" enters the battlefield with a doom counter on '5'...move the doom counter to the left" The card is actually referencing the numbers located in the art. You put a doom counter on the "5" in the art, and move it to the left to 1 as you cast your spells.

Training Grounds doesn't work with X, because you don't control him when you activate his last ability. He's in a player's hand.

Correct. Whenever a card refers to "creatures you control" it refers only to the battlefield, not "creature cards in hands" which is what you would need. I believe there is no card with the intended ability of reducing the cost of activated abilities of cards in hand that would work for X.

"Out of color identity" sure, but you can pull from your opponents' graves.
My play group made a rule that if you want to use silver boarded cards in EDH, your deck must have minimum 40 silver boarded cards. We call the format Un-Real.
Actually that's a pretty solid ruling. Any abuse come out of it or did it stay pretty balanced?

You can activate X's first ability while he's in an opponent's hand, it's on the FAQ.
Baron Von Count with cascade spells?

If you are interested in adding other Un-cards to the 99, I'd recommend using Denied! in your X decks. Since your opponent's hand is always revealed, you basically have a single blue mana counterspell for something they cast.
Guy please please read the FAQ for the cards you are highlighting on the show. I am not hating it is just a suggestion that will help you improve the videos because you can move him from hand to hand with the first activated ability. they cover a lot of thing in the FAQ the cleared up confusions for me around X.
Update: I understand you might have made this video a while ago which might have let to the confusion about X's first activated ability.

Baron Von Count enters with a counter on 5. He has 5-1 written on him. That's where the counter goes. Proliferate would not put the counter on 5, it simply puts the counter on Baron Von Count and the counter does not move to any numbers under any circumstances.
Still better if it isn't possible, given that moving multiple doom counters at once would probabally cause the ability to trigger multiple times.
Bloodchief Ascension could be fun to have in an X deck. That way after you cast spells from someone else's hand, you also suck life from them. Also it combos with Mindcrank and Zur's Weirding. I have these cards in my Nekusar deck.
I am highly in favor of mashing together Platinum Phage the Untouchable Angel.
For X's abilities... the UNSTABLE FAQAWASLFAQPAFTIDAWABIAJTBT magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/unstable-faqawaslfaqpaftidawabiajtbt-2017-12-06 states:
When do I say which card I'm playing?
You choose the card as X's last ability resolves. This means your opponent can respond to you activating the ability to get cards out of their hand. But whatever's left when X's ability resolves is fair game.
When do I play that card?
As X's last ability resolves, with one exception: you can't play a land this way unless it's your turn and you haven't yet played a land that turn. But if you're casting a spell, you do it as the ability resolves. This means you can use X's ability to cast their sorceries or creatures during their turn, for example.
If I use X's ability to cast an instant or sorcery, does that spell go into my graveyard?
No. You don't own the cards you play this way. They'll go into your opponent's graveyard. The same is true if a creature card you cast this way later dies.
Can my opponent discard X while it's in their hand?
Yes, if something instructs them to or allows them to. X will go to your graveyard, as you're X's owner.
In multiplayer games, can I move X from one opponent's hand to another's?
Yes, you can. While X is in an opponent's hand, you can activate its middle ability. This is unusual, as normally tap abilities can't be activated from a player's hand. But X's first ability says you can, so you can.
I asked around about running Crow Storm in my Tiagam spellslinger deck, and the verdict was pretty much unanimous at "Thats hilarious, please do."
I put Crow Storm into my Kess spellslinger deck. It’s wonderful.
Blue/Green Crow Storm/Earl of Squirrel deck. Create a lot of Crow Storm tokens, then make them better by giving them +1/+1, even +2/+2 if you use the black border Squirrel Lord (Crazed Hermit IIRC?). And then fill the rest of your deck with more spells for Crow Storm and more token generation and synergy.

