    Show Notes:
    We all have cards we think are awesome but that never seem to show up on the opponent's side of the table. Why is no one else playing this stuff? On today's episode, Josh and DJ make the case for some of their favorite underrated cards in Commander.

    Funniest game I ever saw with Proteus Staff - one guy had a Blightsteel Colossus out when the Izzet player cloned it and then tucked the original with Proteus Staff - the Blightsteel player revealed three non-creatures before revealing Phage the Untouchable. RIP.

    So I don't know if this would be overegging the pudding, but what are the chances of keeping DJ on even when Jimmy comes back? Or at least as a frequently recurring guest? He's just bringing a really fresh perspective to the show, not to mention great chemistry with the both of you. I dunno if that would work out logistically but I for one would love it

    @Corran109 Před 6 lety +24

    BTW Hall of Gemstone affects everyone at the same time. If I pick red on my turn, everyone else can only tap for red as well. The big consequence of this is that you can shut of the vast majority of counterspells on your turn by picking anything other than blue.

    Great underrated cards:
    - Traverse the Ulvenwald

    "Look at target player's hand, the top card of that player's library, and any face-down creatures they control. Look at the top four cards of your library, then put them back in any order."

    Haha DJ's the best. Someone thats puts Nevermore and Null Chamber on a list of cards that should be played more often... XD
    My favorite card thats underrated:
    - Kami of False Hope --> WHITE Sporefrog. Its really strong. U can find it with Ranger of Eos and can easily recur it over and over again. Especially in white that has stuff like Reveillark, Sun Titan, Bishop of Rebirth and so on. Even better when ur playing black. I play it in my Ayli deck and im really advocating ppl to play this card more often.

    So, my favorite deck in magic is an EDH lands deck, gitrog, omnath, Tatyova, child of alara, whatever. In each and every one with blue I play Trade Routs. Trade Routs is an absolutely awesome blue enchantment, it's is less then 700 decks on EDH rec, it's less then a dollar, and if you can play it is your turbo lands deck you must. Look it up.

    Not sure if this has been mentioned on any episodes or not, but Lim Dul's Vault is one of my all time underrated favorite cards. It lets you set up your deck for a few good card-draws at best, or acts as a Slightly worst Vamp Tutor. I love the card so much, and since I've been playing epser and grixis decks as of late, I have been going on a mini spending spree getting at least 3 or 4 overall. GREAT card.

    I love that you guys mentioned a Spellshaper (and that the whole type is underestimated). I literally put together a mono-black spellshaper/madness deck that slaughters huge money decks. When people see the ability and the creature power they always overlook it....until you use that ability and drop a savage madness spell at the same time.

    I really like the card Plasm Capture. It's a Mana Drain on steroids l. Sure it's two blue and two green to fire off, but in a simic deck, it's great. Using it to counter some fat giant spell and blow out my opponent, then to get that much mana on my main phase is pretty great.

    I love that you guys brought up Hall of Gemstone! That's been in my mono-green deck since day one and it's so good at slowing or even locking down opponents, and most can't even play their commander. Also, I came up with an infinite combo with Temur Sabertooth for my friend's Zacama deck, and it's just that: Zacama plus Temur Sabertooth plus lands that tap for a total of 12, and you've got infinite mana!

    I haven't really checked how popular these are, but...
    I have gotten really attached to Imprisoned in the Moon as a budget version of Song of the Dryads (and playable in nongreen blue decks). Can still hose a commander or an incredible tough to deal with creature (or land, if you don't use Strip Mine).
    I play UG a lot, and I don't know that Alchemist's Refuge sees much play. It's no Vedalken Orerry, but you can get a version of its effect on a land that's not 15 bucks (or however much Orerry costs).

    Some stuff I find extremely underrated:
    Archfiend of depravity
    Assemble the legion
    Sek'kuar (as commander)
    Soul Warden (best etb life gain ever)
    it seems I like beating
    EDIT:
    More cards I forgot:
    Reaper from the Abbys (Repeatable removal ealmost each turn, on a huge flying beater).
    Soldier of the pantheon (this dude is so good and overlooked, both blocking and gaining you life).
    Weathered wayfarer
    Quest for ula's temple (so much potential for just 1 single mana)
    Kruphix, God of Horizons (mah boy has the mana to cast those juicy BIG eldrazi)
    Angelic accord (it is soooo easy to abuse this thing each turn)
    Celestial force (Nobody wants to waste removal on this. Meanwhile, you get a bazillion life)
    Minds dilation (chaos at its finest, this thing is incredibly ridiculous)
    Tuktuk scraper, Hagra diabolist, Halimar excavator (these guys look horrible on their own, but on a tribal ally deck, they can ABSOLUTELY kill an opponent or mill somone out. Completely overlooked)
    Endbringer
    And my pick for the most underrated card: Mirage mirror.

