things like Mirror-Mad Phantasm, Ovinomancer, Cephalid Inkshrouder, and Cavern Harpy are all great and easier to activat. Mirror-Mad is secretly incredible since it can easily dump a bunch of your library into the graveyard and letting you cage your best thing immediately while avoiding any targeted removal (I imagine this is also where Lab Man as a win con comes in).
    I feel like Intruder Alarm could be good here too... just lets you abuse any tap abilities every time an opponent plays a creature. Probably meta-dependent, but could be good.
    A couple cards I didn't see on EDHREC: Heartless Hidetsugu seems like a fun way to just start destroying people's life totals (my playgroup has a Trostani player so things like this are always necessary). Volrath of the Fallen is both a discard outlet and a pump spell. Since creatures in this deck seems to be big an bulky you could easily start killing off the weak or taking people out in combo with Pestilent Soul Eater.
    Spellskite seems useful depending on your meta (aura-tron, targeted pump spells/ability like Roon of the Hidden Realm, Venser planeswalker, etc).

    If Mairsil has Nev's Disk and Aetherling and you flicker in response to the disk ability activation, wouldn't the disk ability fizzle since Mairsil (the one doing the ability) is exiled when you get to it on the stack?

    • @aceadam1828
      @aceadam1828 Před 6 lety

      Matthew Heim nope. Nevs say destroy xyz not sacrifice it and destroy. Nevs doesnt have to be on the battlefield. Same reason you cant just simply bolt a creature in response to it using its ability. Ofc there are exceptions.

  • @viniciuspimentelcouto421

    I'd include Pack Rat. If Mairsil cages Pack Rat, you can start paying 2B to put a token that's a copy of Mairsil and cage an extra card. Then, you can either sacrifice the token and keep the original Mairsil; or you can sacrifice the older Mairsil and keep the new one, refreshing its "once per turn" clause.

    Here's an idea to go with the tree of perdition/hateflayer combo: use treasonous ogre with it. Once you have done exiled those three cards, assume you are all at 40 life in a commander game.
    Tap Mairsil, put enemy 1 at 4 life, pay 9 life to get 3 red Mana, hateflayer enemy 1 to death. Do this two more times.and you win. You need to pay a total of 27 to kill everyone on the board.
    Do this to and on the turn of the player who comes right after you in the turn order to effectively end their turn, and proceed turn order-wise to just destroy them all. Make sure you use a haste enabler to do this right after you play him.

    • @BaikenAndEggs
      @BaikenAndEggs Před 4 lety

      You need to flicker Mairsil after killing a player before redoing the combo again as you would have exchanged Mairsil's toughness with the other player's life total.
      So let's say player 2 had 40 life, doing the combo would kill player 2, but then Mairsil would be a 4/40 creature. So unless you flicker him to make him a 4/4 again, it would not work.

    Or instead of caging the Quicksilver Elemental you can use it to copy all the activated abilities of Mairsil and just bypass the "once per turn" restriction.

    • @BaikenAndEggs
      @BaikenAndEggs Před 4 lety

      Caging Quicksilver Elemental is what bypasses the once per turn gimmick.
      Everytime you use QSE's ability when caged, you get to use all of Mairsil's abilities again, including QSE. So as long as you have the mana, you have basically no restrictions.