Harley Summers I made a sealed deck with him and with a goblin contraption theme. He is very fun and random with the dice drops.
My current plan is to assemble one deck for each 'group' (SNEAK, Crossbreed Labs...) using as many Unstable cards as possible along with a single full contraption deck and offer a table to play with them using a shared contraption deck (reshuffling when it runs out) and see how that goes - If I ever see you guys at an event, I'll be sure to show you my results! :D

Ya I don't know if there are enough host-augment cards for EDH, but definitely Cube worthy. Combine UnSets with Conspiracy cards :)

Mark Harris it was errata'd within an hour that you can only bounce a non-horse creature that hasn't been bounced by the pony that turn

You actually CAN use X's first ability to move it from one opponent's hand to another. Because X says you can. And X spots the mark.

Does training grounds affect the play any card from hand while he is your opponents hand
A couple of notes on Sen Triplets:
First, it actually isn’t that hard to make the mana base work. Exotic Orchard, City of Brass, Mana Confluence, Mycosynth Lattice, Celestial Dawn, and Chromatic Lantern are your friends. Add in a few any-color rocks like Darksteel Ingot or Cultivator’s Caravan for good measure. I’ve never had any trouble casting the Gruul player’s spells with Triplets.
Second, my experience has been the same as Craig’s. For some reason people seem to hate having their stuff stolen...

Hey guys, love the video! I recently built a Grusilda deck and I'd like to mention a few favorite combos. Inferno Titan is a favorite target, especially with Harvester of Souls or Barbed Shocker. Myriad creatures with Gray Merchant of Asphodel or Mindclaw Shaman are nasty etb triggers.
Special shoutout to Hateflayer and Kamahl, Pit Fighter for dealing 14 damage to a creature or player with a single tap/untap, as well as nuking indestructible stuff
Tory Shedd barbed shocker/ the og tempest shocker plus endbringer or thermoalchemist can make your opponents mill like 30 cards way too quickly and it's great
Anybody have a suggestion what legendary rakdos creature is a good substitute for Grusilda in non silver border?

In my LGS, we started a committee to make commander as fun as possible for everyone, trying to limit some of the more oppressive cards (destroy all lands and whatnot) and we as the committee went through all the unstable cards ever and said what is good and bad, so that past January its still ok in the store, so you have a deck that you won’t have to change cause the cards are illegal. Its pretty fun!!
I think Maro actually made a ruling that you can activate X's first ability in someone's hand.
with Grusilda's monster mash... how does undying/persist work with the mashed monster? how many awesome combinations are there?
they both trigger and then the +1 and -1 counters cancel each other out so you have a creature that never dies
Well, Josh and Jimmy, for the Baron Von Count deck with the extra turns, you could have infinite turns with the Final fortune.
Cards needs: Isochron Scepter, Final Fortune and Sundial of the Infinite.
Cast Isochron Scepter, imprint Final Fortune and then on the stack you can pay Sundial of the Infinite to end your turn. This infinite turn works provided that you activate the scepter on the extra turn after you activate the sundial. You would have to let the game loss go on the stack, then the sundial, and then the scepter. Once they all resolve, the copy of final fortune is in effect, the turn ended, and the new one began, untapping all lands and the scepter and sundial.
That saying, this combo works well with all the Rakdos commanders shown in this video.
The proper way to play X, after you got him in someone's hand is on the end step before your turn , you use his second ability to Cast X out of his or her hand which makes it come back to the battlefield under your control. And after your upkeep you use his first ability to put him in someone else's hand.
Grusilda works very well with cycling creatures and evoke creatures. Looting/rummaging is great, but things that bin themselves are just so dang handy.

Guys, with X you need to remember, you can use the last ability to steal their lands too. It doesn't say cast, it says 'play a card,' all of which is at instant speed.
Don't forget that Uncards care about the literal written text of a card. So Baron gets a boost from all the pre oath mana rocks. Like Revised edition Mana Vault counts as 1, 4, and 3!
Can you combo X with Supplant Form and/or Mimic Vat for more Xs?
Steal effects also hurt you with Baron Von Count. I tried it last monday, then a guy stolen it at count 2, played two spells and destroyed me...

White, red, and blue have the heaviest artifact/rigger support in this set.