    My Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain deck use vehicle as it main theme, so I use deadeye quartermaster. The card is great mainly because it search for equipment or a vehicle. Also there is a card I only use in my Hallar, The Firefletcher deck. The card called Saproling Infestation. In a one cororless, one green enchanment, that states when a player a kicker cost; they make a one one green saproling token. The kicker has a lot cards you don't see much in EHD in general. Have a great week DJ and Josh.

    Polluted Bonds in Golgari decks, is a favorite of mine. The Ramp from Green helps it drop earlier; then you use it with cards like Veteran Explorer, or Collective Voyage. It's also fun to see how people react that situation. Do they get lands, take damage and help you gain life, or do they put themselves behind you and anyone who opts to get the lands.

    My favorite card to play and has ALWAYS been incredibly great whenever I get it onto the field is Vodalian Illusionist. The card is 2 and a blue for a 2/2 merfolk wizard with the activated abilitiy of 2 and a blue and tap it to phase out target creature.
    Thanks to Teferi's Protection I think a lot more people understand phasing which has made this creature a lot easier to use, but I've been able to use this for so many flexible effects. You can use it before your upkeep to phase out a Sheoldred so you don't have to sacrifice your creatures, you can use it in response to someone targeting one of your creatures to phase that creature out, or you can even phase out one of your creatures in response to someone targeting your equipment or auras, and you can use it's ability on itself if it's the target of removal, or even to save an important creature in response to a board wipe.
    I first started using it when I built my Kumena deck with the intent to protect my commander, but since seeing how amazing it was there, it's become a staple in any of my decks running blue.

    Another cool thing about hall of gemstone is that since you are most likely playing it in mono green, you don't have a lot of good instant speed interaction, other than pump spells, and you are very susceptible counter spells and removal, hall of gemstone can protect you from that stuff during your turn, because if you choose green, that affects all lands, so then your opponents can't play mana drain, swords to plowshares, cyclonic rift, etc. on your turn, and it really protects you a lot.

      Sans enchantment removal, Beastmaster Ascension takes over games. I'm not sure I've ever lost a game where I turned it on and kept it in play.
      Favorite combo: BMA + Cultivator of Blades + Rapacious One. Cultivator adds its P/T to other creatures when it attacks, Rapacious One is 5/4 trample and makes Eldrazi Spawn for each damage it deals to the player. BMA pumps Cultivator's pump to +8/+8 AND pumps Rapacious One +5/+5, so R1 is hitting as an 18/17 and all the trample damage that gets through makes 5/6 tokens that will be buffed to 13/14 on the next swing if cultivator survived.

    I don't like this weird "social contract" stuff. Land destruction is a logical response to a powerful strategy. I think it's very lame that people build lands decks and think their strategy deserves to be protected by arbitrary rules.

    • @Itryhardder
      @Itryhardder Před 6 lety

      I agree my playgroup plays land destruction cards, the only rule we have is to have a way to win on board first, also with all the blue its likely to not resolve. My buddy has an Olivia Voldaren deck that he packed every targeted land destruction spell into, he often cripples the blue players and then destroys all the lands with Olivia out and just wins on the spot. One thing I think is way douchier is targeted hand removal such as Mind Shatter or Mind Twist, hands are sacred lands are not!

    • @TheCommanderDojo
      @TheCommanderDojo Před 6 lety +8

      I agree, nothing is sacred in Commander. I'm not a fan of this "social contract"/ "spirit of the format" stuff. People can't ever learn to combat LD if they never face it. It helps make people better Magic players

    • @Eramiserasmus
      @Eramiserasmus Před 6 lety +7

      I'm the one who introduced LD into our Commander and Modern playgroups. Because of that, our Modern Tron player regularly beats Ponza, our overall mana curves in decks have dropped and people are less inclined to play mass removal in case its followed up with Armageddon and a haste creature. We've learned how to play through hard locks and create bizarre wins through sheer tenacity. That's why people need to be ready for it.

    also, to answer the "To The Listener" segment...
    My go-to is probably Planar Collapse in that it's a 2 mana board wipe. it's a delayed board wipe, but the lack of flexibility tends not to get you punched in the face as much like Nev's disk tends to cause. it DOES however get people to do stuff.