What happens if you mash something with Grusilda that is owned by an opponent and that opponent loses/concedes? do you lose half/both the creature? what happens?
So does the combined creature remain combined when it goes to the graveyard? If so, you can combine that creature with another, and just keep combining to make a mashed up Voltron essentially
According to the FAQ, when a combined creature dies, the two creature cards that were combined are put into their respective owners' graveyards.
you're right that Brandon Sanderson would be an awesome guest. He is one of the regular cast on a writing podcast called Writing Excuses, so he knows how to be on record.
One With Nothing actually works with Griselda very well, especially if you can refill your hand with spells/empty your opponent's hand too
i could be wrong, but if you do illusionist bracers, couldnt you activate X's ability, copy it, put it in one person's hand, take one of their cards, let the original ability resolve to put it into another opponent's hand? its first ability doesnt specify that it has to be put into their hand from the battlefield.

I did build myself an X Commander deck and it turned out, that X is totally broken.
It has my old Oona deck as a base to get the big mana going. But the main problem is, that you can trigger X at instant speed.
My deck tries to get everyone into topdeck mode, then X allows you, to cast their cards during their drawphase. So they wont be able to play spells for the rest of the game, while you outvalue everyone else.
Now I switched over to a DR Jumblemoph build, that is way more fun. Its basicly a Mistform Ultimus deck in GW, but has a bunch of nice stuff going on with augment creatures and their ETBs.
With Baron Von Count, Madness could be another mechanic used. And maybe even part vampire tribal for when you don't have commander in play.
I have a question about Grusilda, Monster Masher. What happens when a combined creature with undying dies? Does the combined creature come back, or just the creature with undying?
I've been building an X deck, and thought I'd have a nekusar sub theme, where everyone draws cards (so that I can cast them) but also it pings them for damage when they do, using cards like price of knowledge and fate unraveler

If you ask me, -1 does not equal 1, because math, so that's how I'd rule it at my Table.
Ryan Nelson technically the negative "symbol" is just a placeholder for -1(X), so it is a 1

baron von count only looks for the numeral. he loves to count but is very bad at math.

It is the numeral, not the number, so -1 counts for 1 and 12 counts for 1 and 2. Also the FAQ clarifies that the M14 symbol does not count, nor the legal and set information.
I have been in a play group that has been using silver bouder cards, from the very beginning. We just let the people playing know we are using Silver bouder cards. For the few people like myself that use them, we just don't use anything to crazy. I personally have a five color ally deck, that the land base is set up for the card statues symbol. Most people just laugh at the card when I play it.
Also: You can actually use X's middle ability while in an opponents hand! (That was clarified in the faqawaslfaqpaftidawabiajtbt, though it loses against The Grand Calcutron...)
I forget but did anyone say if set number counts towards baron von count?
Flashback and Unearth are also good for Baron von Count. Madness might also help.
+The Command Zone Training Ground doesn't do anything for X. It only applies to creatures in play, but the 5 mana ability only works when X is in an opponent's hand. Nonbo.
I played against a Count deck last Saturday. He was basically the afterthought of the table, with the rest of us just agreeing to kill Count whenever he gets to 3. Otherwise, he couldn't really do anything to us.
"You may play a card in the same hand as X without paying its mana cost" The wording makes it that you can cast stuff in you own hand, right? So have it your hand, cast stuff that are expensive for only 5 mana. :D
Oh silver in Commander has been mild in our group, I've just added some to Atraxa, everyone can't stand her anyway :)

Long shot here but, despite not being officially legal anymore, is there any chance we could see a Game Knights using cards and commanders from the 3 un-sets + holiday cards?
I believe "The Grand Calcutron" is allowed to be your commander. It has the potential to be best (most oppressive) stax commander in the format, imo.
i added some silver bordered stuff to existing decks. i almost cast better than one into a hive mind and it was awesome! i wish i did do that, finding four more people sounds amazing
im okay with silver bordered cards in commander on a temp basis or with permission. I already got permission from my regualar playgroup to run Really Epic Punch and Water Gun Balloon Game in my bear tribal deck though so. Its a nice spice for our decks without being all un-commander. ALthough that'd be a fun deck to play on occasion if it was a "once in a blue moon" situation
I've really been wanting to put together an UnCommander deck for a while, now I think I'll put one together with X, keep it around as a casual deck.
I wish you guys would've talked about the fact that Mark Rosewater said you can use The Grand Calcutron as your commander.
For Grusilda: Murderous Redcap and Infinity Elemental for infinite damage to the face. XD Though I believe they banned the elemental from even silver-bordered magic. Oh well... my casual playgroup won't see it coming!
I soooo want to make some decks around the legendary unstable creatures. The easiest one to have a "back up" for though it probably Grimlock, because if anybody is a real pain about using a silver bordered card, you can just substitute Gahiji, Honored one as your commander instead for almost the same boost, You just sacrifice the toughness boost for some politics, but you do lose the 3 turn commander damage beat stick.
I thought Training Grounds only works on creatures you control. Control is specified to permanents you have on the battlefield or spells on the stack... Can you check if you control X in someone else's hand? I don't think you can reduce the act ability cost with that enchantment. Otherwise, cool video. Thanks
Does Archfiend of Ifnir work on 1? Those are -1/-1 counters, and last I checked -1 is not 1.
It refers to the numeral not the number. 1 is a numeral -1 is not. There is the numeral 1 in the number -1... so yes! :-)

With the baron von count, you are meant to put the counter on the number five on the card art, hence moving it to the left takes it down to four and so on. You literally have to track it's position, not its value.
Getting Sanderson on gameknights should be priority #1, amazing author great guy.
Monster mash combo with pila pala and the myth that taps for 2 colorless
The best commander card in the set is easily Spike. It allows for consistent turn 1 kills however for this to happen require you to own lots of very expensive cards. One way for example to win turn 1 would be have some way to access 2 generic mana on turn 1 like with soul ring or mana crypt among others and then cast spike and use her ability to get black lotus, tinker, and time vault to be able to take infinite turns.
I said this before i watched the video didn't see that they had mentioned her.
I built a Phoebe, Agent of Sneak. deck. Built her as with a lot of cards that come in as a "copy of a creature" to go with the spy theme, and a few cards that let me cast stuff from peoples hand/library/grave. In the 99 I am only running X,Very Cryptic Command, and Animate Library, and Summon the Pack as extra silver border. and those are just for fun. Hoping to play with it thi week. Most of the ccards where borrowed from Gisa+Geralf and maybee if people dont let me play Phoebe after the 15th, I can run Lazav or Sakashima in the command zone in the future

Also, though Rings work, Training Grounds doesn't. You don't control him when he's in your opponents hand. I suppose it could reduce the initial UB to just be UB though,
I already did build a X deck (very similar to the oona deck i own). And i got to say its actually busted. You can activate X right after their drawstep, and cast the card they did just draw - which lockes them out of the game.
So my playgroup forbid me to bring it to games :(

Hang on a minute, about the level up creatures. When cast, their power and toughness aren't supposed to be the Lvl-0 power and toughness? Are the other power and toughness considered, since they do not count unless the card's on the battlefield with the indicated level up counters? Being that Baron Von Count is a silver bordered card, maybe it is allowed, but by a normal game perspective, those other power/toughness boxes wouldn't count, similar to the power/toughness boxes on vehicles.
Well, if level up power/toughness are considered inside the text box, it definitely works. So, dunno. Maybe "it works" is the correct answer, since it's also the funniest.
I think it would be really cool if you guys did a game knights with Jumbo Commander and MTG Muddstah (two other mtg channels based on commander). I watch both of them on a daily basis and would absolutely love to see them in an episode!
I drafted unstable and added Eorl of Squirrel to my completely nonsilver bordered Omnath EDH deck and ended up with 50 Elemental squirrels. Got board wiped and dealt 150 damage divided among each opponent and slayed.
Grusilda can be SO broken and I love it. If you make a mardu deck (not edh) based around graveyarding midnight guard and krenko mob boss.

What sucks is that oracle has changed since the last silver border commander video you guys did.
